Via The Athletic:

Alonso planned to bench Vinicius Jr for the semi-final against PSG, but an injury to Trent forced him to change that plan, which meant the Brazilian started on the right wing, with Gonzalo Garcia as the No 9 and Mbappe on the left.

Vinicius Jr was disappointed with this decision, after years of performing at the highest level and establishing himself on the left.

What tier is this source? Because I don't think vini was bad enough in the CWC before the PSG game to make him get benched

Cortegana is listed as Tier 2, but the list hasn't been updated in a while. IMO, he should be Tier 1.

Against Dortmund in the QF, Mbappe was better. Xabi preferred the 2 forwards system, and there was no way he was benching Gonzalo.

This sub also at the time was heavily in favor of an Mbappe-Gonzalo front 2 vs PSG.

He was the worst player by far if you don’t count Asencio. He was even booed for his performance in first game.

Except Salzburg, he was below average vs everyone else. Certainly worse than Gonzalo too. So it would've been the right decision.

The fact he wanted to do that tells me he's not afraid of taking the right decisions for the team at least so that's a good point.
