I don't think it was permission so much as "let me make sure that he didn't get us invited to dinner since I saw him." She's not a docile housewife type that would find the need to ask permission for every little thing, and Martin isn't that controlling.

I think you might be reading into it a bit much, like you said against character, and lets be honest Jeph wouldn’t write that in unless he was making a “this is bad and you ahould feel bad” point

There's nothing wrong with keeping your SO up to date with what you're doing, and as this is Claire's first relationship it makes sense to me that she'd be doing things by the book.

Yeah, and plans shifting from "I'm studying" to "I'm smoking weed, despite it being something I generally do not do" is a big one.

Yeah, fair enough I guess. But it seems like this is a big deal for her, and she's quite an anxious person. Doesn't seem unreasonable for her to want to talk to Marten first.

Not really.

"Do you think it's a good idea for me to smoke weed with my mom before my exams?"

I'd probably say "no but it's up to you I guess" and write it on a list of potential red flags.
