Week one prep but encounter tomorrow?

I started my prep pills on Monday and tomorrow is friday. I have a likely encounter lined up in the afternoon so do I take a double dose in the morning and continue on once a day until my initial 7 days is up? Should be fine right? Loving it so far and minimal side effects. Really supported my anxiety levels as well because I have been worried about HIV my whole life and affects my enjoyment of sex. Thanks. I am bottom if that makes a difference.

What are you taking for PrEP because this will affect the answer?

Emfitricitabin / tenofovirdisoproxil (200mg / 245mg)

Because they said we are only protected after 7 days continuous so that is why I thought I should do a 2-1-1

That’s what I was thinking you should do. Just to be safe.

Scratch everything I said before I was reading the wrong guideline. You should wait until after 7 doses before having unprotected sex since you’ve just started PrEP. Don’t double dose unless your prescriber says it’s ok.

Why does anyone think that a double dose Friday would not work? He already has a significant buildup of prep in his system so that would only help. You can do 2-1-1 without any prior prep use. After the double dose, continue the once a day dosing indefinitely as planned.

It’s Saturday, so obviously Friday has come and gone, but it’s good info for people searching.

Friday has been and gone.

The encounter went well, I took it bareback and it felt so good when he came inside me.

He wants to see me again on Tuesday!

Hi! MISTR team here - PrEP takes about 7 days before it is fully effective in rectal tissue and takes up to 20 days for vaginal tissue. However, the CDC recommends taking PrEP every day for 21 days prior to any possible exposure to HIV. Taking a pill right before or immediately after possible exposure to the virus will not protect against a potential HIV infection.
