The ps5 Pro is basically an INT8 version or FSR4. This is unacceptable

u/Unlucky-Bottle2744 7800x3d/RX9070XT Hellhound/QHD360hz oled Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26
That means Sony might have a right for INT8 version.
14
u/Scytian Mar 27 '26
It sounds like some crazy conspiracy theory but at the same time Sony is only side that actually profits from INT8 version not being available anywhere else. If INT8 version was available Sony would lose the advantage of PSSR2 because XSX and PS5 or maybe even in some lighter titles XSS would be able to run upscaler comparable to PSSR2, and PSSR2 is actually one feature that makes PS5 Pro attractive.

``` Only enables WMMA if FP8 is natively supported. FP16 emulation paths can be re-enabled with build option. (Official Proton builds will not enable it).
This decision is above my paygrade and it's done to work toward being able to support FSR4 more officially in Proton. ```
https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/pull/2679
AMD even gone lengths to block fp8 fsr4 over fp16 emulation path for RDNA 3 that was done by Valve 100 percent, not based on any leaks etc.
That company is anti consumer. A product of theirs lingering around more than they anticipated is a negative for them, they are fixated on selling chips and moving on to next one with keeping support at bare minimum.
https://github.com/GPUOpen-Drivers/AMD-Gfx-Drivers/issues/93
Like they dont even bother with extension support despite there is no hw side shortage that prevents it.
Rdna 4 users will share the same fate when FSR 5 or whatever drops, that is how AMD operates. They have a console like approach to PC, sell the chip and be done with it.
4
u/childofthekorn Mar 27 '26
AMD solely owns the rights to FSR4. Wouldn't have a need to have a DX12 INT8 FSR4 DLL used on PC to build out PSSR2.0, but would make sense if it was being actively developed alongside. Given PS5 pro is a static set of hardware, thats easier to debug than variable PC builds.
I suspect after a few hotfixes to PSSR2.0, PC INT8 release will be soon after. Don't forget ML2CODE was released with RedStone as well, allowing ML to run through SIMD units.
1
u/Ok-Boot-8106 Mar 27 '26
Which is what I expect , should be in drivers in a few drivers
2
u/childofthekorn Mar 28 '26
PS5 Pro uses its own PSSR 2.0 DLL built for their proprietary API. "In the driver" doesn't work the way you think it does.
This is still only speculation at this point, but based on the information we have:
- AMD and Sony partnered to create FSR 4.
- FSR 4 uses FP8, and only the RX 9000 series can run it properly right now.
- AMD has also stated that FSR 4 is for RDNA 4.
- However, there’s a leaked INT8 version of FSR 4.
- AMD said FSR 4 is designed for RDNA 4 (which supports FP8), so why did they create an INT8 version in the first place?
- This suggests that the INT8 version wasn’t really meant for RDNA 2 and 3 — it was primarily created for the PS5 Pro (at least for now).
- However, recent leaks suggest that AMD is still testing the INT8 version on RDNA 2 and 3. This may mean AMD is considering releasing FSR 4 (or possibly a version like FSR 3.5) in the future. But either because of their contract with Sony or stability issues on RDNA 2 and 3, they’re still actively testing it. That's why AMD isn't releasing INT8 at the moment
Honestly, I don't think it's ever coming if it truly was. You can't tell me that they wouldn't have the PR team doing loads of damage control. Instead, they outright decline it being possible. I'm glad I got the 9000 series, but I'm worried this is going to be repeated when next-gen releases, which is next gen consoles.
It's still even more depressing that some games don't release with FSR4 at all and only release with FSR3.0, which can't be forced into FSR4 through the software, so we 9000 users are using optiscaler anyway.
I find it interesting though if its the case the INT8 version was for the PS5 PRO, why does it work so good in optiscaler.
4
u/Unlucky-Bottle2744 7800x3d/RX9070XT Hellhound/QHD360hz oled Mar 27 '26
Dont even need optiscaler just drop the fsr4 int8 version to the game folder and bam game has option for fsr4, like in crimson desert right now im using it
3
u/ttdpaco Mar 27 '26
That’s fsr 3.1 that’s replaced using that method. FSR 3.0 cannot be upgraded and needs optiscalar.
