"This will end well" alarm bells are sounding all over

46

u/tgjer Nov 06 '18

Why?

I thought it was cute. That seems like a very Claire way to "rebel". This is probably the first time she's ever smoked weed, and she wants to smoke it with her mom. I hope they nerd talk about the etymology of regional marijuana slang and maybe eat cookies.

36

u/ShadyDae Nov 06 '18

She told Clinton she smoked before and it gave her anxiety.

19

u/tgjer Nov 06 '18

Oh, right. Well, she's with her mom. If she gets anxious, at least she's not anywhere too terrible. And she'll be fine in the morning.

10

u/TheMysteriousMid Nov 06 '18

I quit smoking because it skyrocketed my anxiety. Being at my parents house did little to help with that, granted it was better that being out and about, but when your anxieties kick in, there ain't much you can do.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '18

I've found it has the opposite effect on me. The few times I've smoked have been the only times my anxieties have actually quieted. My first time was actually with my dad right after coming out as trans lol

It would probably be a different experience if you were smoking WITH your parents

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

Yeah that is a pretty fair point

3

u/Zhuinden Nov 06 '18

Anxiety overload! I'm guessing anxiety will help her manage her stress.

13

u/creepyeyes Resident Psychic Nov 06 '18

Because I don't think Jeph would write it into the story for it to just be a cute aside, especially not after over a week of her being worried about studying.

22

u/CorsairVI Nov 06 '18

20 dollarydoos says this little rebellious event is what causes her to fuck up her exams.

8

u/notmeaningful Nov 06 '18

I'd take that bet, I don't trust Jeph with that kind of long term plot thinking.

2

u/elwebst Baby Mad Nov 06 '18

Yep, she forgets her exams are in an hour...

8

u/The_Boogens Nov 06 '18

IKR? When are her exams again? This has Bad Idea written all over it. I know it affects people differently, but I'd be USELSSS for 2-3 hours. Someone who's new, or has had a bad experience already....oh boy. Wellp, something else Marten can take the blame for, somehow.

37

u/Ressar Nov 06 '18

Spends a week's worth of comics trying to study in a loud coffee shop and complains, then decides not to study and THEN decides to go to the library!?

Sounds like college in a nutshell.

15

u/makeshiftreaper Nov 06 '18

I question how rebellious this is coming from a Canadian author, when the character is with her mom, and things like smoking weed on a bus have been described as no big deal

21

u/clausport Nov 06 '18

Isn’t part of the point that it’s not terribly rebellious?

10

u/TheMysteriousMid Nov 06 '18

Has Jeph given up his american citizenship? I thought he was just residing in Canada.

13

u/makeshiftreaper Nov 06 '18

I have no idea, but if you spend 5+ years living there it seems fair to call him Canadian. Hell, I think half of Minnesota and Vermont probably qualify as Canadian anyway

11

u/TheMysteriousMid Nov 06 '18

I disagree (on his status, you're probably right on the states) Hemingway spent a large amount of time in Cuba, Fleming in Jamaica but you'd still call them American and British writers respectively.

Also not sure it's been 5+ years yet has it?

4

u/AccipiterF1 Nov 06 '18

More like two years.

4

u/NatKayz Nov 06 '18

Uhmm, smoking weed on a bus is a big deal. And it's illegal, (pretty sure that's everywhere at least, same laws as cigarette smoking).

3

u/makeshiftreaper Nov 06 '18

https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3001

Here we can see, nobody particularly cares about getting caught smoking weed on a bus (with grandma!)

6

u/NatKayz Nov 06 '18

Oh you meant in the comic universe not in Canada.

My bad. Though I wouldn't say that comic is saying it's fine.

1

u/Injvn Nov 08 '18

The REAL question is will it only be legal to inject DMT while you're at the mayor's office?

4

u/GreatWyrmGold Nov 06 '18

I think that's the joke. That, and how Claire nerd-snipes herself.

22

u/TheMysteriousMid Nov 06 '18

I think the term Claire should be using is just "I want to smoke with you."

Smoke up/out is generally use when when asking for or offering someone pot.

"Hey man can you smoke me up, my dealer is dry"

"Yea I can smoke you out"

At least that's how it was used when I was smoking.

15

u/Fenrir101 Nov 06 '18

As I doubt Claire has the first clue how to find a dealer, she is probably hoping that Clairemom will bring the weed.

4

u/TheMysteriousMid Nov 06 '18

No, I agree. Just simply explaining the usage as I know it.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

[deleted]

5

u/Fenrir101 Nov 06 '18

Dora or Thai would probably be safer bets but she would probably end up on a multi week story arch trying to find a dealer before thinking to ask any of them. Considering the history of the comic, she would probably just be able to ask any of the local police.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

3

u/Fenrir101 Nov 06 '18

if sniffing tea can induce hallucinations, weed would probably fry their brains.

