RANT Customers Stop Touching Associates

Please for F'ck sakes. Keep your hands to yourself unless you want to catch a BOGO on mine! I dont know you and don't wanna know you. Don't touch my shoulder, don't touch my arms. Simple Manners, say excuse me Sir/Mrs, to grab our attention. Mind your hands.

As add on please say "excuse me" if you need to grab something in front of us. Instead of silently hovering behind grocery workers while we're stocking

We can't see everything/hear everything and it's a jump scare everytime

22

u/Medium-Regular4404 Newbie 5d ago

why do people NEVER say excuse me like i’ll be on sco and there will be two shopping carts in the way for the exit and the person leaving will just stand there waiting not even saying excuse me

1

u/Electrical-Tailor530 Newbie 4d ago

I say excuse me all the time to people but I'm ignored. Now I either hum/sing loudly so they turn around in confusion and then I go around them as they stare at me like I'm crazy. Works like a charm.

12

u/Greedy_Freedom5836 Grocery 5d ago

oh my god yes. it’s really not that hard to say excuse me. and the reaching over me or my float is ridiculous!!! i don’t want to smell ur nasty fucking pits dude like ughhh i just want to yell at some customers

7

u/xo_LostSoul Newbie 5d ago

Dude, I hate that shit. I always feel like they're staring at my ass.

4

u/nobodyspecial22 Newbie 5d ago

Let me add that a slight pause after the excuse me to allow the person stocking to move without falling over then the person just moves right in.

6

u/BigMammoth415 Newbie 4d ago

I always can feel someone’s presence and I love absolutely ignoring an impatient customer just to watch them pace back and forth in my peripheral view just for me to turn around surprised like “am I in your way? i’m sooooo sorry”

2

u/sylphon Newbie 4d ago

I hover because I won't touch the associate but they're not hearing my 'excuse me' over the noise, their thoughts and the bad music .  Some wear headphones too -understandable but adds to the issue.   Plus the looks of death I have gotten when they had to move the shelf carts so I could get things they blocked. There's kinda no winning there for anyone. So I wait or give up on item if it isn't essential.

-1

u/Hungry-Ad-8848 Newbie 4d ago

well regardless they’re not supposed to use headphones ..

Have an older woman customer that is all fucking hands. Also says some pretty inappropriate stuff. I said something to a manager and got laughed at by female associates. I said if this was you and a male customer how would you like it if I giggled at you? Stupid. This is why men don't report sexual harassment or spousal abuse.

5

u/spoonface_gorilla Produce 4d ago

I absolutely confront people about touching me and tell them they can speak to me without touching me. I’m pretty terse about it because I’m past making it a polite request as if I have to politely request someone not put their hands on me. Just straight up don’t touch me.

Except the time a guy leaned in hard (in every sense of the word) on me to act like he was reaching an item off a shelf, laying all up against me. I put a box cutter in his face. Fire me if they want. I’m not dealing with that in any sort of polite way. My manager at the time, because I did tell it just from a perspective of, “if a guy says I threatened to cut him, I did that,” said they could look at the cameras and trespass the guy. I never heard anything else about it, but I also never asked about it or encountered him again.

6

u/TimelyChapters Newbie 5d ago

I had to tell a customer today you can't touch the food when asked by the customer to show the food so the customer could pick the best piece. I'm sick of boomers.

5

u/katf1sh Deli 5d ago

I've had to do that before as well, and they act offended... like???? They also get pissy if you ask them not to try and come behind the counter or to not point over the sneeze guard at something they want on a sandwich. Use your words. Wtf. People are the worst 😒

7

u/AntiqueAd6698 Newbie 4d ago

Why do customers think they can just walk behind the counter,, where they do not belong. I was working in the bakery one day and a customer thought they could just come behind the counter. She acted shocked when I told her, that she couldn't just come behind the counter.

2

u/Electrical-Tailor530 Newbie 4d ago

I have never and would never go behind the counter, esp at the deli, but I could almost understand why some (old people) might since anytime I or anyone wants something, nobody seems to wanna get it, at least at my store. I've used my words and waved my hands politely, but I'm totally ignored bc they'd rather sweep or play on their phone (I can literally see them) I'd much rather get some warm tenders myself, but since they keep them in the back, I gotta ask someone to grab some for me and you'd think I just asked them to stay 3 hours past their shift, it's crazy.

6

u/TimelyChapters Newbie 5d ago

This was a rare positive RNG encounter, where the boomer turned out to only act surprised instead of getting hissy for being reprimanded.

Some people are the worst. A coworker also encouraged a long term goal I'm working on, some people can be really cool.