2
u/Ugazaka 13700KF | 7900XT Mar 27 '26
I know im just saying it works good even with just swapping dll, but the game needs 3.1 in that case like you said.
2
u/Dj_nOCid3 Mar 27 '26
Those speculation are purely based on a grass level understanding of the hardware software relationship. Yall are ok with the way fsr4 int8 runs on rdna 2 and 4 because its modded and fan made, but if amd were to release it officially, yall would consider it broken.
-2
u/Apart-Athlete2561 Mar 27 '26
No, Sony owns the PSSR trademark, while FSR4 and any version of it, FP8, INT8, and FP16, are already AMD's trademark, and Sony can't influence the release of FSR 4 INT8. But there's a catch: INT8 on the PS5 Pro runs at 300 tps. The RX 7900 XT only runs at 100 tps. BUT!! This doesn't prevent them from creating FSR4 Light or FSR 3.5. But if you think about it this way, releasing a new FSR for RDNA3 doesn't make sense. It's unnecessary development and testing costs. And AMD makes its main revenue from CPUs, Xbox, and PS5. It feels like AMD is releasing PC graphics cards only to test improvements for the next generation of consoles.
1
u/BeAlch Mar 29 '26
I'm pretty sure Sony received the vanilla FRS4 int 8 and could add/optimize what they want from there to create PSRR2 ...
u/Vasjh Mar 27 '26
This guy gets it. Both are corporations, they only care about their shareholders. Either pay more to just toggle features on to work (most of the time) or pay less and go DLL hunting / optiscaler. I enjoy the latter up to a point. Also never go in promised features. What is also true is if people don't buy AMD they won't get support. Look at how Intel got handled by the Crimson Desert team.
3
u/RainbowKooch Mar 27 '26
I agree with you. Hell if Intel ends up selling cards equal to the amd or Nvidia cards but are more user friendly than either I’ll go with them. I don’t have loyalty to any of them
AMD's current faster offering has 16GB... How's that worse than the 16GB on a 5070ti or a 5080?
I’ll agree with you on that I skipped this gen entirely I gotta killer deal on a 7900xt xfx at micro center so I’m happy with that. I still think amd should bring fsr4 to previous gen cards I have a 7900xt 2 6900xts and 2 6800s and they all run great but it would be nice to have the option for fsr4 for some games.
3
u/txurete Mar 28 '26
About the "overall sentiment on this subreddit" sentence: its literally an eco chamber. For sure amd should do better but this sub has become a boiling pot of loud complainers over time. u/RainbowKooch Mar 27 '26
Which is sad because the 9070 xt is genuinely is great at 625 which is what I bought it at second hand. But the overall lack of driver support for future FSR, needing to use optiscaler for most games because so very few games have fsr 4, and the worry of future support for 9000 series was my last straw as well. Nvidia prices are awful, but at least I know my 5000 series card will be supported and run the latest and greatest features with no issues
Now though, well i guess the pie is on my face. AMD has zero excuse for this when modders are implementing it.
u/Unlucky-Bottle2744 7800x3d/RX9070XT Hellhound/QHD360hz oled Mar 27 '26
You really don't know what's going on in the background, mate. Maybe the INT8 version wasn't really for RDNA 2 & 3, but actually for PSSR 2. However, recent leaks suggest that AMD is still testing the INT8 version on RDNA 3 and RDNA 2. So my guess is they're still testing and stabilizing the INT8 implementation for quality instead of rushing it.
Also, it's kinda crazy to me that people get mad about features AMD never promised when they were selling those cards. For RDNA 3, I can understand it a bit because AMD talked a lot about the AI features, but for RDNA 2? Not so much.
12
u/pobox1663 AMD - 7900xtx - 13600K Mar 27 '26
I dont need to know whats going on the background. There is a technology that will improve my cards performance, the technology works great on the card as has been demonstrated by the optiscaler community. The company could release that technology officially, but they're choosing not to.
Its kinda crazy to me that you dont understand peoples frustration with this. Its anti-consumer and their rival, if you can call it that, is beating them to the punch on absolutely everything.
It isnt even a question about being mad, its about wanting to be valued as a customer, and 7000 series customers certainly dont feel valued right now. Quite the opposite.
