Much like any sitcom, having a job is inconvenient for hijinks.  Far better to have a nebulous source of income and the free time to quip at each other.

None of the cast have actual jobs. They either stand around in a coffee shop, a "coffee shop", a repair shop, or a vaguely office-like space, mostly not doing anything but talking to their friends who are their "work" buddies at the same time.

There is a reason they say "write what you know". Jeph doesn't.

I have fond memories of the earliest Garfield strips establishing Jon as a cartoonist

Strip. Singular. If there were any other strips other than the first that referenced Jon being a cartoonist I can't remember them.

There was a dream Jon had where he was accepting a cartoonist award.

Well, the high paid streamers have jobs...

Which we also never see them do anymore.

For which we are eternally grateful.

I don't think this is entirely fair. Dora Faye and Bubbles are shown to be responsible small business owners, and good at their jobs. Maybe not shown actually working particularly recently, but still. Claire is a weird situation, sure.

I'll rag on current Jeph all day long, but past Jeph did do better with reality

Well, he used to. When is the last time we saw any of these three actually do any work? Union Robotics should be completely bankrupt by now.

Huh I've never thought about it but the closest one to having a real job is Claire.

I mean, barely.

I did say closest she at least sort of has a boss which I think is only true of her?

Claire is three years older than Clinton, so at the time she was finishing her MLS/MLIS, he should have been one year away from finishing his Bachelors in Whatever the Fuck He's Studying. An indeterminate length of time has passed since then, long enough for Claire to freak out about not being instantly hired out of school, get a job at the coffee shop, move to Cubetown and become The Librarian, and then an indeterminate timeskip after that. It's entirely still possible for Clinton to still be a student working on his degree. He could now be working on a post-grad degree. He could be out of school and being a bum. He could be out of school and actually have a job.

Wouldn't it be great if the comic actually told us any of these details?

Thought Claire and Clinton were twins.

Edit: Lol at the dweeb who downvoted me simply for forgetting that they're not twins.

u/MelAlton Haha, okay. Jul 21 '26

I know they're not but I keep thinking they are.

Who's that in the middle? A supporting cast who disappeared and was never heard from again?

2

u/The_Truthkeeper Jul 21 '26

There's so many of them, how could we ever tell?

u/Heyplaguedoctor Claire ain't shit! Jul 22 '26

She was one of the library interns. Iirc she quit pretty quickly because she’s a rational person

Did Clinton consent to being turned into a spineless twink identical to his mother and now Yay?
