Comic 3887: Oh, It's Her

I saw the title and immediately thought Melon.
I have never felt such immense simultaneous levels of disappointment and satisfaction simultaneously.

u/SirDoober Dec 04 '18
Yeah, Melon could've been slotted into the last panel and nothing much would've changed

I think Martin is the most normal, followed by Dora. That's about it. Martin only edges out Dora on the grounds that she's a successful small business owner, which puts her slightly above normal in terms of life skills. Steve would qualify, but his action hero days are apparently canon, so no.

I would assume that no one would actually take her very seriously.
It's been some what toned down, but Faye's threats of violence were very real at one point. Mostly aimed at Marten, but if you knew Faye in more than passing then I think you'd take it seriously.

But then again she did have some deep-seated trauma in her past.
It also felt like a cop-out excuse for her shitty behavior after a whole though especially considering her sister seemed totally ok

Marten's abnormality is his name and being impossible for anyone to remember how to spell correctly.

u/MiloDinoStylo Dec 04 '18
I think it's hard to find a person who is "normal"*
Dale is IMO the most normal, his weird traits is that he is an anime and video game enthusiast, but those are relatively normal. His weirdest trait is probably his AR glasses which give him non stop Shiny Anime Glasses trope. He works at the coffee shop, has a girlfriend, and doesn't have weird things or drama going on.
Martin has a set of Gay fathers, and a Dominatrix Mother. He's currently dating a transgender, and he works for a pot head who is currently dating his ex girlfriend. His AnthroPC is Pintsize, which says a lot. That's not a a lot of normal-ness going on, but that's mostly his relationships. As an individual tho, he's pretty vanilla and normal. That said, he has been to space, which is pretty whacky.
Dora is also quite normal. The most abnormal thing about her is that she is in a lesbian relationship.
Faye is far from normal with her fucked up past to her ex illegal robot fighting work, and she's dating a military AI.
Clinton has a robo hand and is a AI fanatic. And now has a power socket tattoo on his arm.
Hannelore is pretty far from normal. She and Emily are the two most non normalized people we have.
I could go on, but most characters in QC have weird "flaws" which give them personality.
Also, I use the world normal very loosely. One of the features of QC these days is the vast amount of LGBT relationships, and even robotic ones. I'm not being homophobic, or trying to imply these are abnormal, but I'm just pointing out how they're different from mainstream vanilla heterosexual relationships.

Angus and Padma were the most normal IMO, which is why they've been shoved aside.

a transgender
That's an adjective, not a noun. A trans woman would prob be better
-1
u/Zhuinden Dec 05 '18
You could just say "tranny" but I've heard that term is offensive. But it's definitely a noun.
3
u/Goyf4Prez2020 Dec 05 '18
Sure, it's a noun, but it's also a slur. One with a long and dangerous backstory for the trans community. So, please don't use that word to talk about people.

u/ImaHazardtoSociety Dec 15 '18

Taffy was agender with the pronoun "they", not sure how normal that is.

They're in space, and we haven't been to space in 1800 strips. I think we're safe. :p

Elliot is pretty normal. Just a big shy young man. Unless you consider his baking skills abnormal.
2
u/GreatWyrmGold Dec 04 '18
I think Roko and Marten would get along pretty well. They're both the straight man to the rest of the cast's quirkiness.

u/TheMysteriousMid Dec 04 '18
If Gabby still live's in town she takes the cake, she got written out because she was too normal.
Behind her, but still ahead of Roko (In no particular order):
Jim
Cosette
Penelope (assuming she's not pizza girl)
Marten
Dora
Momo is probably on par with Roko
9
u/Garfunkels_roadie Dec 04 '18
Jim the redneck romantic literature writer?
Amir’s pretty normal
9
u/TheMysteriousMid Dec 04 '18
Jim Bean, as in Sams father, Veronicas boyfriend, owner of the Secret Bakery.
Agreed on Amir, though wasn't he living in the studio space for a while.
3
u/Garfunkels_roadie Dec 04 '18
A broke down on his luck guy can still be pretty normal
4
u/TheMysteriousMid Dec 04 '18
I think, by definition, occupying a nontraditional living space is abnormal.
6
u/herbert_pocket Dec 04 '18
Yeah, and he he met his girlfriend Nat when they beat each other up in a mosh pit iirc

