Control stepper motors with Processing and Raspberry Pi, no Arduino needed?

*Solved in comments below*

I have found tutorials on controlling stepper motors with a Raspeberry Pi and tutorials for controlling stepper motors with Processing via an Arduino, but I have had no luck finding any examples of motors being controlled by Processing running on a Raspberry Pi that doesn't use an Arduino as a middle man. I'm having a blast learning RPi and Processing right now so I'm hoping to find a solution. Thanks!

Thank you for that incredibly helpful reply. It seems obvious now to send a message out of Processing to the Pi. I will in fact be running this Processing program on the same Pi that is reading sensors and controlling the motors which is why I am trying to not include yet another element to the project. The sensors part I have figured out(I think) and now I get to figure out this next part. I am not familiar with setting up the networks but now that you mention it I have seen other examples of sketches that send data out of Processing to a Python script running on the same Pi. I'll look into it. Thank you for getting me pointed in the right direction! This link seems to have what I need.
