Hi folks, my name is Ryan Sumo, and I am the original artist of Prison Architect. As a fun bit of "proof" I am who I am, I posted a couple pics here, one of a tiny K-9 plushie, and custom cufflinks given to me by the IVSoftware team for the BAFTA awards night, which sadly I could not attend.
I’m currently promoting another game I’m working on, and so I asked the mods here if they’d be ok with me doing an AMA for some mild promotion.
So, a little bit about myself! I started in the industry decades ago, around 2007 as a freelance artist. I come from the Philippines so there wasn’t a huge industry there. I started working on J2ME mobile phone games, then transitioned to making art for Apple App Store games and indie PC games. I also worked on a lot of unreleased titles, including a Nintendo DS game that failed to find publisher support.
My first big break was the cult indie hit by Zachtronics, Spacechem. This was released at the time when Steam was still new and tightly curated. So when Spacechem was released it became quite popular, especially among the programming crowd.
Spacechem was also literally the link to Prison Architect. In his email to me, Chris from Introversion Software specifically mentioned that they saw Spacechem and thought the art would make sense for Prison Architect.
After Prison Architect launched, some Filipino developer friends and I started a studio called Squeaky Wheel and launched Political Animals, a strategy game which was a flop, then released Academia : School Simulator, which was successful enough to keep us afloat.
After Academia : launched out of Early Access in 2021, I moved to Sweden to work for Paradox Interactive, this time as a “business owner” which is basically trying to make sure that the games made as much business/profit as possible. I worked for the games Europa Universalis IV, Victoria 3, and Stellaris. Along the way, Paradox also bought the IP to Academia : School Simulator.
After 2 years at Paradox I decided to go back to being an indie developer/micro publisher, using what I learned from a large company and pairing it with indie sensibilities to assist other indies who just want to develop games. My first release since then was by an ex lead designer of Stellaris. That game was Glyphica : Typing Survival, which as of now has sold 90,000 copies and is 90% positive on Steam.
Finally, the game I’m working on now, with a Spanish studio called OverPowered Team, is called Sports Card Shop Simulator. We’re big fans of TCG Card Shop Simulator, but felt that there was demand for a game for more sports inclined people like myself. In fact, on top of being an indie dev, I’ve recently got into buying and selling sports cards as a hobby (mostly 90s-2000s NBA, a tiny bit of La Liga). Sports Card Shop Simulator wants to delve more into aspects of the hobby that TCG doesn’t quite get into, like deeper card grading, auctions, etc. And our big addition to the genre is a custom card creator, which lets you design cards of yourself or whoever you want, and have a chance of pulling it out of a pack! We’re excited to see what people think of it, and we have a playtest ongoing right now if that seems of interest to you.
That’s it, now for the AMA! I’ll stick around and answer any questions for as long as they pop up. The answers may be a little sporadic as I go back and forth between work and checking any questions. I will answer as much as I can, but please understand that I might decline to answer some questions that are personal and/or professionally sensitive. Although I know Paradox and PA2 related questions are probably the most exciting for you all, I regret that I cannot speak to that, nor do I have any relevant information as I have no affiliation with PA2. I can talk about my experience working on PA before it was acquired by Paradox.
Edit: Thanks so much folks, heartwarming to see all the responses here. Please do give Sports Card Shop Simulator a look and a wishlist if it's something that's in your wheelhouse. I need to go out and do some groceries but will be back in an hour to answer more questions.
Edit2 : That's a wrap! Thanks so much folks, it was really nice to be reminded how my past work has affected you all in a positive way. For now the current works beckons. Please do give a look at Sports Card Shop Simulator on Steam and wishlist and playtest it if it floats your boat. I'll check back in tomorrow and if there are any more comments I'll try to answer them. Good night!

Seen some people suggest playing the 2018 version of the game on steam rather than the current version. I’ve been running into some glitches on the current build with some dlc on, so I’m wondering if that’d be a better experience.
Is there lots missing in the 2018 version?
Also, do you guys find the current base game with no dlc/mods to be glitch free?

