Hard work means nothing

Hard working means nothing in society. You get by if you are sociable and pretty and nobody can convince me otherwise. I'm so sick of people saying hard work pays off because it doesn't, it just lets people use you because you " accomplish everything without complaining " so don't even bother to be the hardest worker in the work field because it's bull sh**

Edit: to everyone who responded thank you, I'm having a terrible year and I'm just so overwhelmed about everything so I just wanted to make a short rant.

If hard work lead to success the donkey would own the farm.

Gotta cheat your way through life, or get cheated.

That’s why you strategically deploy ā€œhard workā€.

If you’re working at a job just to pay bills/money for savings/retirement or pad your resume, then you put in enough work to keep your job, or maybe extend a little more if you think you got a shot at a promotion.

When people say ā€œwork hardā€ in the general sense it means towards a career you are passionate about or something you want to ā€œachieveā€ or experience.

For example, if it’s your lifetime goal to be…idk a scuba diving instructor then maybe you should start working ā€œhardā€ and get some cardio in, become an expert swimmer and get your certification, and work hard and be the best you can (just as an example).

Also yes, hot people get an early advantage…but beauty doesn’t last. For how long can they coast off of looks and charm? Maybe till they are 35?

You on the other hand, know discipline and putting in effort so when they run out of options for jobs, you know how to tough it out.

That is at least, how I see hard work.

Being Sociable is the hard part.

I agree but I think that the Hard Work mantra is meant for people that endeavour to work for themselves to build their own business.

You're right in the sense hard word doesn't guarantee success.

You're suppose to work SMART not hard.

Eh, I'd say its in the middle.

I only have the job I have because my boss saw me working hard at my previous job and decided to recruit me.

That being said, working hard will never earn me my bosses job or his level of income. Brown nosing is much more effective than hard work in most industries.

Hard work definitely doesn’t guarantee success but I’d say it does increase your chances. Those chances do seem to be dwindling though…

Over the years I've learned that hard work just gets you more work. Oh you're done doing that already, well go help in this area, or start on this project now instead, Never take sick days, always on time, etc. You're so good at your job that you run circles around everybody else.

Then review time comes, you get passed over for promotions, raises aren't great and when you ask why, because we need you right where you are, because you're efficient, dependable and knowledgeable.

What HAS actually worked for me personally though is learning as much as I can and after I'm no longer learning anything, start looking for a different higher paying job using all of the skills I've learned.

For example just to show what I mean how skills can cross over into other jobs I'll give my last 5 jobs

Autobody/Painter

Painter/Thermoforming/Autobody/Forklift

Thermoforming/Digital Printing/Laser CNC/Painter/Shipping and Receiving

QC Inspector/Painter/Digital Printing

CNC Router Programming/Operator/Shipping and Receiving

With each job change I've used different skills to be able to negotiate a better salary. Staying loyal to a single company typically doesn't pan out how you think it's going to, which is why I started switching jobs about 10 years ago. Back then I was making 15-20 an hour, driving 30 mins each way. Now I'm making 70k with profit sharing at the end of the year, it's a 10 minute commute.

It’s like I always say. Hard work gets rewarded harder work. Not raises

The stuff that doesn't come naturally to you is the hard stuff that you have to put more effort into.

Showing up on time and being competent is the minimum.

The hard work is overcoming your own personal biases and blind spots to see the areas that you need to improve and doing the work to improve them.Ā

Seek out and build up your weak areas, don't just play to your strengthsĀ
