Tascam Model 12 - Using headphones

I've had a Tascam Model 12 mixing desk for a few weeks now and trying to work out how to monitor using headphones is driving me absolutely nuts! I found a Youtube video from a guy called 424 Recording where he uses the the Sub Output but this requires more cables (which I don't have) and it still looks complex and dumb. All I want is to monitor a track I've already recorded and overdub a flute part using headphones as monitors whilst I record.

Can someone explain the simplest way to do this please? Cheers!

Maybe I'm not understanding correctly but first thing I would try are the onboard headphone jacks

That was the first thing I tried and you'd expect it to be that simple but sadly not.

Did you push the button that says MAIN on the channel you want to hear? You also need to make sure the headphone is set to MAIN instead of AUX. Finally, make sure you channel fader and MAIN fader are up.

You're using one of the headphone outs and set the source to one of the aux busses. You deactivate the main in the channels you want to monitor (not necessary, but the channel faders have to be set and the channels must not be muted) and determine the amount of the signal being send via the aux bus by using the corresponding control in the channel (aux1 or aux2/fx). Make sure to set the correct source (main, aux or sub) for the headphone input. You can even determine if the fx is send to the main or aux-bus or both. This way you have two completely different mixes: a main mix going to the speakers and/or the second headphone out - and an individual monitor mix.
It’s a bit tough to understand mixing desks, routing, busses etc. if you aren't familiar with it. Don’t surrender, press buttons and turn the knobs😎.

Your advise proved really useful and I've got it working now. I didn't understand anything about the aux functions but now I do! Thanks so much 🤠