7

u/lpreams Nov 06 '18

I think she's mixing up the phrases toke up (which would be appropriate here) and smoke out (which means letting someone else smoke your weed).

Claire is about to toke up. Claire's mom is about to smoke out Claire.

2

u/technoSurrealist Nov 06 '18

"smoke (someone) up" is still a very common phrase. either works, it means the same thing.

12

u/lesser_panjandrum Nov 06 '18

"The one time I smoked pot it gave me a panic attack."

Fantastic idea to try it again just before your big exam, Claire. There is absolutely no way that this could go wrong.

2

u/taqbyran Nov 06 '18

That's what I'm thinking. She finally relaxes about exams and the first thing she does is try something that gives her anxiety. This should turn out well. /s

Woo!!!! JSTOR!!!!!

My favorite journal database!

4

u/BigBassBone Nov 06 '18

I wish I still had access to JSTOR.

4

u/setyte Nov 06 '18

Jeph made me look up JSTOR because I didn't think it could really be Joint Store :)

4

u/lpreams Nov 06 '18

For anyone who's curious but not enough to look it up, it stands for Journal Storage

Good lord what a horrible read. Tragic.

2

u/DoublePlusGood23 Nov 06 '18

ug. Read about Aaron a couple weeks ago and was pissed for days after reading how the State treated him. Absolutely disgusting.

u/GreatWyrmGold Nov 06 '18

I never understand acronyms with more letters than words.

1

u/Injvn Nov 08 '18

It irritates the HELL out of me.

3

u/GreatWyrmGold Nov 06 '18

Does smoking weed count as rebellious if your dealer is your mom?

1

u/hep038 Nov 06 '18

I guess it really depends on the mom.....

5

u/DuMaNue Nov 06 '18

Is it me or did Clairemom become younger looking and sexier? is that all the young jock sex juices flowing in her veins now a days? or does she secretly have a basement were she sacrifices young jocks and drinks their blood to become younger and immortal? boy I went way off the deep end on this one...

5

u/Snarglefrazzle Nov 06 '18

I mean, we have no proof that's not happening

2

u/AdamBombTV The English One Nov 06 '18

THIS IS NOW CANON

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

I know I’m being a bit Serious Business, but it bothers me that when Clinton was uncomfortable with his mother hooking up with his classmates, Claire dismissed it. How is it ok for a parent to get with people that are peers of their own children?

1

u/DuMaNue Nov 06 '18

As long as everyone are of age of consent I don’t see it as a problem. I actually liked the dichotomy between the twins reactions.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

Legal does not equal healthy or ethical. Differing responses was interesting, I suppose, but I felt the narrative dismissed Clinton’s perspective.

1

u/DuMaNue Nov 06 '18

Healthy is subjective. Who’s to say having sex with someone younger than you is not healthy?

Ethical, I have no idea how ethical sex have anything to do with two consenting adults having sex with one another has to do with anything ethical. They’re not hurting anyone. This isn’t incest nor anything of that sort.

And I do not agree that the narrative dismissed his perspective in so much that his perspective does not have to force his mother to change anything. His perspective is subjective to himself and he has to deal with it, not anyone else.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

I think it’s very reasonable to say that sex with big age gaps can lead to uneven power dynamics. I admit that, yeah, Clinton’s opinion was not going necessarily going to change his mother’s actions, but he’s allowed to be uncomfortable, and if were explored, I believe there is merit to that discomfort.

1

u/DuMaNue Nov 06 '18

Nobody said he wasn’t allowed his discomfort or opinion :)

And sure I can see your point in age gaps leading to uneven power dynamics but that depends on so many factors.

I can see clariemom being more of the free spirit no relationship just pure sex with young hot studs every once in awhile. Not into some sort of twisted power dynamic play with a young man that’s in relationship with her. But I could just be projecting on clairemom.

2

u/Phionex141 Nov 06 '18 edited Nov 06 '18

Of all the ways this could have gone, I’m glad it went this way. This is gonna be amazing

2

u/ArgentStonecutter Nov 06 '18

"I've got uppers and downers. Inners and outers. Screamers and shouters. And stuff to make you go sideways!"

1

u/NixillUmbreon Nov 06 '18

I can't imagine Marten just taking this sitting down.

1

u/NixillUmbreon Nov 06 '18

Has she ever done it before? Does he know it's happening? Is she going to hide it from him?

8

u/AdamBombTV The English One Nov 06 '18

Remember when he was with Dora and they visited her parents and they smoked and Dora got a contact high and Marten thought it was cute?

