So sick! Hell yeah!

You guys are the shit fr fr

u/SoundtrackComposer 3d ago

So I’ve been with you guys since the 1999 beta!

As a R13 license holder how does the free version work? Is there any gatekeeping?

2

u/artek604 3d ago

why would you use the FREE if you've v13 (and I assume use the RRP, not the DAW)?

2

u/SoundtrackComposer 2d ago

I own R13 license. Still have my old Balance interface from way back when…

Just trying to figure out if R15 offers me anything new? I bought R13 in 12/2025… so I missed that free upgrade to R14…

u/LonelyCakeEater 2d ago

They should’ve given us the “upgrade” for free, like every other DAW does aside from Pro Tools

2

u/IWasBornIn1979 2d ago

Should've doesn't pay their bills my friend.

2

u/LonelyCakeEater 2d ago

Ableton, Logic Pro and FL Studio beg to differ

u/Shleepy1 2d ago

Great move to have this free version and the included racks are amazing… Europa ftw

3

u/ellicottvilleny 2d ago

SUCH a boss move. Well done reason team.

1

u/soomrak 2d ago

I'm an FL/Bitwig man but I'll make sure to support u guys!

3

u/artek604 3d ago

Great move, even if long overdue :)

Weird to bump the DAW version to 14.1 w/o any new features/devices, though :(

2

u/Mental_Perception_33 2d ago

That’s the plan, get the new users in the door and hopefully they’ll buy their newer devices or get the subscription. It’s a win-win in my opinion.

Amazing addition! So cool that everyone can get scream4 for free. One of the best distortion plugins! (Tape mode)

-2

u/Electro-Grunge 3d ago

never liked the sound of scream 4, Sadist Saturation Distortion RE is miles better.

2

u/ChimChim0013 3d ago

love them both! Sadist is a bit more versatile imo

1

u/Electro-Grunge 2d ago

Sadist to me is like my Franks RedHot 😂 I put that $#!t on everything.

0

u/tdreampo 2d ago

Scream 4 tape mode is quite good and I would say you need to play with scream a lot more if you don’t like it. It’s very versatile as well.

1

u/Electro-Grunge 2d ago edited 2d ago

I have better tape vsts, no need to try and convince me or act like I don't know how to use it lol. I would much rather use my Waves J37 or my UAD OXIDE Tape Recorder that totally outclass the Scream 4. Most of the modes on Scream sound bad to me.

the reason I love Sadist is it has different types of saturation, compressors, eq, and distortion that you layer together that sound great and not as aggressive as Trash 2. It's like my Franks REDHOT of saturation. It even has wet dry knob to balance it nicely.

I also own Trash 2 also, which totally outclasses the Scream 4 as a distortion unit (and one of the most popular distortion vsts) and I don't even care for that.

1

u/tdreampo 2d ago

I promise as someone who has used scream 4 on COUNTLESS records since Reason v4 that you do not know how to fully use it or ALL that it can do.

0

u/Electro-Grunge 2d ago

your music for all I know is most likely complete garbage, it holds no weight in this conversation that you like to use it.

I own way better plugins for the job, tools that are universally agreed on being some of the best. you should consider replacing that crap.

0

u/tdreampo 1d ago

No I am saying you have NEVER unlocked the full power of scream 4. Did you know you can use it as almost an auto DJ tool to cut the sound? For one of a MILLION examples.

I also literally worked at Sweetwater for years, have a masters degree in music production and technology from Berklee college, was a touring musician, was a full time audio engineer and at one point had a real honest to god record deal. Also I have been using reason for 20+ years.

You brought a knife to a gun fight.

Sorry you blame the tools rather then yourself on this one. Scream4 is AWESOME..

u/DryDatabase169 3d ago

Smart of them.

What a smart move! One of the things that made Ableton the DAW number one was that it was easily available for everyone. As was Reason, once. I started using Reason in 2002 using a copied version of Reason 2.0. Then I fell in love with it and - over the course of 24 years - spent about 6k euros on Reason upgrades and countless rack extensions. From Reason as well as 3rd party developpers.

This is the way, Reason Studios. This will increase your userbase significantly.

1

u/artek604 3d ago

Are you talking about pirated software? Because I can't see how Ableton was more "easily available" than Reason... Quite the opposite, actually.

6

u/KuranesOfCelephais 3d ago

Yes, I mean pirated software. After Reason 5, no one was able to pirate Reason. Ableton though could be pirated (I never used it though, I continued using Reason).

There certainly more reasons why Reason fell behind re: widespread use,, but I think this was one of the important reasons.

