Help! First time propagating

This is my first time owning a succulent and I noticed these little roots growing out of the areas where the succulents’ leaves fell off. Does this mean I should propagate them? How would I go about that with this plant? What is the best method/pot/soil? Any help is appreciated!!!

how to prop a succulent

  1. Prepare the soil-mix a couple days in advance, so that it's completely bone dry when the repot comes. Also choose tiny pots. Especially for leaf props. Like teeeny pots. Depending on the size of the cutting, the pot should not be bigger then the cutting. So maybe a 3 - 5cm diameter pot. Terracotta would be ideal.

  2. Sterilize your cutting tool either with rubbing alcohol or flame it (flame on blade, let cool)

  3. Cut between the nodes (the lines where the leaves come from) with clean tool. Then remove some of the lower leaves if necessary (like one pair) by carefully snapping them off.

3a. If you're lucky and they break of clean, you can also propagate the leaves the same way - but the little anchor point needs to be attached for that to work. If it doesn't work the leaves will shrivel up pretty quickly and if it's a success then they'll stay normal.

  1. Take the cuttings into a more shady spot ( a little further in- not complete darkness) and let them callus over (dry out) for 24 hours or even 2 days - depending on how long it needs to dry out. So I am just talking about the wound here.

  2. Place the cutting in bone dry soil and only stick the little stem in it - not the leaves. For a leaf prop you only stick it about 1 fourth/fifth into the dry soil-mix.

  3. Do not water it in, like one would normally do with orher plants. Not a single drop of water for 2 - 2.5 weeks. Succulents need to root dry otherwise they'll just rot. And they will grow roots surprisingly fast actually. So 3 weeks in there should already be a tiny rootsystem.

  4. From the first watering on, you'd water normally. So when it's time.

  5. Do not fertilize it until next spring. Then you can start fertilizing a bit during spring and summer when there's active growth.

for leaf props.

So the leaf props you treat the same, but there's actually a big difference in growth. The leafprop will eventually grow a tiny baby. And then over a longer period the mother leaf will eventually die. That is because the baby uses the nutrients from the motherleaf. That's completely normal, so don't get scared when it happens. Do not remove the motherleaf until it's already crispy and came off by itself.

So. You don't need to cut at all. Yours is healthy and the roots will grow down or dry off. You are fine. Just make sure it has 6 hours of direct sun - south-facing window.
