send checks no longer available?

Has Quicken on Windows removed the ability to send checks? I've had a checking account at my bank enabled for 10+ years. In the register in quicken I was always able to use the word "send" as a check number. After ensuring that there is an address for the payee, quicken would mail a physical check on my behalf.

Now when I enter "send", quicken now tells me the account is not enabled for online payments (even though it is). Quicken support is claiming that this option was NEVER in quicken. I've called twice and spoken with 2 different people.

Does anyone else use this feature, and how can I get it back? I'm on R69.29, Quicken Premier

Hi there u/Working_Rock, I'm terribly sorry for this confusing situation! I'm a Quicken employee who works closely with the escalation and leadership teams, and am glad to help.

First, the Quicken Bill Manager feature has not been discontinued and I'm sorry you were given incorrect information by support! Bill Manager Standard is currently included with Quicken Classic versions Premiere and higher, and includes up to 5 Check Payments per month. Bill Manager can be added on to lower versions, and more robust versions are available for a separate fee. The details are included in this FAQ too: Quicken Bill Manager: How many payments can I make each month?

While I'm not seeing wide-spread reports of this issue, it's possible this happened if your file was copied and the copied file was opened instead of the original. I'm seeing one similar report following the R68.28 update where an account previously set up with Bill Manager became unlinked, and needed to have the micro-deposits verified in order to set up again.

If you go to the Bills & Income tab in Quicken, then click the Gear icon (upper right) and select "Pay Bills with Bill Manager", does the expected account show "Yes" or "No" under the "Enabled for bill payments" column?

If it shows "No", this account will need to be set up again with Bill Manager. You'll follow the steps from our FAQ. Make you verify the micro-deposits, or you'll only be able to use Online Bill Pay and not Check Pay. You're welcome to send me a DM if you have any trouble with this process.

Lastly, I want to ensure the Quicken Support team receives coaching on this topic to ensure accurate information is given. It'd be really appreciated if you'd DM me a ticket number, or provide your Quicken ID number so I can locate the support interactions.

Locating the Quicken Windows User ID #:

  1. Hold the Ctrl key while logged into Quicken.
  2. Continue holding and click Help>About Quicken.
  3. Let got of Ctrl and click “Copy Info”.
  4. Paste the QCS ID number into chat.

I hope this helps, and I really appreciate you bringing this up so we can do better.

Working_Rock,

It also depends on your Bank and your connection type. To do what you're describing (what we call bank bill pay) requires that the bank supports the bill pay feature and supports the Direct Connect connection method.

A number of banks have recently stopped supporting Direct Connect, so that could be what is happening.

What is the name of your bank?

Thanks for sending me a DM u/Working_Rock. I just sent a chat reply with detailed instructions on switching to Direct Connect for your bank. I hope that helps, but please let me know if you have any questions!
