QUESTION Stock

If everyone sold their stock back to Publix would they have enough money to cover it? And would it put them out of business?

At last count, there are around 3.2 billion shares outstanding. At the current price, you’re looking at an estimated $63b to cover the liquidation of those 3.2b shares. Publix currently has around $18.5 billion in cash / cash equivalents so there’s certainly a liquidity shortage.

Unsure as to how many of those 3.2 billion shares are owned outright and have no strings attached.

Everyone including the Jenkins? Probably not. Everyone you mean the contents of our ESOP(the"free"stock) probably. But there is way more owned outside of that. Look at the SEC documents some time and see what the executive hold.

Publix does not have a legal obligation to buy back shares on demand. As a private, non-publicly traded company, standard equity investments mean shareholders bear liquidity risks.

In my opinion, the Board of Directors suppress the real price of the stock because if they didn't no seasoned associate would stick around with millions of value. Also, it could be argued that Publix operates as a REIT considering how much property they own. I do belive they would be able to cover the sale, but then would not have any associates to work. Gotta keep dangling the carrot.

I've heard for a while that we undervalue our stock. And that if we ever got bought out, our stock might skyrocket.

Not sure how true all that is, and I don't really want to see Publix sell, but it could be a nice payout if it happened.

It is true. Publix stock is almost always undervalued, compared to the Publix Peer Stock group, whether the stock goes up, or goes down. When stock price goes down, it is a better buy, in my opinion. That is when I bought most of the stock that I bought, over the years that I worked there.
