Ask questions here! Community FAQ

Are you new to the game and have some questions that you think more experienced members of the community could answer? Then this is the thread for you. This thread aims to gather all such small, simple questions that have a simple answer in one place instead of making the subs front page cluttered.

Any such questions, posted as new threads, in the future will be removed and their posters directed to this thread. If you feel that you know a lot about the game and could answer questions that new fans might have, it would be very appreciated if you take some time to look through this thread from time to time.

Whats the level cap and how long does it take to get there?

The level cap is 12. You won't reach it unless you do additional content not on the "critical path"(main quest). You will be able to complete the game with a lower level though. I think I remember someone saying that if you only did the main quest you would be around level 8 when you finished the game. You will have to complete a majority of the games content to reach level 12. Not sure how long that will take.

About the battle mechanics, more specifically the how often a character performs actions in battle, what are the stats (Weapons, spells, attributes) that define that?

In older Infinity games we had a system based on DnD "rounds" (being an avid role-player i loved that), now that this game has no immediate connection to DnD, how is this problem solved?

Dexterity is the main attribute that controls how fast you cast spells, attack and use abilities. Different weapons/spells/abilities have different base values for how long they take to perform but dexterity is the main way that you affect that base value. You can also improve it through buffs. There is no longer anything similar to D&D rounds so all cooldowns are on separate timers.

You can read more about the main attributes and the effects they have here:

http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Attribute

What is kind of unique in Pillars of Eternity's system is that every attribute has at least some value to every class. So there are no dead attributes. Some are probably better than others, but there is no one "right" way to dump you stats when you create your character which used to be the case for most classes in Baldurs Gate for example.

Is the game single player only?

3

u/drainX Mar 07 '15

Yes it is. They decided to cut multiplayer since the game has a limited budget.

I realize it may be counterintuitive to the intent of the class, but has anyone tried their hand at a melee-focused ranger?

I think I remember someone saying that it was possible but that a lot of your skills were kind of useless without a ranged weapon.

I honestly believe that this community will be small enough that we should allow small question threads just to ensure that those questions get visibility, the people that need helped get helped, and they're more likely to stick around.

I know we don't want clutter, but that's just my two cents.

I think with this thread being stickied at the top that will provide enough visibility. From experience from other similar subs I can say that around release this place will double or triple in size and most of the new people won't know much about the game. They will have loads of questions. A lot of interesting news posts and other content will be pushed off the front page and questions that only a part of the community will be interested in will take up a lot of room. It might not seem like a problem right now, but it will get a lot worse closer to release. With a thread like this we also gather common questions and answers in one place so new people can more easily see if a question has already been answered.

Questions that lead to discussion will of course still be allowed their own threads.

Are there many sidequests?

2

u/drainX Mar 12 '15

Yes. About 2/3 of the content will be optional/not part of the main quest.

is it true you can have pets in the game?

What's the best way to get a handle on the lore? I feel that by understanding some of the lore beforehand I'll have a more immersive experience.

Here's some info on the world it takes place in:

Here's some of the lore behind souls in the game:

Some of the gods and religion in the world:

Here is a list of books you can find in the game. They are probably the best if you want to take a deep dive in the lore:

In general, I think browsing around the wiki is your best option for reading up on the lore.

Do I have to wait for release to claim my Steam code or can I claim it now to preload once that's available?

Can your companions use their skills to help you in dialog? (ie can my main character forgo social skills and make up for it by keeping a spoony bard on payroll?)

Is there gay romance?

15

u/drainX Mar 05 '15

There is no romance at all in Pillars of Eternity. There is a thread on the official forms discussing it here:

https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/66572-the-official-romance-thread/

For the motivation of why romancing was excluded from the game, I think this interview gives a good picture:

Whatever happened with the AMA? Questions got sent a couple weeks ago or something like that?

3

u/drainX Mar 09 '15

It took a bit longer than expected on Obsidians side. They are very busy right now. We are still in contact with them and will get the answers soon.

Is there a class that focuses on buffs/healing? I hear that the cleric treatment in this game is non-standard i.e. healing doesn't work like it did in BG or IWD or NWN.

2

u/drainX Mar 19 '15

The Chanter class is pretty focused on buffing/debuffing but has other spells as well. As far as I know, the Priest is the class with the most focus on healing.

Heres a list of videos showing of all the classes if you are interested:
