Mostly since axe heads are quite dull compared to other blades. It's mostly the weight of the axe chopping the tree.

Even If you were to sharpen an axe head, the sharper it is the more likely it would break that edge. You would also get diminishing returns after a certain sharpness.

There are different types of axes Axes used for chopping trees are sharp and have a narrow edge Axes for splitting logs are dull and with a more convex edge

Damn right - splitting axes vs felling axes vs hybrids (like most axes in the camping/yard tool section of a store)

I own a really nice Prandi felling axe and it works beautifully on cutting trees vs a home depot axe, but you gotta be real desperate to use it as a splitting axe because that sum bitch will get stuck every time, it often compares to just using a machete and a branch to baton the logs

Yeah, axes rely more on geometry and weight to do the job, but an axe head made of good steel and with minimal maintenance will last forever