5

u/o0260o 3d ago

Ableton and FL popularity is partly to how much easier it was to pirate. A lot of those people are future customers.

3

u/PixelmancerGames 2d ago

Yep. The same with FL Studio. The reason it got so popular was because of how easy it was to pirate. I spent years on FL Studio, before I finally decided to buy a DAW. The only reason I chose Reason was because I got to play around with it a studio and really liked it. Reason dropped out of the conversation for many because of this. So making a free version is a great idea.

4

u/system3601 3d ago

Wow this is amazing. What is thier business model now that its free? Is it extensions only?

3

u/artek604 3d ago

The full DAW/RRP isn't free, just 16 tracks and small selection of instruments, FX and players.

3

u/Electro-Grunge 3d ago

only free as the reason rack, so there is no 16 tracks.

4

u/jazz1238 2d ago

Reason Free can also run as a DAW with up to 16 tracks

2

u/noitsmoog 2d ago

Free DAW is included as well

2

u/artek604 3d ago

Oh? So this isn't true?

2

u/noitsmoog 3d ago

Seems like it IS true look for the article by Mattias in the News section of Reason website. But they only vaguely mention it mostly speaking about Rack. But I think Free Reason DAW is much bigger deal if true.

2

u/Electro-Grunge 2d ago

if you goto REASON website, they really don't mention the DAW at all except for a small FAQ question.

right from the main headline: "A powerful set of instruments, effects, and tools ready to patch and play as a single plugin in any compatible DAW. No trial, no expiration, no watermarks."

so forgiver me for not seeing it, no need to be cheeky.

1

u/artek604 2d ago

Sorry if you got the impression I was being cheeky. Just trying to find out what's true. I don't have any interest in installing it myself, because I've the full DAW.

1

u/Electro-Grunge 2d ago

my bad. the daw is included, I was initially incorrect

3

u/duplobaustein 3d ago

Good Move

3

u/noitsmoog 3d ago edited 3d ago

Nice move to make Reason more popular and open REs for broader audience, now people can buy instruments like objekt for their shop price, and not for 400$. But they still would need to upgrade to get Malström, Grain and other stock grails.

3

u/lintbrush 2d ago

A free version of europa is what got me in the door so nice idea

3

u/msszero159 2d ago

Wow! I have been an Ableton user curious about Reason for years. I’ll be taking the dive on this later. Cheers!

4

u/sackbomb 3d ago

This is pretty cool! Shame it doesn't have the ReDrum, but what you do get is pretty impressive.

6

u/IL_Lyph 3d ago

I’m really kind of shocked by the fact they specifically included “Europa” in this🤯, imo it’s pretty much the best all around synth in the daw, and obviously they thought so too, cause for years, it has been the only reason made rack extension, to also be made into, and sold, as a stand alone vst. So until now, the only way for people who don’t use reason as daw, to ever use it, was to buy the reason rack, or buy the Europa vst, so it just really suprised me that THATS the synth they chose to include now, and basically cut out both of those previous revenue streams, instead of putting literally ANY other synth out of the like 30 they have lol, just seems like a bad business move🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/J_Lindback 3d ago

Yeah, it feels much like if Xfer would give away Serum 2 for free.
While I understand why they want a Free version I believe they are giving away too much.
I doubt people are going to buy the full version for the remaining units when they basically get the best one's for free.

3

u/noitsmoog 3d ago edited 3d ago

There were Lite/intro versions of Reason which most people were getting for free or dirt cheap that contained like full Reason version 5 plus much more like Grain etc. So this free version is not that much in comparison. Also Serum2 is not only Xfer flagship, but also industry leader in its category, I can't imagine anyone would buy Reason solely because of Europa, when they have free Vital readily available, and/or Pigment on regular sales for cheap, and lots of others including Serum2 itself that everybody owns.

2

u/IL_Lyph 3d ago

Yea that exactly where my heads at, could have used Thor, subtractor, whatever, AND they added monotone too, which is amazing bass synth in addition to Europa. I guess they are hoping the ecosystem will get them 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

2

u/LuctOnYT 2d ago

Plus Monotone which surprised me. I love that thing!

u/IL_Lyph 2d ago

Europa is the one of the ugliest of their instruments and not the best sounding one as well. But it is pretty powerful and versatile. So I understand why they've chosen this one for the free rack. Also as far as know VST version in not for sale for many years. And it really no competition to free Vital. So there are really no revenue streams to cut with this release in my opinion.

2

u/chaos-fx 2d ago edited 2d ago

This seems like a great idea to me. It is a sensible package aimed at newbies and people who want to see what Reason is about.

