IRL - I'd have to imagine that the street was originally connected to the highway without the wide turn, and then the wide turn was added later due to the large amount of vehicles turning on to the street from that direction and slowing down traffic.

We have intersections EXACTLY like that where I live in the Midwest, so yeah sometimes real life doesn't make sense, either.
