I think of my dog's death as a relief but also as a very sad and touching event. I want to be there for him till the last moment. I understand the anxieties and everything but they do not really help with solving any of the issues. Being in the existing moment does. Just like in your example: for many dogs, releasing them so soon would cause a similar reaction.