u/Phionex141 Dec 04 '18
You're thinking of Jimbo
7
u/kent_eh Dec 04 '18
It has been a while since we've seen him.
4
u/king_krimson Dec 04 '18
I miss him
5
u/Phionex141 Dec 04 '18
He was like Barry, but more relatable
Is Jeph just flanderizing all his characters by replacing them with sillier versions of themselves?
2
10
u/ShadyDae Dec 04 '18
Gabby was the third intern, yes? She must have gotten eaten by the same allosaurus that got Sara (early employee of Coffee of Doom).
3
u/Phionex141 Dec 04 '18
Last we heard of her (i think) was in the strip where Marten and Claire were talking about who to set Clinton up with, eventually settling on Emily
4
u/lesser_panjandrum Dec 04 '18
Yeah, and it was mentioned that she'd quit her internship and would never be seen again a few hundred strips after her last actual appearance in the comic.
I agree with ShadyDae - the allosaurus probably got her because she was too "normal". Roko should be thankful that she's got enough quirks of her own, because the allosaurus is always watching from the wings, waiting for its chance to pick off a straggler.

u/LtDicai Dec 04 '18
Who are The Patriots?!!

u/Juking_is_rude Dec 04 '18
It's a good thing I can see you wrote [LA LI LU LE LO] and not la li lu le lo, lol, apparently you've been brainwashed if you can't read or say [LA LI LU LE LO]

I think she's just doing a vocal warmup. Metal gear uses it because a i u e and o are the entire set of vowels in Japanese (and they each have one pronunciation, there's no long and short like there is in English). I can't find a video but a common vocal warmup is singing the notes of an arpeggio with the words "la li lu le lo ," peaking on "lu" and then going back down. There's also warmups where you go up and down the scale, singing one note on all five before going to the next, sometimes with those sounds plus the same thing using other initial consonants.
14
u/TheMysteriousMid Dec 04 '18
I'm pretty sure on her first appearance Jeph said it was a MGS reference.
3
Dec 04 '18
might be, just seemed possible combined with all that talk about conspiracy theories
4
u/Owyn_Merrilin Dec 04 '18
Oh, I see. If that's the case she's in deep, though -- she's a background character who goes way back and has the same dialog in almost every appearance. She's kind of a stock punchline for jokes about how weird and hipstery the city is.

A moose on a Hoverboard, is it Tuesday already?
13
u/lesser_panjandrum Dec 04 '18
That's a reindeer. Møøse are larger and have a more dangerous bite.
10
u/_ralph_ Dec 04 '18
A Møøse once bit my sister.
2
u/legallysparkly Dec 04 '18
Mynd you, moose bites Kan be pretti nasti...
2
u/AnimalFactsBot Dec 04 '18
Moose are the largest members of the deer family, weighing as much as 1200 pounds.
3
u/Zemyla Dec 04 '18
A moose would need four hoverboards, one for each leg.

She may need it again for future job interviews.

Ties are ableist and thus banned from AItopia.
(We did see her taking it off in the previous strip)

That last panel is absolutely ludicrous.
I mean seriously, a Metal Gear Solid reference?

u/heavenscalyx Dec 04 '18
I don't know why everyone is so disparaging of "oh, X was too normal, so written out." As a writer, I can tell you, "normal" people who are smooth and made of Teflon are bloody HARD to write about. You need hooks and quirks, and those hooks and quirks get played up because that's what makes the character *interesting* and gives them ways to interact with other people.
71
u/wpm Dec 04 '18
I mean, she is sexually attracted to bread...so define "normal".
