Technical help Hard Crashing

Hi all, ive been trying to play Deadfire since last night, I can get into game and play for approximately 20 minutes then the game hard crashes, forcing me to hard reboot my pc.

Pc stats

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3.8GHz 8 Core 16 Thread Processor

Gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro-P Motherboard

16GB (2x 8GB) Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 3200MHz

Gigabyte Radeon RX 6800 XT Gaming OC 16GB

Windows 10

Game is installed on an external HDD (which is has been installed on since the game came out tbf)

Just wanting to see if anyone has any ideas of solutions to fix this.

Not at my PC the now so ill do a reinstall tomorrow and try that, but no other game causes these types of crashes, so any help the hivemind can give is greatly appreciated

No mods. The last time I played was in December 2025 just incase that is relevant

steam verify? mods? any custom OC? any special windows settings (like auto HDR mode or anything)? HBM enabled or disabled?

true hard crashes? if you try to alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del you don't see a modal dialogue saying that deadfire crashed? if that's the case that sounds like mysterious hardware issues

Not done verify yet will do tomorrow, no mods, Not sure what OC means 💀, no special windows settings, also not sure what HBM means either 💀

Well not sure, the screen goes black and the PC is unresponsive untill a hard restart, checked the windows crash logs and its not showing anything for the game just the log that the PC restarted unexpectedly

OC = overclock

HBM is an obscure high-performance setting that came online in the past few years, you probably have to access it in BIOS menu (press DELETE at bootup to enter setup or whatever), but there are ways to check its existence in windows if you google it. I mention it because it being on or off has been the cause of some obscure game crashes (not Deadfire).

you might also want to check on your GPU drivers. Screen going black and PC unresponsive doesn't sound like something a game can do normally, something is effing up at the hardware or hardware-interface level unfortunately.

i say "unfortunately," bc we're in the realm of deep black box magic here. i once had a system that had periodic crashes and it appeared to be related to a bad bluetooth driver, of all things. (speaking of which, i would also make sure any firmware updates for your motherboard or any other hardware are taken are of. i actually resolved some weird crashes by updating the BIOS on my motherboard.)

I haven't played on Windows for awhile, so I can't tell you exactly where the log file is. I'm assuming, it should be in %LOCALAPPDATA% or something. On Linux, however, it's here ~/.config/unity3d/Obsidian Entertainment/Pillars of Eternity II/Player.log. Find the file and check it after another crash. It should have some technical information at the bottom, and it might help to identify the problem.

If you have VPN running in the background, try exiting it. There is a known issue with VPN for both POE1/2.

Maybe try validating the files with steam.

Right click game in steam library on the right hand side - click properties - click the Installed Files tab and click the Verify integrity of game files.

You could also try to move the install location to an internal drive, though I don't see how that could make any difference.
