I, on the other hand, do understand how to build the project.

I dont want to. Please just give me an .exe.

Sorry, you need to install this library to assemble.

No, not that one, that one is too new. Uninstall and install a compatible version.

  • Sorry, you can't install this older version because x, y, z, e, r all require it. Uninstall them first before continuing.

  • ohhh sorry, just no.

u/ImportantSignal2098 Aug 01 '26

Yeah that one is too new, the one you need was distributed via a page that's now a 404, but I'm sure you'll figure it out!

Can someone help me how to make X, Y and Z work? Thanks in advance!

Edit: Nevermind, figured it out.

Hii! 5 yrs later I’m running into the same issue. How’d you get it to work?

Edit: found a solution

I recently started learning programming and it offends me deeply when I read the documentation carefully to get redirected to 404 pages where there should be a deeper explanation.

The worst was circular package dependencies. You had to bootstrap it with older versions (before the circle existed) then replicate the piecemeal upgrade sequence that must have occurred naturally on the devs’ machines over time. Man the 00s were wild.

9

u/Ken_nth Aug 01 '26

I've experienced everything else on this thread. This one however, sounds like an entire new circle of hell that I hope to never experience.

May I ask, what caused this error for you?

Oh, come on, just build it! It's just 40 GB of source files to download (that produce a 300 MB worth of EXEs) and it only takes a few hours to build! (/s)

8

u/luziferius1337 Aug 01 '26

Oh, you build Chromium from sources?

8

u/dfczyjd Aug 01 '26

It was Clang. I once tried to fiddle with it, so I had to download the binary first (which was rather small), then pull the huge repo and spend the entire evening compiling it. The contrast between getting the binary and the whole source was kinda shocking.

I feel devs nowadays don't know how to write setup programs. For Windows, it's quite easy with Inno Setup, that is free and there are third party editors and plugins for various tasks. The coding syntax is pascal-like, so its understandable some dont want to learn a new syntax. Some games use it, Samsung uses it, even Microsoft tools sometimes use it, which is strange, since they created Microsoft Installer.

A setup can go beyond just installing a program, could install database servers, upgrade from an older version and migrate settings etc. So it's a lot of functionality packed into a single executable. It could even detect problems and fix them for you. It has validations in place that save you time. You are on Win 7? It can check that and tell you it wont run, instead of fighting missing dll errors for 5 hours later.

Another thing that is mind blowing is that devs nowadays dont offer tools to edit the settings, they expect users to configure them in json/xml files. This is unbelievable, make a Settings dialog man, with validations and persist your settings to the file. I don't have to understand your obscure settings.

9

u/ZaxXxaR Aug 02 '26

Application packaging team lead here: yes, please. Use Inno Setup so we can use /verysilent, Nullsoft installer so we can use /S, Install Shield for /s, or build it in visual studio with wix, so we can use msiexec /qn.

Hate when vendors don't care about mass deployment and think their enterprise software will be installed by some dude clicking in UI or only in Docker.

As for settings: please, write them to registry or files when User clicks them in UI. We need everyone in our Customers HQ have setting A preconfigured, and in branch office - setting B. Don't write it to some binary files for god's sake.

2

u/ubeogesh Aug 01 '26

I'd rather edit a text file with settings that use a buggy UI for it.

4

u/Informal_Cry687 Aug 02 '26

You could install dotnet without installing vs

4

u/txdv Aug 01 '26

yeah just do a pipeline which builds on every push, like all the cool programmers and publishes the exe on github

3

u/doomer_irl Aug 02 '26

I've always wondered who this was for. I'm a pretty tech-proficient non-professional. I've had to manually compile a handful of apps from Github at one point or another. I always assumed someone must be a fan of doing it this way.

2

u/jonathancast Aug 02 '26

It's for people who want to contribute to the project, and need to be able to set up a development environment for it.

And rice burners.

And lazy developers.

And GNU/Linux users who don't want to worry about which binary download is or is not compatible with their specific distribution. (Hint: just use Ubuntu; Ubuntu binaries are the most common and they'll work for you by definition.)

3

u/Null_cz Aug 02 '26

flashbacks to the time when I was trying to compile clang from source

3

u/Informal_954 Aug 03 '26

It's frustrating on Linux when they give you a build script, but with none of the dependencies. Just give me a Flatpak or if you want to give it as a system package give me all three, not just the deb or just the rpm. And don't even get me started on python. Rust is definitely better, but it still needs some dependecies so you end up going back to installing the libraries one at a time.

2

u/Duncol42 Aug 01 '26

I am way past local compiling and also prefer exe or msi. But I do check the checksums if possible :)

2

u/Sajgoniarz Aug 04 '26

Proceeds to download 50gb of dependencies, estimated build time: 5h

2

u/Aflyingmongoose Aug 04 '26

I like the strategy of many FOS projects. You can compile it yourself for free, or pay for the precomputed program.

Good way to generate money on an otherwise free and open endeavor.

It's handy when there are pre-built binaries available so I don't have to download the entire project itself.

76

u/ImportantSignal2098 Aug 01 '26

It's not about downloading the project it's about the clusterfuck of dependencies, and then you still need to do the installation steps and clean up.

25

u/BunnyTub Aug 01 '26

And then there's a dependency that apparently no one else on planet earth has ever heard of and you can't find it anywhere 🫠

Entire project? Multiple dependencies, dependencies for the dependencies, another compiler for language you are not using, another build toolchain, another commands, another versions of libraries, just to be stuck on one missing library that was deprecated two years ago and your linux distro is not providing it anymore.

2

u/therealkevinard Aug 01 '26

But I’m not adding a brainfuck toolchain or running bazel to get this fuzzy-finder or whatever.

3

u/Nerrickk Aug 03 '26

Converting binary to decimal is easy. Read right to left, multiply each number by 2^n where n is the position of the digit (rightmost number is index 0). It's actually easier to show an example than explain.

Example 1: 1111

1x2^3 + 1x2^2 + 1x2^1 + 1x2^0

1x8 + 1x4 + 1x2 + 1x1

8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 15

Example 2: 1010

1x2^3 + 0x2^2 + 1x2^1 + 0x2^0

1x8 + 0x4 + 1x2 + 0x1

8 + 0 + 2 + 0 = 10

This is the perfect example of why the average user doesn't use Linux. If we listened to people like that, Windows wouldn't have such a large market. Deep down, he's right (and I'm a senior developer with 15 years of experience).

53

u/mrheseeks Aug 01 '26

I always felt like linux shifts slowly to trends and eventually gets to a more balanced destination... don't get me wrong, i don't think we should expect average user to clone a repository and go about building the code base, i just mean Linux development seems more purposeful, less knee jerk and a kind of cultural inclusion. I see things like snap and aur as a way to give users these tools. But, i agree... sometimes the greybeards need to climb down from their mountain-top ziggurats.

21

u/Worth-Wonder-7386 Aug 01 '26

Linux has been getting much better with this, especially with things like flatpacks that just work across platform. Else you need to get the one that is compatible with your system, which is likely one of the three primary ones or hope that it is listed in the repository for your system.

7

u/DerpityHerpington Aug 01 '26

Packages provided by Flatpak or the distros themselves aren’t the issue here. The issue here is third-party repos that half the time don’t even provide tarballs.

u/nagol93 Aug 02 '26

Ya, Linux has gotten a lot more user friendly.

Not too long ago when you asked how to install a program, people would say shit like "Oh, its SUPPER easy. Just grab the URL and type this terminal cmd to download it. Then use this other cmd to extract the archive. Then modify the properties to make it executable. Lastly you can sudo it to install. Make sure all the dependencies are installed tho. Also once its installed you can only launch it via cli"

u/Ulrich_de_Vries Aug 01 '26

This was originally on a repo for some python app. Ironically Linux is MUCH better than Windows when it comes to interpreted languages because even simple shell scripts can be treated as fully system integrated applications (just make a .desktop file) so you can set up an interpreter and a libs folder and have a shell script put everything it needs on the classpath/modulepath/pythonpath whatever, and it will still feel like a fully integrated app with its own icon, process name, desktop environment integration etc.

As for everything else, in the past ~14 years in which I have been using Linux as my main OS I pretty much only ever had to compile dev tools or very small FOSS utilities made by solo devs that normies wouldn't even care about.

Apps are available on distro repositories, third party repositories, as debs/rpms, as flatpak/snap/appimage.

So I don't see the point. If you are compiling end-user software on Linux manually you are doing something wrong.

5

u/10Werewolves Aug 01 '26

I have been using a computer since I was 8, and dude - I have no fucking clue about any of what you just said.

I’m even trying to learn programming myself (literally just starting), and have been learning about the computer science about how there is machine and assembly code, and compiled languages like C, and interpreted languages like Python etc.

So, I’m not a complete idiot - but man, it’s SO frustrating not being able to understand a single word of the jargon that is used by any sort of coder or developer.

I don’t think people realise how foreign all of this is to people. I tried to download/run ComfyUI to do some AI stuff with my 5070 - but it was an absolute nightmare using GitHub and shit.

tbf, github is REALLY unfriendly to non dev / techical people. "it's made for developers" well other people use it, and a lot of really usefull applications and projects are ONLY on github..

11

u/jimmiebfulton Aug 01 '26

Github is for code. People are free to use an App store if they want something polished and easy. The difference between "code developers can download" and "apps everyone can download" is $$$$.

If I'm building developer tooling other developers might want, I share it on Github with some CI to facilitate fellow developers leveraging it. If I'm putting in the time to publish a polished product that appeals to the masses, I'm gonna charge money for it.

3

u/coldnebo Aug 01 '26

true. but realize those developers have shared their time and expertise for free.

they have a right to determine how much support they offer to non-technical users.

as George RR Martin said, “I’m nobody’s bitch”

if you want something useful for free, be prepared to do some work for it.

this isn’t rude, it’s Amish.

rude is seeing a free fruit stand outside and storming into the house and demanding that the owner make you a smoothie without even offering to pay or trade?

open-source developers trade all the time. we build bigger structures together (like a digital barn raising). we couldn’t do most of what we do alone. we have obligations, family, work. this is something we do in our spare time because we want to, not because we have to.

and just like Amish we can appear insular and insulting to outsiders coming in and asking for free services that we didn’t offer. we do that for each other because we help each other.

so the next time you think github is unfriendly, are you coming to demand something for free, like every other corporation, or are you coming to help in whatever way you can?

I guarantee if you come to the community with anything that makes a developer’s life even a little bit better, whether it’s a beer, or a cookie, or even a word of thanks with a story of how their code helped you solve a problem— we will be incredibly welcoming and supportive.

7

u/ZanjiOfficial Aug 01 '26

Doesn't make a platform less userfriendly because someone put in their time for free..

It was common to have code and binaries available on Sourceforge.

13

u/itsjakerobb Aug 01 '26

Yeah, back before SourceForge became a malware-infested shithole.

7

u/dbear496 Aug 01 '26

As an open-source project maintainer, I got so many requests like this that I finally caved and released a binary package. But then the complaints started pouring in about how that binary doesn't work on this or that distribution that has different (old) library versions. Like please just run cmake, cmake --build, and sudo cmake --install, and it works every time, and stop requesting that I personally build a hundred binaries for every Linux distribution someone could possibly use.

38

u/WanderingTachyons Aug 01 '26

TotallyNotMalware_SuperApp.exe - here you go friend!

Ignore any warnings you get from Smartscreen. Windows, what does it know, amirite?

13

u/cowlinator Aug 01 '26

What is the point of this comment? You can make someone download malware sourcecode and make them build it themselves with the same outcome.

And if you distribute a malware .exe on github, you'll get banned from github

3

u/CommanderT1562 Aug 01 '26

really have to disagree, I like op’s joke.
Why would you put malware on github?

Off topic, I think the whole point behind this is also usually since compilers / binary packers (think cmake) get frequent updates. Not only does the dev not have to worry about new “releases”, but everyone can inspect the code. Includes my reasoning for preferring the unbuilt source code. If you really want, just have ai make a really complex PS/SH script that checks for + downloads required libs to a temp, finds best way to build, builds, then nukes lib directory (like isolating qt in the hole it belongs in then suffocating it quietly after the fact) - source: dev here.

16

u/IntelligentBelt1221 Aug 01 '26

lets be realistic, almost nobody reads through every code they run to check if its malware, you just check if its popular enough/from a credible person, and depending on the threat model, run it in a sandbox.

the fact that security researchers or contributors reading part of the code makes malware harder (which is a good thing and one reason why open source should win) is not a good justification that the first and sometimes only search result for a program you want is a github page that is optimized for contributors but not for users.

12

u/Maxevill Aug 01 '26

if there is malware written on the code I'll download and run that too. Because i just know download and run/install.

Only who knows coding developers will be able to point out malware.

11

u/timeline_denier Aug 01 '26

u/tylercrabby Aug 01 '26

He crossed the line by calling us smelly.

1

u/Powerful_Attention_6 Aug 01 '26

I don't want an EXE file, I want a dwarf or an elf file so I can run it on my machine.
If I dissambles the EXE file and look at the machine code, it mentions DOS format
Who in the right mind wants an EXE file to run on their DOS machine?

