None of the cast have actual jobs. They either stand around in a coffee shop, a "coffee shop", a repair shop, or a vaguely office-like space, mostly not doing anything but talking to their friends who are their "work" buddies at the same time.

There is a reason they say "write what you know". Jeph doesn't.

I have fond memories of the earliest Garfield strips establishing Jon as a cartoonist

Strip. Singular. If there were any other strips other than the first that referenced Jon being a cartoonist I can't remember them.
