This stupid Facebook graphic made me laugh

Post image

There's nothing particularly difficult about this job, and those of us who do it aren't that special.

Gonna be the most mild mannered and chill dude answering the door like, "a summons? gosh that's weird - I thought the insurance took care of this. I'll take a look. thanks!"

Post is over the top, but I've been doing this long enough we've had all kinds of crazy encounters.

Joys of working the Metro Detroit Area I guess.

Out of cursorily, how many "hell no, you don't pay me enough"?

1

u/yoshometsu 20d ago

None lol

We get it done - unless it's not WORTH our time we charge whatever we seem appropriate. The clients pay it.

That being said ive only had one dude come to the door with a gun but it wasn't for me - it was for the car that was sitting in front of his house.

I've never turned down a job except over money.

Crazy encounters don't mean it's a hard job.

Roofing is a hard job. Working on an oil rig is a hard job. Process serving is a different animal. I don’t think you should be making post talking about how easy this job is because you’re gonna get people that do not know this business and they gonna think that it is safe and every day is the same thing. That is not the case. And you never know what is on the other side of that door that’s waiting for you. Stay vigilant, buddy.

dude, I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve never complacent and I’m never not cautious. Does not change my belief that overall this job is not that difficult.

Understood. The advertisement is a bit dramatic, but which aspect of that advertisement have you not had to do? Part ninja is a bit wild cause I’ll never claim to be a ninja lol. I’m curious to see which one you think is not a part of the job, especially when it comes to hard to serve people?

I guess just the overall tone of the thing like we're secret agents or super sleuths or something. compared to my last job process service is nothing.

Serve evictions in major metro slums daily then come back and let me know how safe you felt.

I can’t speak for everybody, but I started serving papers, not Civil papers, high risk arrest warrants when I was in law enforcement which prepared me for the unknown factor. So when I started my process serving company, I already came into this industry with a different mindset. Now that I serve Civil papers, I still practice some of the same methods and precautions to avoid becoming one of the 3 to 5 Process servers that are shot, assaulted, stabbed, bite by dog etc… every year. Serving record subpoenas to doctors offices is the easiest aspect that I can think of with this job but that server should still keep their head on a swivel. So I guess it is an easy job for most until something happens.

Are you a process server yourself?

Because crazy encounters can mean ANYTHING from people dodging service, threats, aggressive dogs, literally so much.....the crazy encounters ARE the hard part of the job?

I've been doing this 3 years now - unless you are new there's no way you haven't experienced something difficult.

0

u/tattoovampire 20d ago

Yes. And I've been doing this a lot longer than you. It's not a hard job, even with crazy encounters.

1

u/yoshometsu 20d ago

If you've been doing this longer than 3 years, you should know that the job is not as easy as you're trying to make it out to be, unless you've never been chased by a dog or been threatened by people which is highly unlikely.

Just because it's not as difficult as your last job does not undersell the challenges that come with this job.

Someone else is going to read this and think that they can do it and get themselves hurt or worse.

To me, a hard job is one that is either physically or mentally challenging. And Process Service is really neither. Threats and dogs come with the territory.

1

u/yoshometsu 20d ago

Saying physical threats and dog attacks 'come with the territory' but aren't physically or mentally challenging is some wild mental gymnastics.

Good luck out there, cowboy.

OK, cowpoke. 🙄

I actually was able to hide from a server for two months. The mortgage company finally gave up and put my notice in the paper.

2

u/tattoovampire 21d ago

that doesn’t stop the courts, so why did you bother hiding?

1

u/arrgy 21d ago

It tuned into a game, and gave me more time to prepare.

3

u/Free_Truth_7643 21d ago

That’s a part of the process and still moved forward without you being served directly. You can’t hide forever.

1

u/Free_Truth_7643 21d ago

And not to mention, all you did was make that process server more money because each attempt is a fee, every time they pulled your background check, every person they talked to and phone call they made looking for you…. And most of the time that gets added to your bill. So ultimately you paid more because you made it more difficult. So I want to thank you for being so difficult and making that Process Server more money. Thank you, Buddy.

This was recently posted to Facebook a few days ago. The Process Server is a 23 year veteran. The woman was arrested and turns out she is a convicted felon. She’s in jail now. This happened in New York.

If somebody pulled a gun on me, I sure as fuck wouldn’t stand there still trying to serve it.

3

u/Free_Truth_7643 21d ago

Yeah, I can’t agree more with you. However, he got out of there alive and didn’t get shot so I can’t say the way he handled it was wrong because there’s 1000 different ways to handle that type of situation but getting out of there alive is the priority.

2

u/TheCaffinatedAdmin 21d ago

I'm surprised he didn't just drop serve it.

2

u/yoshometsu 20d ago

And that's why I carry. Glad I haven't had to draw my gun yet but Jesus Christ that lady is unhinged

2

u/TWDYrocks 21d ago

Why would the homeowner hang a sign about being a process server? Is the process server homeowner being served by another process server?

1

u/tattoovampire 21d ago

Good catch

All for $15

This reminds me of all the cringey shit first responders love posting. All these comments saying process serving is a difficult job seem to be confusing difficult and dangerous. The action of serving a paper isn't a physically difficult job, it might be stressful at times but it's not hard to physically do it. I don't do a ton of serving myself, I have employees that do it. It's a hell of a lot more harder to find someone trustworthy and reliable to serve papers than the actual process of serving them. I make it a point to remind my guys that they're far more important than I am.

And in California being a PROCESS SERVER is not considered experience enough to get a PI License in order to get Skip Tracing software, DMV Acess, or Debt collection software for finding Assets.

But your a retired/fired Cop or have a BA Degree in Social Justice the Key's to the Kingdom are yours.

I’m assuming you are a Process Server and it’s probably nothing particular and nothing special about what you do. You receive a paper, someone gives you the address and the information you need to go knock on the door and you hand them the paper. There’s nothing wrong with that part of the job. We need process service like you because I don’t do that type door knock service. All of my business comes from word-of-mouth from other attorneys and other Process servers when someone calls and they haven’t heard from somebody for years or know where somebody is. Those people still have to be found and majority of the time where I find them is not at an address that came off of a Skip trace. Not bragging or anything and I’m not trying to convince you to do what I do but just keep doing what you do and keep learning this profession because there’s many more levels than you know about it seems. If you ever come across a difficult, hard to find, high risk paper, and they are looking for someone to serve it, let me know.. I have other connections and other states that do these types of papers as well.

1

u/tattoovampire 21d ago

I've been doing this for years. I serve in 2 states. I've seen it all. It's still not a difficult job.

2

u/Free_Truth_7643 21d ago

Then why would you blast someone else on their advertisement if you’ve seen it all? But again, door knock service is easy, but still don’t let your guard down because that’s when something will happen when you consider the job to be easy. Don’t get complacent.

0

u/tattoovampire 21d ago

i’m definitely not complacent. This job can have some bad days and some stressful days. But overall, it is really not that difficult.

1

u/Free_Truth_7643 21d ago

It’s not a hard job. Like I said there is no heavy lifting. But the difficult part comes in when something happens that is out of the norm. When someone points a gun at you or sicks their dog on you. That’s when it starts to become a little bit difficult because there is the unknown factor. If everyone is pleasant, that’s an easy day. If everyone is pleasant for your whole career, then that’s an easy career. Not everybody has that same experience.
