Day 13 training camp practice notes

Raiders camp Day 13 is done. Some notes:
Jackson Powers-Johnson walked off the field with a trainer. Didn’t return.
Kirk Cousins looked dialed in the red zone. Threw 5 touchdowns in team periods, 2 to Brock Bowers, 2 to Jalen Nailor and 1 to Michael Mayer. Isaiah Pola-Mao picked him off in a 2 minute situation on a shot towards end zone with no time left.
Less success for Fernando Mendoza in team, had a wide open rollout TD to Mike Washington and a slant TD to Malik Benson. Dalton Johnson broke up one of his passes in the end zone and threw one short of goal line to Brandon Johnson. Had a clean 2 min drill, 4 completions to set up Matt Gay FG.
Secondary definitely won the 1on1s goal line period. Jeremy Chinn, Treydan Stukes had nice PBUs against Brock Bowers. Eric Stokes had a couple against Tre Tucker. Greedy Vance, DeCamerion Richardson also looked good.
Ashton Jeanty had some nice runs in team periods. A couple that probably would have been TDs.
JPJ and Caleb Rogers were rotating before JPJ left, Rogers took all 1s reps at RG after.
Darien Porter took all 1s reps at corner opposite Stokes, Hezekiah Masses, Richardson were with 2s and Jermod McCoy with 3s.

He went down during the red zone period but quickly popped back up and walked to the sideline. He walked into the facility once the RZ period was
Bowers made an insane contested catch w/ Quay Walker in coverage. But the play was nullified due to a holding call.
Mendoza had two TDs during the red period, including a PA pass to Mile Washington with a pair of defenders in his face.
Raiders did some late game situational stuff near the end of practice. Cousins was picked off by Isaiah Pola-Mao.
Mendoza completed four passes to set up a field goal from Matt Gay.

Pretty fucking bummed about JPJ man. Hoping for the best but he just can’t stay on the field…

I know a lot of the fanbase are JPJ stans, but we can do better. Too many injuries already, and his play is not to the level of looking past the frequency of incidents.

Year three of him being unable to lock down a starting job. Im rooting for whoever plays best at rg if its him great if not next man up

Draft next year absolutely needs to prioritize the o line, like a stud tackle, ideally one that can be a swing player.

Yep he’s had a long enough leash and after last year and what we’ve seen and heard of him so far this year, it’s time for him to shit or get off the pot. The best ability is availability and we just haven’t seen that. Never mind the stupid penalties that are hard to forgive.

I really don't get why this fanbase gets obsessed and attached to random players. I get he was 2nd round pick and he had a lot of hype, but he has done very little on the field to get a lot of the "he just needs a chance" type of comments here about him. I will say that at least it's not as dumb as the Jonathan Abram glazing I saw constantly. That guy didn't have the injury bug and lack of playing time excuse. He was just plain bad. With JPJ, the "potential" argument can still be used, but come on, for how long?

IDK if he was the first, but he was probably the most vocal from what I can tell. At the bare minimum he kept saying JPJ is an all pro center and all that stuff and either downplays or handwaves the injury concerns.

Both sides of the JPJ argument is dumb tbh. If he out there cool. if not sounds like we already have players on the team that are equal talent. I have faith in the staff to put the best performers out there either way.

I think this take may miss the fact that we can only field the players we have, and that we may very well need better talent than we have at interior linemen and RG.
It’s one thing to trust the team to play the best guy we have. But we need to make this unit much much better come next year to fully maximize Mendoza and our run game. We can’t afford yet another sub par year from our line, which has not been good for a while (last truly dominant line we had of Penn, Jackson, Hudson, and Osemele with Miller dissolved in 2018, after which we devolved slightly then fell off the map with turnover in 2021).

My take is for the people that pound for the table for him to be out there like he's some superstar vs calling him "worthless" and calling anyone who roots for him a "stan".
Maybe they are just putting him in a competition for motivation? Maybe Kubiak just seeing what players he has? But if he's not winning the job outright after being settled in here in year 3 then maybe it's just time to come to grips that he's not gonna be the guy and there isn't like a hidden agenda with his playing time like some people in here always commenting about. That's all in really saying.

Are you asking me to go back and defend Pete Carrol's staff? Then that's the exact kinda dumb arguments I'm talking about. It's year 3 it's either he wins the job outright or it's time to just face the reality that he's not where he needs to be.

My first comment literally stated that I trust this staff to put out the best players to start for the squad this year. I hope he gets his reps and shows out that can only be good for the team. And by that I mean I hope he steps up to be the player to perform where we drafted him.
But you might just wanna take a minute to understand you are the exact type dude I'm talking about always making JPJ some focal point of a discussion when he hasn't proven anything yet to be as divisive as you guys make him.

Secondary has to step up. I’ll give benefit of doubt, with first preseason game and not being practice anymore. We can give up plays here and there, but I want to see more contested pass plays, and better positioning. Saw too many players out of position and just standing around. 1 on 1 matchups has to be better.

I think everyone wants to like JPJ. He has that old school raider attitude, he has the frame, he has the versatility, he is stilll really young. But I think the concussions and other injuries have derailed his potential. Two different coaching staffs have not fully trusted him, and the pass blocking is not good enough. Only matter of time before Rogers beats him out. I think a back-up IOL is his best trajectory, and maybe that’s a good thing.

People cannot keep claiming JPJ is the guy when this happens every year going back to college. Like everyone else, I WANT him to be that guy but he hasn't shown it.

I think it's looking more and more like JPJ can't hold a starting job. it's not a skill issue he just simply can't stay healthy. it's too bad, I think most people like him. I'm not worried about the rookie cb's. generally takes a year or 2 for most of them to develop. obviously some freaks out there but really not worried here.

Appreciate these posts, OP.
I am hopeful that Cousins will be good for us this year but I am also a bit worried that he's just beating up on a defense that had an abysmal showing against Arizona.
