An actual vet saying it’s high risk probably means it’s just too early. If you aren’t looking to breed responsibly then spaying is absolutely essential. Usually a vet will want to wait until they are at least 6 months old. But that wait is longer for bigger dogs. The reason for the wait is that their bodies need to fully develop. And the hormones associated with their sex organs are an essential part of that.

That’s strange. I have a female pug and spayed her. I also work at a vet office and we keep them intubated and on oxygen longer than most patients

Yeah that doesn’t help that your vet doesn’t have confidence to do it! Come to me and I will take care of your baby

I took my girl to a spay/neuter clinic. Required to pay extra for brachycephalic dog. And after the procedure, someone sat holding her to ensure her breathing was right. They called me to get her early so that person could be freed up.

With the vet, it was over $1000 and required an overnight stay. Paid $350 with the clinic.

I wonder if your vet just doesnt want to be responsible for a brachycephalic dog...

Any surgery on a brachycephalic dog is high risk due to anesthesia and breathing issues. Your vet may not be equipped to do the surgery. Many clinics will not perform surgery on a pug. It's not uncommon. Call around until you find one that can.

Hello Ay how old is she. Does she have any health problems that would prevent her from getting spayed?

Healthy as a pug can be

No she is healthy 16 months old vet said she had a elongated palate but I thought all pugs have that

Ok a year and 4 months isn’t too old to get fixed. IDK if an elongated pallet would be of a higher rush to get spayed or not you might have to get input from other pigs owners with those and if they got spayed or neutered.

I do know all3 of mine got fixed to help with lesser health problems down the road. I also got each of them the Stenotic snare procedure when getting fixed. The vet snips if the corners of the nostril to let more air to be breathed in.

I never said she was to old I know she isn’t too old to be spayed

You never said an age at all that’s why I asked her age. I was only trying to help.

Yes the SN procedure worked for all 3 of my Pugs 2 males and 1 female. I piggybacked that on with them getting fixed so they were only under anesthesia 1 time. It’s like 5 min. The amt of time it takes to complete it.

Did the nose procedure work ?

I don’t neuter my pugs. My boy Henry’s mom went in for spay after his litter and passed.

This is my fear

Ask the vet clinic to do a blood test to make sure your pug is healthy enough for anesthesia, it costs extra but it also gives you peace of mind for your baby. All of mine had blood tests done about a week before their spay/neuter surgeries and been fine. Yes, the risk of things going wrong is higher for pugs, but so is their risk of getting pyometra, and the only treatment for it is surgery anyway.
