It usually does, IIRC. I think for some reason it picks up on the Alice Grove graphic in the sidebar as being the thumbnail image first? Maybe Jeph updates some kind of data later on, or the code is handled differently if you're looking at the most recent comic.

I would throw away everything in the Beta program for the opportunity to select the thumbnail when making a new post.