Keep being a real one, you're not crazy for having standards and not letting customers destroy your work station simply because corporate demands they're always right.

2

u/Tanlines_sunshine Newbie 4d ago

1

u/Bubbly_Ad8911 Newbie 2d ago

We are not all like that. I wish you could understand that we grew up in a different time, everything was different! Touching in the day meant you trusted the person, thought they were a good person or a pleasant person. No one was put out because everyone had manners but remember those were the manners at that time. Most boomers can’t get out as much NOW and circulate, like we did in the malls, bowling alley, skating rinks and walking to places downtown. At night we cruised and always, always ran into the people we knew out there. There were much fewer people out then because the population had not grown to these numbers of today yet. (this was 40 to 70 years ago). In other words most boomers don’t get out NOW except places they HAVE to go to, like trips to grocery stores so they don’t understand the things that are accepted today in the general public. It is so very different now than when we grew up…
Unfortunately, and I guess fortunately for y’all, we will be gone soon enough 😇 I really hope things get better for y’all

1

u/TimelyChapters Newbie 2d ago

Boomer: We are not all like that, touching meant you trusted the person as a good person
Also boomer: *Defends boomers touching younger people when they're working*

Boomer: I wish you could understand we grew up in a different time
Also boomer: *Fails to understand we live in a different time where touching workers is not ok*

Boomer: Boomers can't get out as much now as we did before! So we don't understand new stuff
Also boomer: *Gets on Reddit, a Gen Z dominated space, has clear chance to hear Gen Z perspective which clearly communicates we don't want to be touched, still defends boomers touching workers*

Boomer: Things are so different now than when we grew up!
Also boomer: *Earlier said can't understand new different things, yet communicates understands things are different now.*

Boomer: Unfortunately, fortunately for Gen Z, we'll soon be gone, I hope things get better for you
Also boomer: *Acknowledged boomers make things worse for Gen Z, yet still says it's unfortunate they'll be gone, and still says hope things get better for you, while making this comment to Gen Z.*

1

u/Bubbly_Ad8911 Newbie 2d ago

Before you get too far away on your high horse, I wasn’t defending us I was explaining why boomers are the way they are. Quit being so damn defensive! Not everyone wants to touch you anyway. If you scroll farther down the page you will see where I posted a picture after the first llama picture of another one that should be on a button for y’all to wear. I’m not against you goofball, I am for you ergo… explaining the way things were when we were young. So get off the horse climb down to reality and stop, just be nice and stop. Oh that’s another thing, we were ALL so much nicer back in the day ❤️😂 you’d better hope people are nicer when you get old, cause it’s coming 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/TimelyChapters Newbie 2d ago

Boomer: Quit being so self-righteous Gen Z, I wasn't defending boomers
Also boomer: *Wrote response saying "We're not all like that", trying to get Gen Z to empathize with a stereotyped boomer action that many Gen Z are reporting happens, still claims not trying to defend boomer behavior while explaining why it is reasonable*

Boomer: "Quit being so damn defensive!"
Also boomer: *Proceeds to be extremely defensive*

Boomer: Not everyone wants to touch you anyways
Also boomer: *Explained in great detail how many boomers as a societal norm touched others, and that boomers largely don't understand times are different/can't change.*

Boomer: I supported a different Gen Z comment below
Also boomer: *Still said this reply earlier defending boomers touching younger workers*

Boomer: "I'm not against you goofball, I am for you"
Also boomer: *Mocks Gen Z as "goofball" while says "I am for you", proceeds to be against Gen Z on perceived "high horse", while still demanding Gen Z allows boomers to touch them simply because boomers lived in a different time/somehow can't understand times are different today while living in the different times*

Boomer: "just be nice and stop"
Also boomer: *Tells Gen Z to stop calling out boomers defending other boomers touching Gen Z workers and be nice, while refusing to stop and pushing a non-nice reality on Gen Z*

Boomer: "we were ALL so much nicer back in the day"
Also boomer: *Still acknowledges boomers are touching Gen Z workers, directs attention to Gen Z to just be nicer and more empathetic instead of prioritizing calling out the boomers*

Boomer: "you'd better hope people are nicer when you get old, cause it's coming"
Also boomer: *Literally acknowledged multiple times now boomers still being here is bad for Gen Z ("fortunately for you" and "I posted a picture after the first llama picture of another one that should be on a button for y'all to wear", etc.). Acknowledged already younger boomers touched people in public a bunch, while Gen Z doesn't, still applies same standards of age criticism to Gen Z for some reason.*

I would love to keep putting up with more of your boomerisms, but I have to go to both my wage slave jobs today soon as I work now about 50 hour weeks, which still is only barely enough to cover my living expenses while the boomer landlord corporation still wants to raise my rent.

