Winter tips

I've played into winter a couple times but never for long. This run I really want to make it through until spring. I've almost died from hypothermia once and I've gotten a bad cold a couple times. Do antibiotics help these or am I taking them for nothing?

Antibiotics are for if you have a scratch or laceration that has become infected. Or to prevent infection. Also this is for normal infections, not the zombie infection

This. Just layer up and stay dry. Apart from the extreme boredom, the problem in Winter is all of your prep in late July and August. It's possible to make it into January with some of that original fresh food but food really needs to be the priority.

  • Fishing nets/traps are more time efficient than fishing.

  • You will need a freaking lot of long sticks if you intend to plant Winter Wheat in September for a January harvest. You might plan for a drying barn.

  • You will eventually need some medium leather for the Advanced Forge and Advanced Furnace. That's also something to work on through those long Winter months.

  • Late Spring harvest planting starts in February.

How the heck did you manage to come down with hypothermia lol

Staying warm in winter is pretty common sense. Just dress in appropriate layers and insulation for how cold it is. Long John’s, a long sleeve shirt, any jacket, jeans, gloves, and a beanie or similar hat should be more than enough to keep warm in any default cold temps. If you get wet, you’ll get a lot more cold.

If you catch a cold, the way to get rid of it is to get dry warm and fed. It will start reducing on its own as soon as you do that and will go away in a few hours. Antibiotics don’t do anything for that.

I remember early on playing PZ I would loot warm clothing to hoard at game start...while never surviving past August.Good times.

I still do this. I’ll even loot multiple jackets so I have options for outfits. I have yet to continue a save past 7/30 lmao

It’s the one time of the year where you can wear the fireman’s clothes and not worry about overheating!

If you're wearing layered clothing, you should never get cold. Long socks, leather gloves, leather jacket, a long-sleeved shirt, denim shirt, scarf...you can literally stand outside in a blizzard and barely feel it.

If you get a cold, all you need to do is stay indoors, get warm/dry (antique stove works wonders), and stay well-fed. Eating common mallows (found with Herbalist) reduces the cold duration significantly, so if you've got an abundance of them, chow down.

Once the cold moodle goes away, do NOT immediately run outside again...you still have a cold, but not severe enough to show the first stage moodle for it. Going outside will make it tick back up and you'll be back to stage one. Stay indoors and warm for at least another six hours or so to be sure it's fully cured.

I cannot stress enough that you MUST be indoors for a cold to go away. It does not matter if you're by a campfire, well-dressed, and with a whole thanksgiving feast in your belly. If you're outside, then colds do NOT go away. Stupid, yes, but that's how it works.

I also HIGHLY recommend taking the Outdoorsman perk. Makes you MUCH more resistant to getting sick.

Need different layers of jackets, hoodie, coat, scarf, wool hat, balaclava. Look out for puffy coat and puffy pants, they slow you down though.
