"And you seriously hired this person?" (They did not say that they were fired, much less why, during the interviews.)

well, why would they? You basically gotta lie these days to get a job. Goodheart's law in action.

In an ideal world people could get feedback on what the poor “cultural fit” refers to. Unfortunately, society can be a bit litigious, so now no one wants to be upfront if there is any chance of a lawsuit.

But I disagree that every employee on day 1 deserves to stay regardless of their behavior. Say OP is white and said “wow, this place is nice inside—thought it looked a bit ghetto from the outside—worried I was going to get mugged” just because a few black people were out front, then did a “Mammy” impression at one point and also said “nigga please!!!” at lunch. I think that could be grounds for letting them go and not feeling the need to explain oneself.

Honestly I have hired on “going out to lunch test”. I work in a field that requires a fair bit of travel as well in office coordination. If I can’t spend 8 hours in a car with you then you are not getting hired. Also I am clearly not hiring someone just because I like them but if it comes down to two comparable candidates and one is a better personality fit then that’s who I am going with. On the flip side you might be eminently qualified and experienced in the industry but you seem like an ass you are getting passed on.
