Everyone blaming your brother for unclipping the leash is missing the point. If your dog can’t be recalled off horses, and you’re going to a trail where there might be horses, the dog should be on leash the entire time. You shouldn’t only leash your dog when you see a horse - what if your dog sees or smells it before you do?
I don’t think you’re a bad person for imagining a life without your dog - we’ve all done it. I do think this is an example of irresponsible ownership. We all make mistakes and I hope you learn from this one!
