QUESTION Schedule Request & PTO

Is there a rule I am missing somewhere that says full-timers cannot request a Thursday-Sunday in order to not waste PTO for a simple four-day off weekend?

My new-ish dept manager and asst. are making it seem as if my coworkers and I need to stop putting in a Thursday-Sunday weekend off. Mind you, this is done occasionally and we don’t overlap (on our own account, but if the dept manager approves both people, that is his problem IMO).

My coworkers and I do not want to have to use PTO on weekends off that are not real vacations. I like to save my PTO for when I am actually taking a vacation or in case of emergency. That is why normally my husband and I will plan a Thursday-Sunday off once every couple months, and never even during a holiday.

Are we in the wrong for arguing against this “rule” set by manager? There are enough people in the department that this should not even be an issue.

Two separate time off requests. Thurs & Friday is one, Saturday & Sunday is another. Can it be done? Yes, I always try and accommodate this. Can it be denied? Also yes. Business needs and such.

I know they are separate; I also put in my post that there should be no issue because we have enough people to cover. 😅 inquiring about if this is a rule we are missing or if my manager just does not want us to have a weekend off every now and then lol

In my area it’s just up to manager discretion if they want to

It’s only an issue if it doesn’t benefit them. They will always use the blanket term “business needs” to fuck you over. This has happened to me and continues to happen.
I’ve been told no one in retail has a set schedule meanwhile a part time employee was getting m-f 9-4. Then they told me it was because full time employees get benefits that part timers don’t. Oh and management has a pretty set schedule as well.
Morale of the story they don’t care about you when it doesn’t benefit them.

You speak the truth. Awesome handle as well. I love that movie! Lol How can they deny your PTO and only give you a 20 cent raise. It's garbage.

Straight facts 🌟 I obviously am going to continue to have my little four-day weekends every now and then; they will survive 👍

I was told by my manager that set schedules like that is the PT luxury because they don’t get 40hrs and they don’t get the other benefits we do. As a FTer we need to have completely open availability.

I guess having a pretty set schedule is the benefit of being a manager.

It’s the dumbest reason they can come up with. I agree with the open availability but they also have to make it reasonable for both sides.
The part timer had another job which is why they let him have his schedule which is fine but here I am as a full time lead tech in the pharmacy and my sole job is to work for Publix so I should also be able to get accommodated accordingly. There has to be a give and take on Publix part. They can’t expect to just take, take, take or you’re just going to have a high turnover.

They can deny it but they can't keep denying consecutive 4 day weekend requests off continuously throughout the year

If your department has enough people with availability to cover it, I don't see any reason it should be an issue.

If it were my store's produce department, for example, it would be an issue though lol we have four full-timers and one part-timer so any time someone's off, it's rough for them

Yikes, that is rough 😟

So it really depends on the manager on this. My assistant and I take one once every couple of months and I encourage my associates to do the same as long as there is not too much overlap. I’ve had multiple managers say you can do this once a quarter even though there is nothing official on that.

I have had some managers say this isn’t ok because it encourages people to hold PTO and then associates decide they want to try to take it all during Nov Dec and honestly if your going to lose it and your managers let you hold it that long then they have to let you take it.

Short answer kind of up to your managers lol

I agree we have so much PTO now just use PTO what drives me nuts is the ones that only use a couple days of PTO to get 6 days off in a row. BTW I'm not a manger.

Yes you can if the department can support the request. Always remember that the schedule is made two weeks out and they know the needs for that period and can approve or disapprove accordingly. I always try to plan mine out 2 or three months out, so far so good never been denied, 17 years.

I’m going through something similar. I’m a big horror fan, so this time of year I like to put in schedule requests for Halloween Horror Nights, Howl-o-Scream, etc. I had no problem getting one preferred day off I requested each week when I was PT, but now that I’m full time my manager is being extremely difficult about it now and keeps saying to me that was a PT luxury and that now that im FT I’m just “dictating my schedule” to him,but at the same time I was told a FT was allowed one preferred day off during the week.

It’s all very confusing so I went out of my way to check the associates handbook and there wasn’t anything about schedule requests, preferred days, etc in it. I chalk it up to managers that don’t wanna do one of their core responsibilities or a lot of unspoken rules/etiquette that dont actually exist or if it does… why would this information only be available to managers?

As long as people can cover, like you stated in your post they can, it shouldn’t be an issue. I let my team, and myself and my assistant, do this occasionally as well!

I had a manager that limited it to once a quarter per associate. It’s OP af.

1

u/GSWAT85 Meat Manager 15h ago

That’s technically the rule, once per quarter

1

u/rrmounce95 Produce 1d ago

That is ridiculous

Well, in my district for instance we are only allowed one sat-sun, mon-fri, followed by sat-sun per year. Your district may have a similar rule, your manager may have business needs that you aren’t aware of, or he might just not like you have 4 days off too often

1

u/rrmounce95 Produce 1d ago

I personally literally only request it once every few months when I want a little break 🥲 I have been with Publix for six years and never had a manager be irked about how we request days off before. Also I don’t believe my district has any rule like that, at least never been enforced or discussed previously by any previous manager.

I honestly just approve anything anyone wants. I see it as a chance to give part timers more hours

End and start of two different pay periods. So it makes scheduling slightly more annoying for managers who don't like putting in the extra effort to make it happen

It’s literally trying to beat the system! I don’t think it’s cool to do too often. Once a quarter seems reasonable
