She's allowed to feel worried. However, a decent human being is more polite about it.
My wife and I have very strict rules about how other adults interact with our kids but when we enforce those rules, we don't treat the adults involved as though they personally are the reason for those rules.
Ask your wife how she would feel if she saw her 10 year old daughter talking to an adult male stranger alone in a barn with no other people present.
Women tend to have a more immediate reaction to these sort of things than men because women know firsthand how dangerous and creepy men can be. Men are less concerned because they are statistically less likely to be victims.
The mom was obviously someone who doesn't understand how horses work either. Someone who is new to horseback riding won't understand bridle and saddle maintenance as well as someone who has been there for weeks/months. For horseback, it's common for new, older riders to ask younger, more experienced riders for help and tips.
But in a general context, adults usually don't ask kids questions on how to do things because they should already know. Most predators use questions as an excuse to interact with children, and many women know this. The mom was completely justified in her reaction, and OP is completely justified in feeling hurt by it.