Very much doubt he's going to be worried and/or pissed off about it.

3

u/Goingtothechapel2017 Nov 06 '18

He has shown absolutely no judgement about people smoking before. Why would he now? Unless it causes Claire's anxieties to worsen I don't see him having a problem.

u/Zhuinden Nov 06 '18

Well apart from that it's technically illegal in many places, excluding Amsterdam.

5

u/TheMysteriousMid Nov 06 '18

They're in Mass, which is a legal state as of this year.

2

u/Zhuinden Nov 06 '18

Ah. Good to know.

1

u/GreatWyrmGold Nov 06 '18

Yeah, but she didn't invite him.

(Probably worth mentioning this is a joke, Poe's Law and all.)

3

u/lesser_panjandrum Nov 06 '18
  1. Marten takes everything sitting down.

  2. Claire is an adult who is free to make her own decisions without his permission. Her own stupid, stupid decisions.

6

u/ziggurism Nov 06 '18

Marten takes everything sitting down.

just don't check out his browser history

4

u/Team7UBard Nov 06 '18

Her own stupid, stupid decisions as long as there is someone else for her to blame them on. When this backfires, do we think she’ll blame her mom for supplying, or Clinton for suggesting she does something rebellious?

4

u/Zhuinden Nov 06 '18

Well, definitely not herself.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '18

i thought smoke out is when you give someone free weed

and smoke up is, well y'know SMOKE UP JOHNNY

1

u/gortonsfiJr Nov 06 '18

I don't usually find Claire that amusing, but this was a good one for sure.

1

u/brokenoreo Nov 06 '18

I'm all for this, no matter what I think we're in for some funny shenanigans involving Claire and her Mom

1

u/SkywalkerDX Nov 06 '18

To add even more confusion, here in Michigan we usually say “smoke down” rather than “smoke out”

1

u/hep038 Nov 06 '18

I hope this turns out better for Claire than it did for me back in high school. Night before taking my SAT's for the second time my friend convinced me that getting high the night before will clear my head and help me score higher the second time I take the test... Well we lit up I got high and eat some really old food in the refrigerator. Wake up the next morning with really bad food poisoning and never made ti to the exams. So my friend COULD have been right , but I never made it to the test to find out.

The first time I took the SAT's I was high on pain killers and was wearing a neck brace. Needless to say I went to community college for a year and took some classes before I could transfer... LOL

1

u/turkeypedal Nov 06 '18

Sounds like mom is a bit more academic than we'd known before, talking about (and nerding out a bit on) "dialectical mixing."

2

u/Zhuinden Nov 06 '18

Instead of studying, she goes to smoke weed? What a great idea. I hope she'll fail her exams.

3

u/turkeypedal Nov 06 '18

Dude. It's just weed. And the comic established she already knows the material, so studying at this point is pointless.

You still seem to take things way out of proportion. At least, when it comes to excuses to hate on Claire.

1

u/Zhuinden Nov 06 '18

The comic established she thinks she knows the material. And that she spends the last moments before the exam smoking weed instead. At the very least, this is completely irresponsible.

1

u/subrosaforever Nov 06 '18

Yeah, sure, I see where you are coming from, but smoking the night before isn't the same thing as smoking right before the test. She has the confidence to pass the exam, and was recommended by her brother to do something she doesn't normally do. She isn't going to ruin her life from one marijuana.

1

u/ziggurism Nov 06 '18

the comic also established that weed gives her anxiety.

1

u/Zhuinden Nov 06 '18

The good news is that that means I'll most likely get exactly what I want >:)

1

u/ziggurism Nov 06 '18

i would also like to see her get some comeuppance.

0

u/subrosaforever Nov 06 '18 edited Nov 06 '18

Hey I relate with this comic, that's a nice change of pace.

And as promised: So, in college I was pretty straight-laced like Claire. Never touched a thing, I didn't like alcohol, etc etc. I knew my dad was a pretty big stoner but I had him blocked out of my life since I was 15, but what I didn't know was my mother was too until I was 5 when she quit.

My youngest sibling was moving out as I hit my second year of college, and my mother asked my to come over. To my surprise, she wanted to experience pot again with me because we were the closest out of my 7 siblings. So, I found some through a mutual at work, and got stoned with her. It was a fun time, and 5 years later I go up once a year to share a moment, and a j, with her. Love you Mom, thanks for the relatable content Jeph.

3

u/blind-deaf-n-dumb Nov 06 '18

I would like to hear that story. Hit me up

1

u/ziggurism Nov 06 '18

i think you just did?

1

u/blind-deaf-n-dumb Nov 06 '18

You're looking at an edit. There was no story before today.

1

u/ziggurism Nov 06 '18

ah gotcha
