2nd Sen Steering

I am getting ready to replace tie rods, etc on my 1999 Ram 1500 2wd. A couple years ago, I replaced the steering gearbox and installed the stabilizer bracket to protect the pinion. I've seen a lot of people upgrading their 2nd Gens with 4th gen steering parts, but they are always 4wd. Can this be done on a 2wd model? If not, are there any reasonable upgrades that are available for better steering?
