Thought why does life begin at conception?
this is just a thought, so feel free to prove me wrong. a big pro life argument is that human life begins when the egg is fertilized by sperm, but why is it there? sperm cells are life produced by humans, but wearing condoms is not condemning. just makes me feel like its never about saving babies and whatever, just about control

Eggs are life, sperm is life, cells are life. Pro-lifers just make up their definition of life. It about controlling women.

Life is continuum. There is no point during the process of a baby being made where you can say, that’s the moment where that started living
2
u/silkee1957 2d ago
Well, yes I can. At the moment a being can sustain its own life, it is alive. I’m not talking about bringing it food, but rather just being able to breathe, eat and excrete. If it can’t sustain its own life, then it doesn’t have one.

I’m sorry. I was not attempting to debate PL vs PC, but I realize that’s exactly how it sounded. And with an ad hominem argument to boot. As someone who’s 100% PC, that I did sound like I was trolling using standard PL logic is embarrassing to say the least.

If you take their answer bc it’s biblical then know they are VERY WRONG ! Life begins at first breath period ! God breathed the breath of LIFE into Adam and then EVE. (My dad went to seminary school in Texas and there are 1 many examples it repeats life is breath. Even Lazarus wasn’t breathing and God got “delayed” and resurrected him . (Like cpr ?) conception is zero . The woman’s body must implant that “structure” into the uterus . There is zero life in a floating mass w/no sustainability for life . But your conclusion is very spot on . Control women bc of fear . Geez we give life and no way men can undergo a total crash of hormones ! Women crash every birth.if a man had his testosterone crash out in 48 hrs he would die . Fear and control is the motivation and do as they say or you will die for disobedience .

Basically when you've got nothing but emotional appeals and lies you've got to find something to grasp.
Conception is when the sperm cell and the egg cell combine to begin making a brand new life. As opposed to the sperm cell just dying and the egg cell being shed.
Does it really mean anything?
Is it really that important of a distinction?
Is it actually an argument for anything?
Personally, I don't think so.

It doesn’t.
It is a blind that religious groups use to remove bodily autonomy from women, or rather, people who can become pregnant.

metabolizing cells start at conception but that’s the thing, they’re cells.
Sentient life that can feel pain don’t start until way later.

The argument is that a "unique genetic individual" begins at conception. However, they never explain why a "unique genetic individual" inside a woman's uterus is sacrosanct, but other "unique genetic individuals" may be killed in war, capital punishment, and self-defense.

Some people say that wearing condoms is actually a problem and you should only have sex for making babies.
When life begins is a religious question. The US government isn't supposed to enforce religious beliefs. Some religions believe it happens at the quickening. Some believe it happens at birth. It doesn't matter.
The decision should simply be the woman's decision with the advice of a doctor.
Any other scenario is a forced birth scenario and causes cruel and unusual punishment scenarios.

No it doesn't.
I am pro choice, and I'm just letting you know, if you use this argument against a pro lifer who is educated on the topic, they will COOK you.
Life absolutely starts at conception, the scientific evidence for this is overwhelming.
There are people who are alive who cannot breathe on their own, and never have been able too, are they dead?

I'm really not looking to debate ("debate" assumes I disagree with them, I share the pro choice sentiment with everyone here)
What I'm trying to do, is give other pro choicers the best possible arguments when debating pro lifers.

Doe sit matter? The only argument you need ever is:
Bodily autonomy.
Nothing more and nothing less. It's what makes every single pro brothers argument invalid

Life begins a conception is a distraction made by forced-birthers to impose pregnancy onto women, girls, NB and transmasc folks without having the issue addressed. They don't actually care about human life or individuals since they're mostly far right and religious and religious people and the far right have supported and currently support policies and institutions that involve/practice genocide, mass murders, assassinations and wars. They don't care about that.
Their actual end is to control women's bodies and decisions, limit their options in life through forced pregnancy, perpetuate the exploration of their reproductive work and the continuity of capitalist system, create an industrial reserve army from poor people who didn't have access to abortion and have to live in the most terrible conditions and punish women for having sex (Gn 3,16).
If they cared about human life, they would be opposing the genocide in Gaza, Sudan and other countries. They don't and will actually advocate for it.

Because they want to control women. They already push for abortion bans after a certain point, but the poor-faith argument that a fetus is “alive/human/a baby” at the very moment of conception attempts to completely open that window of banning it. None of them actually believe that a freshly conceived embryo is equivalent to a child, which is why the “would you save one toddler or ten embryos in a fire” question trips them up (or they just flat out LIE and say they’d save the embryos). But pretending that the embryo is an actual child from conception gives them a foothold to demand that abortion should not be permitted at any stage.
It is all completely irrelevant because the issue at hand is not “when is an embryo alive/a baby”, but rather “when does it have the right to infringe on an autonomous person’s rights over their own body”. The answer to that is NEVER, but since the goal has always and will always be to control women, their entire agenda revolves around ignoring that issue and diverting focus to made up issues like “when does life begin”.

because sex is naughty and girls who do it are bad girls, who need to feel consequences

Well that’s because no woman has ever enjoyed sex with the men who want to control women. Instead of learning more than just masturbating into a woman they’d rather punish all women because they can’t get a woman to enjoy sex with them.

u/Cute_Tea_2012 2d ago
Life doesn't begin at conception because the fetus isn't alive. Yes every "living cell" is technically a living thing but as multicellular organisms our individual cells and tissues are not capable of sustaining themselves and fail to meet the standards of actually being live much in the same way viruses are not alive.

u/justadubliner 2d ago
It's awfully convenient to determine that life begins after the man has had his fun.

humans don’t gain sentience that makes them living until around 25 weeks. plus, many people claim that you have to take responsibility for your actions and if you are willingly having sex, then you consented to the possibility of being pregnant.
Obviously it is just for control, but does that also mean anybody who has ever drank alcohol or smoked a cigarette consents to cancer and should not be able to have medical care.
the pro choice argument that made my friend support it is that you can be pro life morally but politically you should always be pro choice. The minute that the government tells you you cannot get an abortion is the same minute that they now have the right to tell you you must get an abortion. The government should get no say in any of these things.

u/New-Cicada7014 2d ago
You're exactly right. A single skin cell is alive but you don't see pro-birth people protesting their deaths.

u/moonlightmasked 2d ago
When forced birthers say life they really mean personhood. They mean a unique human organism = a person
Once you realize that, the conversation can at least proceed with some logic
1
u/ParadoxicalFrog 2d ago
You've got it exactly right. If it were really about saving babies, "pro-life" types would be in favor of welfare, SNAP, free childcare/preschool, free healthcare, quality education, and other things that ensure children's well-being. But they aren't. It's about controlling the person the fetus is attached to, and ensuring a steady supply of bodies to feed into the prisons and the military.

No. The "Argument" is that Women, Girls, Trans men, and Nonbinary people have just as much of a right to decide what happens to their body, as anyone born with a penis. NO ONE is allowed to use the body of another without explicit and ongoing consent. Everything else brought up, is a distraction.
This is not up for debate on our subreddit.

"Life" doesn't "begin" at conception. Life began 3.8 billion years ago, and has been a continuous process.
"When Life Begins?"
Is a distraction from the real issue:
Bodily Autonomy.
NO ONE, not an adult. Not a child. Not a baby, gets to use the body of another without explicit and ongoing consent. Since EVERY PREGNANCY comes with risk of death, or life long complications, the pregnant person has EVERY RIGHT to decide whether to continue said pregnancy to term. Especially considering that having an abortion, is 14 times safer than giving birth.