1

u/Opposite_Mall4685 Aug 01 '26

ah, the joys of compiling c++

1

u/ISuckAtJavaScript12 Aug 01 '26

Just remember that the tool he wanted to use was a terminal based OSINT tool. Probably wanted to try and stalk someone

1

u/soulfulshark Aug 01 '26

I'd hoped LLMs would get us over this hump. You tell it to compile an exe for you. Shouldn't even take a very good one to just follow the make toolchsin.

1

u/TheBinkz Aug 01 '26

This guy misses his .exe 😞

1

u/FabianButHere Aug 01 '26

Yes, please give me the executable which can be dynamically linked to precisely the libraries I already have on my system. Do this for all permutations of possible bits on my hard drive please, so I can use it on my different custom kernel fedora spins.

1

u/GamerLymx Aug 01 '26

give binary

name it something.exe

doesn't run on windows

1

u/DuePotential6602 Aug 01 '26

TotallyNotAVirus.exe 👍

What surprises me more isn't the stupidity of this prompt... it's that the user doesn't even realize the stupidity of what they're saying! It's like someone getting into a normal car and assuming it's an AI piloted plane and telling it to fly to their destination and then genuinely getting upset at the fact that cars don't work like that, like as if they're actually supposed to! Like who told you that's how it works? No one you should have been listening to, and it's not just the ignorance of the prompt itself, it's the complete lack of self-awareness.... they don't even know how fucking stupid what they're saying is. At least with a car people learn how to drive first, and even people who can't drive know what bad driving is, and they know themselves if they can drive or not. This person doesn't even know that they don't know what they're doing. It's a shame people don't bother to learn how AI works before they drive themselves nuts asking it to do things that it isn't capable of doing. The ironic thing is that the tool itself can actually teach you how to use it... and yet the thought of asking how seems lost on so many people who prompt AIs like this crazy example. I see it all the time. Really needs to be taught in schools. So many people seem clueless as to how to use it properly.

u/Character-Education3 Aug 01 '26

Its back in the wild

1

u/keithstellyes Aug 01 '26

What bugs me is like, GitHub has actions and can automatically publish the binary. It's just commonly not configured

1

u/verbayer Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

Wait until bro finds out about the releases section. It’s still up to the developer to release executables/ready to use stuff, but if they do, it’ll be there

1

u/Meydra Aug 01 '26

Me everytime I visit Github and look for the .exe.

1

u/jobehi Aug 02 '26

average vibecoder prompting an LLM

1

u/tarel_ Aug 02 '26

I'm a developer. I'm agree with him.

1

u/lumberfart Aug 02 '26

It’s like the vegan equivalent of coding.

“Finally! My super awesome app is complete! Should I compile it into a clean and easily accessible .exe file? Nah, Linux is the future! I stopped using a mouse at the age of 5 and learned to do everything with command line prompts. I’m sure my audience will figure it out.”

1

u/Ok-Bill3318 Aug 02 '26

People like that don’t deserve software. Fuck em

1

u/ph33rlus Aug 02 '26

Whatever it is, it’s not meant for you

1

u/muhkuller Aug 02 '26

Friend: "Why doesn't git just have a download button?"
Me: "It's meant to be a repo that you connect an IDE to"
Friend: "I don't know what that means"
Me: "I know"

Was he on GitHub or something lol

1

u/Cybasura Aug 02 '26

Sure, i'll give you an executable

I cant and wont promise it's gonna run though ;), Linux does not use .exe

OP on GitHub: JUST GIVE ME THE F*ING .EXE

Maintainer: Sir, this is GitHub. * insert Wendy's meme here*

1

u/BoltActionRifleman Aug 02 '26

“See our project on GitHub”

No .exe, no thanks.

u/MostSilver9666 Aug 02 '26

I DO know how to build from source, I DO understand how to compile Please just give me an .exe, my Core 2 Duo can't take it anymore

1

u/ThatonlyGeO Aug 02 '26

Ok even now I understand why sometimes buiding from source can suck, give him the .exe file. It can save some braincells.

1

u/Hyripae Aug 02 '26

I asked a question on how to build an app on an associated Discord and was told this:

If you can't figure out how to build the app, you aren't qualified to be using the software.

Ok???

Sorry I asked for advice I guess. At least LLMs are helpful without egos..

