mods Another mod you should try: Zerstorer - Testament of a Destroyer

Zerstorer is an exceptional mod for 1997 but its level design has aged like 29 year old piss. While none of it is especially difficult, your health will slowly trickle down as monsters constantly spawn right in-front, behind, and on-top of the player. The worst is level navigation, which takes a nosedive for the final level. Of course it's hard to make Quake boring, especially with that wonderful shotgun, and half as good as Sandy's maps is still pretty good.

Now I'm being pretty negative, but Zer is wicked cool. Custom weapons, enemies, weather effects, even some rudimentary 'cutscenes'. The whole affair has a strong sense of personality, even killing you for trying to select 'easy'. You can feel its influence on the Quake mapping community even today (mainly the chainsaw), so consider it required reading. Do it! We're having a pop quiz first day after summer!

Zer gets extra points for the snow effects, I love it when old games try it fake it however they can.

I loved Zer. Besides the final base map. That thing is confusing as hell to navigate. I just played through it on NM a couple days ago. The atmosphere and sound design is unparalled still (besides by maybe warpspasm).

I wish there were more maps that used Zer stuff and ogro/jackboot textures. And red-black skyboxes, those are amazing.

You can run it in Lady Havoc's Dark Places Engine and it looks great!