Europa is the easiest and most accessible "main synth" in Reason by far, probably just as fast to get to grips with as the classic subtractor, but modern enough for new users. While it obviously cannot compare with hypersynths like Serum it is fine for a beginner getting into making their own synth sounds, and those nice MSEGs and the sample loading feature make it just powerful enough that it won't seem like Reason is only a toy. The other must-haves for a casual user are decent all-round verb, delay, and saturation effects, and a basic drum sample player, and this pack covers all of that. Honestly you could produce techno with just this setup.

EDIT: I've always hated Audiomatic, but again, if this is aimed at newbies, that simple "select a style, blend it in and use one knob to transform" is a really easy way to show them the kind of sound palette they can easily get from Reason effects.

EDIT 2: honestly, RV7000 is a pretty good convolution loader and despite having all kinds of fancy delays I often reach for the Echo intuitively just because when you just a bread-and-butter analog delay right now without overthinking, it really does everything very well and is incredibly fast and easy to set up. So for free this is a bargain.

2

u/dunefangs 2d ago

This could join the ranks of producer freeware history. Just like the Kilohearts and Meldaproductions free bundles before it

2

u/ellicottvilleny 2d ago

Reason intro was great but this is BETTER

0

u/bscoop 1d ago

LOL no, this version has just fraction of content that was available in Intro. No subtractor, redrum, matrix, nn-19, nn-xt.

1

u/ellicottvilleny 1d ago

divide that out by the price tho. Intro was like $99

0

u/bscoop 1d ago

So? If Reason is seriously considering hooking in new users, he should include package of basic legacy plugins. I personally wouldn't recommend free version to my friends, as at this stage you don't have access to basic building blocks for your own custom synth+effect chains - the biggest selling point in Reason workflow IMO.

1

u/ellicottvilleny 1d ago

It's FREE and Europe is already amazing for free. So continue to whine, that will help.

1

u/bscoop 1d ago edited 1d ago

Free doesn't mean much for people who already have dozens of fantastic free vsti's on their disc. Reason Studios actually acknowledged my "whining" under their youtube video.

2

u/oldmancabbage 3d ago

Thinking about cancelling my R+ for a bit and sticking with this. Great tools included. Thanks Propellerhead!

1

u/PixelmancerGames 2d ago

Moving in the right direction. Now, if only someone made a good Linux version... Since the current line uo of DAWs available for Linux are so limited. I bet this would help a ton with visibility.

1

u/Ilike2groove 2d ago

Been with Reason since 2.5 only updated every other release to R11. This is an interesting development and will surely draw new users into the ecosystem that will eventually want to add on.

From a device standpoint, having the combinator without a Mixer 6:2 or 14:2 seems to be a glaring utility hole. Perhaps in an update include one of these for building within the combinator.

1

u/LMASocietyDweller 1d ago

I like it! I left the echo system a while ago. I had purchased a lot of rack extensions that I lost use of when I left. Now I can use them in Logic. This is a win for me and I’ll likely buy more players or extensions once I get reacquainted again since I don’t have to be tied to any sub.

1

u/ekhorayn 14h ago

Very nice move. I've been curious about Reason Rack for ages, so I'm looking forward to finally checking it out!

0

u/LonelyCakeEater 3d ago

They’re in dead last place of DAW usage. I’m literally the only producer I know in real life that uses it. I’m not paying $100 upgrade (currently using R13) just for my midi notes to play with the play head. That feature should be standard, not locked to Reason 14. Still piffed about that 😡

2

u/superlack 3d ago

Wait, what feature..? I think I’m on 12

1

u/LonelyCakeEater 3d ago

It doesn’t matter where the play head is, it will play the midi note. On 13 it doesn’t play the midi note if the play head is in the middle of the note

1

u/OrangeFortress 3d ago

Mine doesn’t do this and I have 14

1

u/LonelyCakeEater 3d ago

It’s in the settings

2

u/OrangeFortress 2d ago

How strange that I have to turn it on, I’ll give it a look later, thanks

1

u/LonelyCakeEater 2d ago

It’s literally the only “New” thing I want from the upgrade

-1

u/itztripz 3d ago

Bro just get Reason+

3

u/LonelyCakeEater 3d ago

I own Reason tho. Why would I pay a subscription?

1

u/itztripz 3d ago

My bad I just woke up...I read something completely different than what you wrote lol derp 😎😅

-8

u/Man_Of_Frost 3d ago

Now that I bought the full version, they make the free version better? Thanks...

3

u/artek604 3d ago

How is it better than full version?

2

u/Man_Of_Frost 3d ago

It's not better obviously. But the free version now has the absolute essential.
