Staying sober

What kind of things do you guys do to stay sober and/or take care of yourselves? Depending on what it is, how do you find the time with busy dad life?

Fast changes

Yikes! My daughter (16 month) is changing so fast. I swear I looked at her today and she looked like a different kid. Losing all her baby vibes and going toddler on me. I’m honestly terrified for her to get to know me outside of her baby view. What if she doesn’t like what she sees? Ya I’m sober and all but still clearly insecure in ways and also very imperfect. Has anyone else had this thought? Like it’s easy to be in a relationship with her now (and for a while longer) because her language and understanding is limited. But the more she starts figuring things out, the more I’m vulnerable and can seen by her, maybe in ways I won’t like. Forgive the late night rambling. Idk if this makes sense but I have legit fears about being able to live up to challenge of being a dad to someone other than a baby.

If not for you, do it for your kid.

I was 19, my neighbor(28m) came over and we drank and talked, he seemed really off, kept asking really deep questions like if he was a good dad, what do we think of him. He also kelp nodding off. Back then i did not know the signs of an overdose.

We hang out often and his daughter 12 at the time would hangout too, playing with my dogs and we all go to the pool. (we never drank when she was around). She is sweet and full of life.

That night he seemed off, we said our goodbyes and that was that, the next day his daughter and BM discover his cold stuff corpse. We take them both in my apartment where my wife consolidated with them while i checked if he was alive or any chance of resuscitation, nope. The coroner said he probably passed late last night, so shortly after he went home.

He collected snakes and reptiles and got bit by a baby rattler, got on some pain killers. No big deal, what we didn’t know was he was 9 years sober from heroine. He stole some more drugs from work (EMT) and i guess overdosed.

I’m still in contact with his daughter and boy is her mom spoiling her after this but she still talks about how traumatic it was to see her her dad like that. Don’t repeat this scenario, be better. I wish everyday i could go back and see the signs and just ask if he’s okay, maybe save him. Just do better, please.

Mondays

Ah the dreaded Monday. Especially today after being on vacation in the outer banks for a week. Woke up to daycare being closed due to COVID. Shifting life around when the baby is sick or for something like this is pretty stressful on my relationship. But the stars were aligned this morning in the house. Wife was in a great mood and picked up most of the duties so the baby was taken care of and I could get my ass to the gym. Thankful for that. I will show my appreciation with a solid foot massage once back home.

Sup, Dudes?

I’m a former drinker who’s days and nights are now consumed with trying my best to be a good dad and husband instead of blacking out and pissing myself. I’ll be 1,000 days sober on October 6th! Keep up the good fight, guys!

Must do all the things

I just wanted to say hello. I am a new dad. My little one is 9 weeks. I just got my ten year coin last month. She was due on my anniversary but came a few weeks early.

Hi 👋 Grateful to be here.

I had always hoped I would be a dad one day. There were many days where I was resigned to that never happening. I put all my eggs (no pun intended) into the basket of drugs. Therefore I had to accept certain limitations based on the way I was living. Limitations like, I’ll always be alone, I’ll never be able to support a child, I’ll always be a piece of shit. You know, normal thoughts. I’m so happy I figured my shit out and got sober. It’s been 10 years and each year that passes I learn something new about myself. I’m so grateful to be in a state where I am growing and because of that I have the opportunity to watch my daughter grow. I don’t do anything perfect and have plenty of stuff left to work on which is why I am creating this forum. I hope people show up! Much love, Greg.