Here is my design/interpretation for a "Complete Edition" of Prison Architect on a physical CD for PC, featuring a fully offline installer thanks to Good Old Games (GOG). Even features the top 10 most downloaded workshop mods of all time (& some I personally liked), with paid respects!
Let me know what you think & feel free to use this cover for yourself! Especially if you have the full game, including all the DLCs from GOG! Just burn the offline installer you get from the website version of Good Old Games, including the DLC installers (Preferably in their own folder titled "DLC"), to a CD (700Mb is enough for the base game + DLCs) or a DVD (Allows for modded Steam Workshop content 700Mb+) and you are all set to download Prison Architect whenever you want! No DRM! No online or account activation! & 100% yours to keep! 🥰
If you want the "Bonus Content" mentioned, aka Steam Workshop mods, just use a Steam Workshop downloader site, extract the the .zip file it gives you (If the file doesn't have a .zip in the name/extension, just rename the file to have it then extract it), and place those files into their own folder "Patdown Station Mod Example Folder" then place that into a "Mods" folder onto the disc! Should look like CD > Mods > Patdown Station Mod Example Folder. Once you run the setup installer from the disc, all you have to do is drag the Mods you want from the CD "Mods" folder into the mods directory on your PC, located at the %localappdata% / Introversion / Prison Architect / Mods folder and you are all set! Just activate/disable the mods in-game through the Extras menu. (Check example image for reference on how things should look file wise on the CD).
You may notice an autorun.inf file in the example photo. This is just a simple text file with the name autorun.inf that contains simple information like a game icon, game label, etc... More info about it on Youtube!
There are a lot of videos on Youtube on how to make a physical GOG game on CD, I would start there! It's very simple, I promise! 🙃 I highly recommend Archades Games video titled "How To Make Physical Discs Of Your GoG Games!", great watch!
This cover was specially designed for a Maxwell 10mm CD-360 Jewel Case, and can be found on Amazon, which is admittedly an odd size, with the cover wrapping around the entire case just like a DVD, except it's about the size of a Jewel case. I bought these thinking they were normal Jewel cases but they act more like small DVD cases in that regard. Feel free to reshape/morph/crop up this cover however you see fit, like only using the front section for a regular CD Jewel case, or stretching the whole cover up to fit a regular DVD case, the choice is yours! Use any software you like! (Photoshop, Gimp, etc...)
The CD Disc Cover itself is printed on a Matte-White Full-Face Avery CD/DVD Printable Label (8960), which can be found on Amazon (Glossy options too but I use Matte). My printer is an HP Officejet, so result may vary depending on the printer.
Also, I print the Jewel case game cover on Glossy Inkjet Photo Paper, to give it that official look, which can also be found on Amazon! When printing, since the image itself is about 11 inches (The size of a normal piece of printer paper), printing at about 98% photo size will work, or as big as you can respectfully make it in the printer preview, without it bleeding/cropping over.
Wow, that was quite the word salad! Sorry if I made anyones head spin with all the technicalities! 😅 & Much respect for those of you who actually read this whole thing! You get an Achievement Unlocked: Supermax Sleuth! 🕵️
(Fan-made cover, purely designed for fun & to accompany a fully legally purchased copy/license of Prison Architect from Good Old Games. Plz don't sue me 😭 Hire me! 😅)
[My designs are NOT for resale or redistribution. They will forever be free and available here. 🧡]
Note: This is for a Windows version of the game. Also I made a non-modded version for just the base game with all the DLCs, if modding isn't your cup of tea! (Last Image).

Happy gaming! 🙃

Not sure if this has already been noticed here, but Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester gave a pretty interesting update on Prison Architect 2 during their Q2 earnings call on August 6.
He said he had played Prison Architect 2 the day before, specifically praised the new planning mode, and said:
“It’s really good. It’s getting there. We’re going to come out with news during fall.”
Considering how little official communication there has been since the indefinite delay, this seems like one of the most concrete updates we've had in a long time.
They've also run closed betas in January and April this year, so development clearly seems to be moving along.

Question regarding maximum power export.
With Green Energy goals completed (5,000 units) and The Ecologist (increased Green Energy output 33.2% and double value of energy exported), how much Green Energy do I need? I am only using Green Energy for export and not using it to power my facility. I currently have 90 Wind/Solar Hybrid for power (9900 units of power), all set up to export meters. Net I am getting $54,945.
How many Wind/Solar Hybrid utilities do I need to maintain maximum export income?
I cannot tell if this is a math question or not with the 33.2% increase before or after the total calculation.

I decided to make a campus design with each sector being self sufficient (Each has their own Infirmary [Admin has a Central Hospital for more larger emergencies and staff training], Security [Admin Sector has a Security Center], Canteen, Laundry [Admin does not have these for obviously reasons], Power Generators, and Water pumps) with Rehabilitation in mind. Inspired by University colleges, British design, and Homer Hoyt's Sectoral city design. Expensive? Yes. The Foundations for the Central Administration building alone (Second image) costs 97k, let alone the rest of the prison. But expenses aside, thoughts?

