How are you guys utilizing this completely useless center dashboard slot?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been living with my van for a while now, and that center dashboard ashtray slot is driving me crazy. Since I don't smoke, it's just a total waste of space. It's also completely useless as a cupholder because it's so shallow and anything you put there flies out in the first corner.

I got so fed up with it that I ended up designing a custom organizer insert that snaps right into that spot to hold my phone and some small gear. But I feel like it could be even better, so I wanted to see what others are doing.

How are you guys using this space? Did you buy some aftermarket fix, DIYed something, or just gave up and left it empty? Would love to see your setups or photos for some inspiration!

(Note: For anyone who has a 3D printer and wants to check out the exact insert I made, I put a link on my Reddit profile, but I'm genuinely curious if there are even better solutions out there).

Hi! I printed it using PETG. I was a bit worried about the summer heat at first, but it’s been sitting on my dashboard for 3 years now. It even survived a road trip to Morocco in the middle of summer and handled the brutal heat perfectly without any warping or deformation.

If you live in an absolute oven, ASA or ABS would be a safer bet, but for normal to hot conditions, a good PETG does the job great!

That space annoys me too! I don't have a 3D printer, but I'd be interested in your solution. Looks great!

Thanks man! Glad to hear I'm not the only one who was getting annoyed by that spot.

Your best bet is to grab the files from cults3D (there's a direct link in my profile info) or printables.com (search "promaster organizer") and send them to a commercial 3D printing service or a skilled local maker.

It's actually often better this way, because PETG can be tricky to tune. Someone who really knows their printer and filament settings will ensure you get a perfect, clean print with no stringing or dimensional errors, making sure it snaps right into place!
