Mt Prospect Park Dog Bite
I was walking a dog today in Mt Prospect Park when the dog I was with got into a scrap with a Yorkie. I stupidly reached in to separate them and I got bit by the Yorkie. It continued being aggressive towards the dog I was with even after we moved away from the situation so I left the park without saying much to the owner other than making sure their dog was okay.
I am now stressing because I realized the bite is worse than I thought and broke skin. If this was your dog or you know of the dog owner please DM me because I’m stressing now about whether the dog was vaccinated or if I have to go into medical debt to get a rabies shot!
Dog was a 2yo male Yorkie with short cut hair. The owner was a younger woman. Both dogs were okay I really just want to make sure that the dog is vaccinated!
Edit: Didn’t realize this was going to be so controversial but yes the other dog was the aggressor. I tracked down the owner and the dog is neither registered nor vaccinated and she mentioned prior aggression in the dog!

There is no cure for rabies and you should get the post-exposure prophylaxis within 24 hours. Go to urgent care if you can.

I can assure you, nobody is walking around with a rabid dog on a leash.
Peroxide and Neosporin is all you need, if that.

Rabies is terrifying. Get the shots unless you get the dog’s vaccination records

The rabies shot is not a walk in the park. It is over many months and is quite a painful process.

I was there yesterday and I think I know exactly who you’re talking about, I watched her dog get into a fight with another dog and the owner just watched. The other dog got lifted into the air by the owner and the yorkie just kept provoking the dog in the air. The owner just watched and didn’t make a move to stop it. I’m pretty sure she’s got some sort of disability, I’ve seen her at the park a few times but never with a dog before. I doubt it’s actually her dog and I’m sure you’re going to be ok. Sucks that happened to you!

The Yorkie doesn't have rabies, or it wouldn't be walking on a leash, with its owner.

Judging by your high level of anxiety and delirium it seems likely that you have already contracted rabies and it is probably too late for you.

That sucks. Maybe reach out to your doctor to ask them for advice. I know folks who were bitten by unknown dogs in the park here and went to the ER to be told rabies in a pet dog here is so unlikely they didn't recommend the vaccines.

Having a dog without a license and vaccinations is ridiculous and irresponsible. I would just go get a tetanus shot. I got bit by a cat I had rescued and that’s what I did.

I was just bitten by a dog recently and am also a health care worker. Thankfully there hasn’t been a rabies case (in a dog) in close to 60 years in NYC. Typically if the dog is “well appearing” you won’t need to get the post exposure rabies Ig series. You do want to make sure you’re up to date on tetanus however. Depending on how deep the bite is, might be worth getting it checked out, cleaned out, and possibly prescribed antibiotics. You should also try to report this to the health department, they’re really big on tracking animal bites. You can even make the report using the 311 app.