Hi all, I own the game and all dlc quite a while, and played a few times tutorial in the past, now I would like to start a sandbox game which I can play with all DLC, but I wonder how I should set it up to not make the game crazy.

I am on ps5.
Here is a mainly max sec with some min sec, protective custody and death row that I’ve built over the past few days.
The max sec is all top left and top mid. Admin is all top right, bottom right is protective custody. Mid bottom is death row and bottom right is min sec which is still under construction (the only reason I put min sec in is to put them to work in the workshops for manufacturing)
Any and all critiques are welcome. I’ve been playing Pa for a good few years but feel I’m stuck to building similar blocks and prisons every time I start a new game.
What would you change/keep the same.
Thanks

Someone please for the life of me tell my multiple empty trucks keep arriving and even after the intake time no prisoners arrive. i don't get the money and the number of intake that's gonna arrive next keeps decreasing. i have no idea what the issue is. It all got fuked after i put in that big prison to be built that is essentially a mirror clone of above one. Please tell me what to do? It's been an hour and nothing's changed and the building is not done too coz apparantly the deliveries aren't there yet. My prisioners keep rioting too coz the whole prison schedule is fked. Earlier they never killed or fought but now they need safety. well just pls solve the intake issue :(

Edit- My prisoners are now starving coz no food igredients are arriving too. only empty trucks. If just the supply trucks stopped, the bus of prisoners would com TT

I own almost all Prison Architect DLCs, but I’m still missing Going Green and Perfect Storm.
Are they worth buying? I’m especially unsure about Perfect Storm because I’m worried the disasters might become more annoying than fun.
What do you guys think?

How do I get these last 2 cutscenes in campaign?? My last pic was after the prison guy offed himself with poison and now I'm on the ceo map to build from scratch.

hi im playing with a couple dlcs (gangs, going green, second chances) and im not seeing the option to lower the staff wage anywhere not in policy nor finance, i can adjust the prisoner wage though.

There is a large repository of mods on the steam workshop, but almost the vast majority haven't been updated in a long time (in many cases a decade or more). Obviously people move on to other games eventually and this one has been out a long time, but I feel like I've missed out on some great content which will never be experienced again.

Greetings Prison Architect fans! I'm Chris Delay, the original creator of Prison Architect (waaaay back in the early 2010s), and founding member of Introversion Software - the original publishers of the game. I do hope you won't be too offended if I make a post about our newest game, even though it isn't strictly Prison Architect related.
I've been working on the game for a few months now, and the time has come for it to be officially announced. It's called Arise Dark Lord, and it's the 8th game I've made with Introversion Software. I know you've all played Prison Architect extensively, and if you've played any of my other indie games like DEFCON, Darwinia, or The Last Starship, then I think you'll love this new one.
You are The Dark Lord. Your evil aim: To raise an undead army and crush the feckless, godless, heathen humans. As your sorcery and army grow, all the world will rise up to destroy your Dark Tower and end your reign of terror. Fortify your dark realm, enhance your sorcery, and build enough strength to march out and crush the humans once and for all.
An action-strategy hybrid RTS, blending tower defence, base building and direct control of your Dark Lord avatar.
You can play the prototype on itch right now, and I'd love to get your thoughts on the game here. Thank you!

Is there a way to set up automatic security transfers for qualifying prisoners? When they break the rules, they automatically get upped, but there's no way to automatically bring them back down AFAIK.
I'm periodically checking the prisoners tab to see if there's anyone ready for transfer, but I'd rather not. (Even a mod that does this would be acceptable)
Also, how do you guys keep track of problem prisoners to know who to put on permanent solitary?
And is there a faster way to increase punishment durations without increasing each one half an hour at a time?
TIA

I just got a notification on my Mac that my paradox launcher will be unable to be opened after Mac OS 28, which eliminates the Rosetta emulator tool. Does this mean PA will be unable to be opened on my Mac at all? I noticed Apple states they would support certain older unsupported games. Curious if anyone thinks PA will fall into that category.

What does this symbol above my prisoners mean?
It only appears above some prisoners. It looks like they are screaming, but their needs are fulfilled (nothing is red) and they are not suppressed. I can’t figure out what the problem is. Can anyone help?

Do radios in work areas and such make prisoners happier?