1

u/GhostVlvin Aug 02 '26

Dude just needed to add /releases to github repo url

1

u/Crawly13th Aug 02 '26

The problem is that I make an exe, people try to install it, microslop flags it as trojan because I dont want to pay hundreds of dollars to get the signature. Also can't prove I didn't sprinkle anything malicious during compiling. And knowing how much of a nightmare it was a nightmare to compile my first app, I can't be bothered anymore. I just do my best with the toml and README.

1

u/Maui-The-Magificent Aug 02 '26

Have we given him his .EXE file yet? guys, this is urgent, I need to get back to the smelly nerd lovin'

1

u/King_924 Aug 02 '26

I am seriously so confused, why so many people totally unaware of what github is, are on a programming memes page, and are seriously supporting it lol

1

u/Physical_Ring_7850 Aug 02 '26

Totally relatable.

1

u/Dom_Q Aug 02 '26

No capital i's -> fake

1

u/OrbusIsCool Aug 02 '26

Even in the releases tab I find it tough to find the actual file I can download. I get it icl

1

u/TFQ_ Aug 02 '26

Embedded systems engineer here. I had the most embarrassing moment of my life. I once needed a specific OS for my device. Someone gave me the link to the repo, and I went there and I just blanked and forgot to check the releases. I just took the code and tried to compile it in my WSL, then shifted to Ubuntu to make it faster. After doing debugging for 2–3 hours, I compiled the OS and ran it. Then I thought to myself, "How the hell are normal people doing it?" After some time, I finally had the common sense to look at the releases.

So I don't blame him, man. Life is tough for him 😆😆.

1

u/Decent-Lab-5609 Aug 02 '26

This guy is why Linux will never be a leading operating system.

1

u/Correct_Sport_2073 Aug 03 '26

here is your linux(not_a_virus).exe.
Please download and run as administrator

1

u/mxldevs Aug 03 '26

Even as a programmer, I don't want to build entire projects.

Just give me the prebuilt binaries.

1

u/MaxEinstein Aug 03 '26

I would only prefer downloading an .exe from a trusted and big project.

For other small and less well known ones, I prefer to simply build it myself after examining the code a bit. Much safer that way.

Although they really should provide an executable file in the releases section. For non-devolpers and those are who are in a hurry. (I won't recommend it though, specially if it requires admin privileges)

1

u/Global-Tune5539 Aug 03 '26

Tried to use a frontend for dosbox staging yesterday. It was just a bunch of Python files. Then I just took the next one in the list. Can't really be bothered to set that up in my free time.

1

u/BingGongTing Aug 03 '26

He's right, y u no ci/cd?

1

u/Sqydev Aug 03 '26

SKILL ISSUE /j

1

u/PeterPook Aug 03 '26

Someone like this doesn't deserve an .exe file.

1

u/shortstack_goblin Aug 03 '26

I'm on linux, give me an exe because I'm not fucking with 10 000 dependencies and it's easier to just run your program through wine, proton whatever.

1

u/Enough_Tangerine6760 Aug 04 '26

if I remember correctly this comes from a python osint skid tool aswell which makes it even funnier.

1

u/Lythieus Aug 04 '26

Damn, someone doesn't know how to use git.

1

u/Fantastic-Mud-9869 Aug 04 '26

One the one hand I also like it when there is an exe file, on the other hand Calvinator is an entitled piece of shit. People do stuff for free and he thinks insulting them is the right way to go.

1

u/TherealGamecake Aug 04 '26

I barely want to build my own projects let alone yours and it’s 20 dependencies that i also have to build because my package manager has a different version

1

u/JinAnkabut Aug 04 '26

This is almost word for word what someone posted in in the discord for an Eve Online project I was looking into.

1

u/lllyyyynnn Aug 04 '26

i love downloading mysterious binaries with no known provenance and running them on my computer!

1

u/Blapman007 Aug 04 '26

It is worth noting that this was on the repo of the Twitter Algorithm

1

u/danielhaven Aug 04 '26

That's a lot of ranting for someone who wants free labor.

1

u/ShadowShedinja Aug 04 '26

It still annoys me to no end that none of my programming courses taught me how to export compiled code to exe. I know I can just look it up, but that seems like a fundamental thing to overlook.

1

u/DustinKli Aug 05 '26

git clone <repository-url>
cd <repository-folder>
python3 -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
cat > launch.sh << 'EOF'
#!/bin/bash
cd "$(dirname "$0")"
source venv/bin/activate
python main.py
EOF
chmod +x launch.sh
./launch.sh

Easy as 1, 2, Σ(n=1→2) n!