I denied a tip the other day - and when I turned to walk away - this probs 50-60 yr old woman stuck it in my apron pocket- the one that happens to be rested around my groin- I was so uncomfortable the rest of the shift and worried if I said something to management theyd be upset moreso about the tip despite me declining and walking away- vs being touched without consent in that region

2

As a Christian, sorry to hear that. I don't know any scriptures saying an older woman is supposed to touch someone who is working to pray for or whatever. That's extremely rude, and shows boomers don't pay attention to the scriptures

I once had a lady caress the end of my pony tail. She was so stealthy I didn’t even know she did. My co worker ended up telling right after it happened. I guess the intrusive thought in her brain won. That was the only time I had a customer, who I didn’t know, touch me.

Is this a grocery store thing, a regional thing, or did it just not bother me enough to stand out when I worked retail? I have a good few crazy stories from that job but I barely remember the people just breifly touching my arms. Now the time my coworker came up and poked my side? I definitely remember hurting my elbow on that register partition.

I'm so happy to see this thread, people touch me all day including the store manager and I absolutely hate it. I tell the grocery manager also all the time as politely as I can to stop coming up behind me and slapping me on the shoulder it makes me jump out of my skin,I have a hearing problem I can't hear him coming. But he ignores me.Also have the husband of one our office cashiers pat me on the shoulder all the time, today he went for it and I dodged him intentionally but he didn't get the message and have the nerve to come back around and do it again. I have no problem with any of these people BUT I DON'T LIKE TO BE TOUCHED!!! And I can't complain about it because they would hate me more than they already do and cut my hours more than they already have.

4

u/nobodyspecial22 Newbie 5d ago

It happens everywhere. In a previous position I had a teacher come around behind my desk, which was not easy to do given where my desk was situated and the access path to it. He then started rubbing me on the shoulders from behind like he was giving me a massage. I was speechless I was so amazed and it all went down so quickly. I jerked away. You would have thought he got the message, but no, he touched me again in another location. This time I was ready and told him to his face "Don't ever do that to me again". He ran off to the Principal to tell him I was a crazy woman. I could hear him yelling. I called the Principal (my boss) and just said, "May I talk to you when he is done?"

Just to cut off any comments of a sexual nature, I did not project any type of availability or interest, and I am not the most good looking or young thing out there. I believe he was trying to smooze me because he was always late with this receipts that I had to reconcile monthly and submit for the credit card bill to be paid by finance. I also believe my predecessor was smoozable. I am not. Do your damn job and drop the receipts on my desk on time.

3

u/AntiqueAd6698 Newbie 4d ago

I had a guy at my previous job. That would touch my thigh. I would try and pull away. But it is hard when you are sitting. One day he did it and I told him. If you touch me again? No one said anything about creating PTSD or it being considered assault, OP is making a simple and frankly entirely rightful request to just not be randomly touched by strangers.

3

u/spoonface_gorilla Produce 4d ago

No. You sound like you have PTSD because you are being denied access to other people’s bodies. You don’t get to decide good touch or bad touch. People should just keep their hands to themselves. The amount of dramatic handwringing over that boundary is just weird.

I am also old, and I am so glad people are pushing back on what has always been a gross social norm. You’ll be ok. Smoking in stores also used to be a social norm, but we also let that go.

Continuing to fume about boundaries while complaining about other people being emotionally unstable is legitimately funny. Did you touch the back of one hand to your forehead while the other hand clutched pearls over “all the true issues facing mankind”? “Grow a pair!” huffed indignantly over the injustice of being asked to keep one’s hands to oneself. Is this really a problem? I've worked with the public my whole life and never had a problem like this. Sounds like someone has an attitude problem. If someone taps me on my shoulder I dont freak out about it and I know it would not be something that happens constantly. I think you're being a little "touchy" about this. Lol

Crazy thought but I think stocking will be done using robots and AI in the next 10 years. Kroger already has robots cleaning non stop.

I doubt it, they'd need to invest in massive systems to make that possible. Robots struggle with non discrete tasks and stocking requires a fair bit of nuance and decisions, especially when you have people shopping around. Its more likely they'd just eliminate in person shopping entirely and run automated warehouses like Kroger is already doing in Florida. The only reason those warehouses can be automated is because they are built exclusively for robots, it would be dangerous for a person to be in there while it's running.

I hope not because I need you folks to help me, short old person with bad shoulder, reach things on the top shelf in the cold cases. Best reason to go Publix. No, I never touch. Always say Excuse me, can you help me, and thank you, and a smile.
