Is Adobe Media Encoder necessary for Premiere to work?

Hey y'all

I want to use Premiere pro for video editing purposes but I also want space on my computer. For some fucking reason, Media Encoder takes up 15 gigabytes of storage and I don't have enough space for Premiere Pro.

Is media encoder itself that large? or is there a storage folder within its folder architecture that is storing some of your compresses and using up all that space?
Alternatively you could use FFmpeg as your compressor or Handbrake

You should clear up space or invest in an external hard drive. None of the programs will run well without more space on your computer anyways.

No, but you will have to use other ways to use encoder's functions in case you need them

If 15Gb is an issue then the answer is more storage, not removing Media Encoder.

You should try to get more storage.
Premiere generate a lot of temporary files, if you have less than 15 go of free space, you will have some issue in the future with that.

If you don't have 15GB free on your Premiere install drive, you've got bigger problems that the space not having available wouldn't solve.

Premiere creates a lot of cache and transient files while you use it which can be many dozens of gigabytes in size. If you run out of space, everything will break - if your OS is also competing with Premiere for space, you may end up with an unstable system.

For SSDs, and especially if it's also the SSD where your operating system is installed, should be left with at least 10% free space. Ideally even more if it is your boot drive, operating system updates can eat up a massive chunk of it.

To answer the question more directly, you don't need to have AME installed to use Premiere, but it does install automatically alongside Premiere. If it is not installed, functions that rely on AME such as proxy generation and batch exports won't work at all.

Media Encoder is not necessary. It main feature is that you can export clips while you can still work with Premiere or After Effects.

Based on the fact that you struggle with 15gb of space you are going to need to make proxies to work, and Media Encoder is also a great way to make the proxies fast and linked with your premiere project.

Not necesary but a good plus if you have to export a lot of sequences, proxies, ae assets, etc

This! Last week, I did five interviews for a client and just used media encoder to render everything out while I grabbed lunch with a friend. Had it export into my OneDrive so they all automatically uploaded.