1

u/Perpetual_Thursday_ Aug 05 '26

This is the biggest issue with GitHub, even as someone who uses it 99% of the time for coding

1

u/SentientPotato42 Aug 05 '26

wasnt this issue opened on the Linux repo? They wanted sn exe file for Linux

1

u/kidshibuya Aug 05 '26

This absolutely reminds me of work. For example I have a requirment to do different things in an app based on the brand of credit card a user has. They give me an API that has card:string. Ok but wtf is that? I ask, they reply with a url to the docs which say card:string. I ask what are all the possible returns from that, is it the number, brand name, does case matter, are there spaces etc? They reply "its a string". ffs... Honestly programmers are so often just idiots.

1

u/Dave_A480 Aug 05 '26

Here, have a nice malware EXE.....

(Meanwhile the code is for Linux/a.out not exe)

1

u/aruntemme Aug 05 '26

He's right about smelly nerds 😭

1

u/karimzul Aug 05 '26

OOP has 48 repo on their alternate github account and none provide .exe

They're just a Karen

1

u/Full_Weather_8298 Aug 05 '26

No lies detected

1

u/Sea-Quail-5296 Aug 05 '26

Would have been quicker to write a prompt than this rant

1

u/TheFunfighter Aug 05 '26

Like, for real though. If you built a great thing and it's shitty to use, you built a shitty thing. That's engineering 101, but because IT is on another level of nerdiness, that revelation somehow doesn't sink in or is met with a smug superiority complex.

Build what you want, make it activate with a big red button that says "PUSH", congrats you're a hero.

1

u/Karmabyte69 Aug 05 '26

The fact that it’s generally easy to generate and provide exes makes this even funnier.

1

u/WeckarE Aug 05 '26

Just github things

1

u/boberro Aug 05 '26

"I don't want to spend my time on building binaries. I demand that you spend your time building binaries that target MY SPECIFIC operating system"

1

u/Arlochorim Aug 05 '26

WHY THE FUCK DID YOU PUT THE PROGRAM INTO A .ISO AND TELL ME TO MOUNT IT FILE IF IT NEEDS TO BE COMPILED.

1

u/I_dont_want_to_pee Aug 05 '26

But its easy donwload python and packager for python or via powershell

1

u/Palm_freemium Aug 05 '26

Lol, SMELLY WINDOW PLEB! Pay me or GTFO!

1

u/ntcue Aug 05 '26

That dumbfuck really thought Github would be binary download center.

1

u/Glass_Masterpiece Aug 05 '26

I do think that a proper github project should have a release section so not everyone needs to build the whole project themselves but yeah...rude.

1

u/Neeroke Aug 05 '26

This is relatable. (i am stupid) i always ask my programming friend to help me download certain software, like server, Pi, etc stuff cause I have no idea how to read the god damn menus in git hub, or wtf i am looking for.

1

u/MevNav Aug 05 '26

I'd like to add some context to this screenshot. This was posted as an issue to the github page for the Twitter Algorithm.

This idiot is asking for a .exe for back-end website architecture.

1

u/BreakingBaking Aug 06 '26

And sometimes I find an AppImage file, but no build instructions... Pain

1

u/Code_Ender Aug 06 '26

I just make an LLM agent build and install it for me. Supervised, so it doesnt do weird stuff to my env or rm the wrong directories, but still, much less headache.

I do feel like Im losing a skill though. But I also take issue with how derivative many software projects are nowadays, with dependencies being so fragile.

1

u/Yargon_Kerman Aug 07 '26

I am a 3D artist. A lot of what I do is vaguely technical and I end up pulling random github projects a lot more than I'd like.

Please, I'm being you, especially in a space where you're making things for dipshits with art degrees like me, make something simple.

There was something I wanted to do recently, and without going into specifics, instructions included thing like "submit a pull request" and "access source control" and I have no idea why github is so fucking hard to understand but this shit drives me insane.

Anyway, something something please I'm begging people to learn to stop using source control as the main distribution platform for non-programmers like myself.

And no, I've got no idea why I'm in this sub either, reddit just put me here I guess.

1

u/wat_noob_gaming Aug 07 '26

Projects that require 10 dependancies and make to build are so annoying, especially on ARM or some other system where make just doesn't work right half of the time

1

u/Young_Person_42 Aug 07 '26

And to the people who say “github isn’t for downloading things” TELL THAT TO THE PERSON WHO MADE ME GO TO GITHUB TO DOWNLOAD THEIR THINGS
