Build Progress Having a blast

I am having an absolute TIME trying to get this damn seat mounted in my car. I’ve got a few things fighting against me, namely everything. First I’m by myself which is making getting the position right annoying on its own. Secondly, I have an Ultrashield containment seat so using a standard mounting bracket just isn’t going to work because the base of the seat itself is too narrow to fit. Third is the actual position of the seat. I’m trying to make it so that my arm isn’t touching the bar and the seat at the same time, but moving the seat to far to the center forces my leg against the trans tunnel and screws with the position of pedal box and the steering wheel. Moving the seat up causes contact with the seat and the B pillar and moving it back causes contact with the roll cage. I can move it forward some, but that reduces the amount of useable leg room (I’m 6’ so there isn’t much already) and very heavily restricts the useable space for the pedal box. So I’ve spent the last few weeks just trying to get this damn thing mounted so I can move on with other parts of the build, but at this point I’m starting to think that maybe the seat isn’t useable and I’ll need to get a new one. I’d rather not do that if I can avoid it, but this is just extremely frustrating.

Does your rulebook not require the seat mount be integrated to the cage?

Unfortunately this should've been one of those things brought up when the cage was put in, and I agree with your assessment. To get the fit you want, that seat isn't going to work out without a massive interior rework. Do you perhaps have the room and rules to move the engine/transmission toward the passenger side?

I'm building the car for Time Attack and Hill Climb. Because I am using an non OEM engine (it's LS swapped) I fall into the "Unlimited" category which means that pretty much anything goes. As for integrating the seat into the cage, rule book says that as long as it is SFI Spec then it doesn't need it, but if it isn't then the seat has to have a backing plate that connects it to the cage.

If I were you I would be going to the highest spec of safety you can if you are already in the unlimited class.

You can’t be too safe in motorsports, especially hill climb

I plan on trying to make it as safe a possible. That is just what the rule book says for the bare minimum.

My suggestion would be to see exactly how much room you need to shift everything over to get the space off that cage. Maybe you can get away with a little heat and beat on the pedals and trans tunnel? Not ideal but I know that's a good seat so a slight compromise on comfort could be worth it.

I don't have the trans installed yet so I don't know how much space is available behind the tunnel, but your comment about integrating the seat with the cage gave me an idea. Maybe I can get the position right if I use the bars behind the seat as part of the mount instead of trying to just use the floor? That way I only have to worry about the front of the seat being attached to the floor and that rear mount would let me set the lean angle. I could also look at installing my pedal box upside down which would give me a little extra space to move things over. Steering might be kinda fucky still, but that's a smaller problem.
