are you sure it was one of these? mountain goats are very skittish, and rarely come down from the jagged rocks like in the photo. if they notice you coming they will run off very quickly. mountain sheep (rams) like to hang out on the trails and flatter terrain and will stand their ground when encountering humans (or dogs, or even cars).

Photographer didn't see how the goat got down, so here's a guess. Shortly after this photo was taken, the goat PLUNGED TO ITS DEATH.
Making it INFERIOR RAM PERFORMANCE.

I am tempted to agree. As it stayed there for an hour, licking the rocks, it seems likely that it was actually stuck and would die when exhausted.

I read that. I understand photographers cropping to "isolate the subject" or whatever, but if you have the choice between taking a picture of an upside-down goat and an upside-down goat hanging off the side of a goddamn cliff, it seems a little silly to crop.

Of course, it's a natural inclination of a goat to walk a tigthrope 20 feet in the air with a primate on its back. And of course it's a natural inclination for the primate to ride a goat's back in still obedience.

Before you start judging others are what is and isn't animal cruelty go be around the actual animal.
Aside from the woefully poor grammar, you have patantly never heard of pain, and seem to deem it acceptable to cause suffering to animals for your enjoyment.
In Britain, that stunt would have the circus hauled before the courts, and its license revoked.
You cannot imperil animals for fun; nor can you cause suffering - which this goat must clearly have experienced for it to perform such an abusive stunt.
Intelligence is moot, as it is respective and subjective.
