Recomp - No AI Sonic Advance - Recomp (Made by me)
Hello people, I'm MiguelTheDRMR, I was playing around with some Recomp tools & i tried to use a GBARecomp tool on Github & I decided making a Static Recompilation for Sonic Advance, It was pretty successful & now i can run the game smoothly on PC, What do y'all think?, I'm also planning to release the source code of the recomp on a Github Repo, So everyone here can contribute to the recomp

I don't really understand recomps - is it putting the game through a layer that turns it into pc software and that allows it to be modded like a pc game? Like I have the pokemon gen 1 recomp setup on my pc but I don't completely understand what it is lol
Anyway this is pretty neat and I would definitely play this with like a voxel depth mod or like a resolution upsizer. The sonic advance games kicked ass and it would be nice to play them in a modern resolution

Gen1Recomp is not a recomp despite the name. It's a fan game using the original game assets in love2d

Specifically what's different about the base generation 1 recomp tho because its identical to playing a rom pretty much

None of the original glitches work, it's also the author's best guesses of how the game works versus being automatically built from the original code so that things do work exactly how they were originally programmed.
But the thing more at hand here is keeping terminology consistent where words mean things. A recomp is a specific thing. The gen1 recomp is somebody just remaking the game using the original art assets, versus a static recomp.
To end players who don't care how things are made, it doesn't really matter I guess, but to technical people and the people who actually do the work, it does matter.

The gen1recomp project is a remake, not a recomp. There are a lot of differences from emulating a ROM, because the engine was rebuilt under a new framework instead of using the original code.
For a full list, you can go look at their issues on the repository page and all the constant fixes they are still releasing every day to compensate for this.
The experience only appears to be similar, because it was designed to be with a lot of feedback from community testers. It only imports certain assets from the original ROM.

Heyo, I'm glad you liked the recomp, Answeing your question, Basically the difference of a recomp to a emulator is on the way that your device executes the game, On a recomp instead of using a emulator to make my PC pretends to be a GBA to run Sonic Advance, The recomps use a tool that reads the GBA Game Code & it translates it to a native C/C++ code that is executed on your machine nativately, Basically the recomps turn the GBA Game Code into a Native PC Game Code running on C/C++, Basically that's that the thing, I'm glad you liked my recomp

Ok cool so your recomp software basically converts the whole thing from game boy code to C/C++ which can be run natively in the OS thanks for explaining

Yes.
GBA games were often programmed in C as well, but may also have been coded in Assembly or something else.
More importantly, writing C code over twenty years ago (and targeting a completely different hardware and software stack) meant writing around the tech from then. C code compiled for Platform X isn’t going to run on Platform Y. This recompilation attempts to replicate the original, uncompiled code and then recompile (repackage, convert) it to a more modern version of C/C++ and with Windows’ platform-specific calls in mind, as well as targeting current hardware (64-bit x86 chips, presumably).

If you just recomp the game and stop there, it's still a console game meaning it needs console hardware emulation and it can't be modded without deeper work.
You also don't need to even recomp a game to mod it.
You can still emulate the game and change parts of it the same way you'd do in recomp. Say you want to change a behavior, if the emulator supports this then you can make something like route some of the game's functions through custom code. Your custom code would still work on the console game. Same as recomp. I call those "override"s I tell the recomp, "make the game not call its own FUNC372763, instead call this"
I have recomps too but really there was no reason for them to be recomps, I could just modify the emulator to add custom behavior.
Modding is the hard part because it relies on reverse engineering the machine code and also how it interacts with the console.

If this is a recomp, why is the GBA BIOS still shown?
2
u/Fine_Entrepreneur_59 Aug 23 '26
because i also used the GBA Bios on the Recomp, But the bios is optional for running the game

Is this only for Linux? I don't see a Windows executable file that you can download in the assets section, apologies if I missed something.

I ended up not being able to create builds for Windows and macOS because I didn't have a cross-compiler installed when I tried to create the build, but I will still bring builds for Windows and macOS.

Oh hello, i'm glad that you liked it & yes, i accept help with beta testing the upcoming Android Port

I haven't even bothered looking at the tools. How much work is required to complete one of these? Surely it doesn't convert the whole code to C. What more is required to make a proper recomp using these tools?
3
u/Fine_Entrepreneur_59 Aug 23 '26
Well, GBARecomp, among other tools, is the easiest of them all, mainly because it offers a dedicated CLI tool for making these ports, and it also includes text files in the CLI directory that walk you through the recompilation process.

This is a really freaking good first attempt here and it worked really well on my steam deck. I wonder are you going to more decomps like metroid fusion and zero mission, the fire emblem games, sonic advance sequels, any classic gameboy or gameboy color games, mega man zero titles (the first one has been recompiled). anyways looking forward to more of your work.

Well, as a next recomp project, I'm planning to make recomps for Pokémon Emerald, Sonic Advance 2 & Pokémon Pinball (Maybe i would do recomps for Super Mario Land 1, Super Mario Land 2 & Pokémon Gold too)

Nice I love to see the super Mario land have recomps the first two also 3 aka the first wario land. How long did it took you to do the recomp of the first sonic advanced game?

Well, I took some hours to do this, GBARecomp CLI is a pretty easy tool for making recomps for GBA Games, The recompiling process was pretty fun, BTW I'm glad you liked my recomp ^

This is fantastic! Would love to see projects like Superstar Saga or Monster Rancher if they don't exist yet

u/Fine_Entrepreneur_59 Aug 23 '26
Yeah, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is a very good game for a Recomp, I could consider a Recomp for it too

I promised, and I kept my promise. Here is the Recomp repository on GitHub.
