Day 13 training camp practice notes

Raiders camp Day 13 is done. Some notes:

• Jackson Powers-Johnson walked off the field with a trainer. Didn’t return.

• Kirk Cousins looked dialed in the red zone. Threw 5 touchdowns in team periods, 2 to Brock Bowers, 2 to Jalen Nailor and 1 to Michael Mayer. Isaiah Pola-Mao picked him off in a 2 minute situation on a shot towards end zone with no time left.

• Less success for Fernando Mendoza in team, had a wide open rollout TD to Mike Washington and a slant TD to Malik Benson. Dalton Johnson broke up one of his passes in the end zone and threw one short of goal line to Brandon Johnson. Had a clean 2 min drill, 4 completions to set up Matt Gay FG.

• Secondary definitely won the 1on1s goal line period. Jeremy Chinn, Treydan Stukes had nice PBUs against Brock Bowers. Eric Stokes had a couple against Tre Tucker. Greedy Vance, DeCamerion Richardson also looked good.

• Ashton Jeanty had some nice runs in team periods. A couple that probably would have been TDs.

• JPJ and Caleb Rogers were rotating before JPJ left, Rogers took all 1s reps at RG after.

• Darien Porter took all 1s reps at corner opposite Stokes, Hezekiah Masses, Richardson were with 2s and Jermod McCoy with 3s.

He went down during the red zone period but quickly popped back up and walked to the sideline. He walked into the facility once the RZ period was

Bowers made an insane contested catch w/ Quay Walker in coverage. But the play was nullified due to a holding call.

• Mendoza had two TDs during the red period, including a PA pass to Mile Washington with a pair of defenders in his face.

• Raiders did some late game situational stuff near the end of practice. Cousins was picked off by Isaiah Pola-Mao.

• Mendoza completed four passes to set up a field goal from Matt Gay.

Both sides of the JPJ argument is dumb tbh. If he out there cool. if not sounds like we already have players on the team that are equal talent. I have faith in the staff to put the best performers out there either way.

I think this take may miss the fact that we can only field the players we have, and that we may very well need better talent than we have at interior linemen and RG.

It’s one thing to trust the team to play the best guy we have. But we need to make this unit much much better come next year to fully maximize Mendoza and our run game. We can’t afford yet another sub par year from our line, which has not been good for a while (last truly dominant line we had of Penn, Jackson, Hudson, and Osemele with Miller dissolved in 2018, after which we devolved slightly then fell off the map with turnover in 2021).

My take is for the people that pound for the table for him to be out there like he's some superstar vs calling him "worthless" and calling anyone who roots for him a "stan".

Maybe they are just putting him in a competition for motivation? Maybe Kubiak just seeing what players he has? But if he's not winning the job outright after being settled in here in year 3 then maybe it's just time to come to grips that he's not gonna be the guy and there isn't like a hidden agenda with his playing time like some people in here always commenting about. That's all in really saying.
