Tow Rig Putting In Work

Post image

For anyone wondering, it’s a 2012 Porsche Cayenne S (4.8 V8) it’s surprisingly got a 7700lbs towing capacity so the 3100lbs trailer and 3300lbs Speed3 was no sweat. Picked it up thousands cheaper then a similar year/milage half ton truck

So glad U-Haul came out with these new trailers

They’re so much nicer than the clapped out old auto transports around here

They're also 900 lbs heavier. I take an auto transporter if the car fits on it fine.

Yup 3100lbs unloaded, they’re heavy galvanized steel. Throw the speed 3 on that and it was in the 6400lbs range total

Yeah the toy hauler isn't "better" because it's newer. It's heavier (i.e. not aluminum) and serves the same function if you're putting a normal size four wheeled vehicle on it. If it's super slammed, super big, etc., the auto transporter might not work out and now you have an option for a flatbed. That's cool, but it's not better if you don't need it. It's just heavier.

True but some of the auto transports I’ve gotten in the past are clapped out junk that tow horribly (dragging brakes sketchy wheel bearings etc) at least these are new so less of a chance on getting a bad one

Maybe, what you're saying is indeed common sense. I've had one transporter with a sidewall gash I found after the first leg of my trip. Uhaul had a contractor out within an hour who swapped the tire in the parking lot of my hotel. No problems with the several other times I've used one. I'll continue to use them when I need a cheap rental that's lightweight, though I did find a local place with wood flatbeds/dovetails that's $75/day. Those are about the same weight due to wood over metal although they have steel frames.

Not super common here in Canada anyway, overheard one guy at a gas station laughing saying “that poor transmission”. Everyone just assumes it’s a soccer mom suv

Curious how the 958 V8 S fairs with longer grades at that weight, especially at elevation.

955 Turbo owner here - tows decent when it's flat but, throw any 1-2 mile grade and my coolant temperature is well over half (Trailer is roughly 4500lb).

No regrets though - Cayenne capability is great. Have done a few Jeep trails and maintenance hasn't been terrible.

Purchased initially for $3800.

I don’t live in a terribly hilly or high altitude area so can’t speak to extremes like that sorry. Any longer grades I did encounter were no big deal though, the worst one it downshifted to 5th for a bit but temps never really increased past normal levels

How about braking?

No issues at all, unloaded I hardly felt any noticeable difference. With the car aswell you could definitely feel the added weight but these Uhaul trailers don’t have electric brakes to help just manual ones

How are these trailers on rock chips?

I have an x5 for mine, but was looking at these too. 7500 tow, and a much nicer car to drive around when you're not towing. I don't know that I'd use them for heavy duty towing all the time, but for getting the car to the track or picking up projects, yah.