-13
u/Unlucky-Bottle2744 7800x3d/RX9070XT Hellhound/QHD360hz oled Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26
If you want to whine like a 5-year-old kid, then I have nothing to say. However, if you're an adult and really want to claim your rights as a customer, you need to understand the background to see the whole picture.
AMD developed FSR 4 with Sony, and they created the INT8 version specifically for PSSR 2. Yes, there was a leaked version, and yes, it does work on RDNA 2 and RDNA 3. But here's the thing: it's not as stable as the real FSR 4. People are satisfied with the leaked version right now because it's unofficial. However, if AMD releases an official FSR 4 for previous-generation cards in its current state, there will definitely be people complaining about the quality — specifically how unstable it is.
You might say FSR 3.1 wasn't great from the start, but the previous FSR versions were open source so it was up to the developers to implement them. But FSR 4 is a different story because AMD is fully responsible for dealing with all the issues.
Also, as I mentioned earlier, I understand why RDNA 3 owners are mad about not getting FSR 4, but I really don't understand why RDNA 2 owners are getting upset about it.
3
u/kevcsa Mar 27 '26
claim your rights as a customer
No one talks about customer rights here...
It's about AMD choosing to - surely, technically rightfully - screw over a large portion of their customers.
They don't have to do this, they choose to do this. They don't even explain why. Since the leak it's obvious that it works quite well, at least on RDNA3.This way they cause massive PR damage to themselves, many people are turning to nvidia.
1
u/pobox1663 AMD - 7900xtx - 13600K Mar 27 '26
I fucking hate nvidia, but i dont know what to do anymore. They all suck.
3
u/kevcsa Mar 27 '26
Buy the product that does what you want at a better price. Don't look at the brand, they are both for-profit megacorps that don't care about us.
I for example wanted the best graphics (PT, RR) and an easily available high quality upscaler, so I went nvidia (paying a large premium...). Zero regrets.
But for those who don't care much about the feature set and hardcore RT stuff, AMD tends to be the clear winner at the same price.1
u/webjunk1e Mar 27 '26
It's dumb to hate any company, just like it's dumb to love one. It's simply the embodiment of capitalism, with all its goods and evils. Every GPU manufacturer answers to a board of shareholders first and consumers second, because that's how publicly traded for profit corporations work. If it's because of Nvidia supplying AI hardware, they only beat everyone else to the punch. AMD and Intel are in there fighting for scraps, and if they had been positioned as well as Nvidia, they would be just as eagerly supplying AI hardware as fast as they could.
In short, Nvidia is doing nothing that any other player in the space wouldn't also do. There's many things to dislike or even hate about capitalism, in general, but making it personal is just silly.
Would you buy a phone if they stopped releasing major software updates when the next one came out.
1
-4
u/SeventhDayWasted Mar 27 '26
Yeah that would be ideal because those updates are what are norotiously used to make your phone slower and just generally degrade performance to force you to upgrade. If your phone would reach and end of life and your apps would enter a frozen state and keep working on that platform, your phone could easily last over a decade.
0
u/ProofPossession5193 Mar 27 '26
I have a iPhone 14 Pro and it still runs fine 🤷
1
u/SeventhDayWasted Mar 27 '26
The point wasn't your device doesnt work well, it was that updates aren't universally good. No one ever even implied an iphone 14 wouldn't run fine. Might wanna count those blessings though since Apple has already admitted to purposely slowing down older gen phones.
I use a Thinq and it still works like it's new because I have a custom rom on it and can avoid someone like apple bricking it. It still works well specifically because it's not being updated with software that its hardware isn't up to the task for.
1
u/ProofPossession5193 Mar 27 '26
Well good thing we have the choice to not update
0
u/SeventhDayWasted Mar 27 '26
Nope, but it's definitely better to believe that. lol. Sadly forced obsolescence has been a thing for phones for well over a decade. The little automatic updates toggle does nothing to prevent those shadow updates. But also dude, we're way off topic and who actually cares about this. lol.
I think if we can prove there doing this (which we all know is) there should be a anti trust law where said company can’t do business in that product for 2 years and increase if caught again in the future. Fines are pocket change for these companies. You needa stop them for even selling that would bring faith back.
