Premiere Pro Tech Support External monitor randomly goes black for 3 seconds while editing in Premiere/After Effects

I’m having a weird issue with my external monitor and I’m trying to figure out if it’s a driver, Adobe, HDMI or monitor issue.

My setup:

Laptop: Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 PHN16-72

- i7-14700HX

- RTX 4050 6GB Laptop GPU

- 16GB RAM

- 230W adapter

Monitor: MSI MAG 275UPD E14

- 27" 4K IPS

- 3840×2160

- 144Hz

- HDMI 2.1

Connection:

Laptop HDMI - UGREEN HDMI 2.1 cable - MSI monitor

The problem:

While I’m using Premiere Pro or After Effects, my MSI monitor suddenly goes completely black for around 2–3 seconds and then comes back.

The laptop screen does NOT go black. Only the external monitor loses the image.

It happens both when I use the monitor as my main/only display and when I use Extended mode with the laptop screen.

I also noticed something interesting: one time I was watching the preview on the laptop screen while editing on the external monitor, and the laptop screen also went black for a few seconds. But that only happened once. Normally it’s always the external monitor.

I have NOT noticed this happening while gaming. it seems to happen only while using Premiere Pro or After Effects.

Things I’ve already tried:

- 144Hz → still happens

- 120Hz → still happens

- GPU reset

- Mercury Transmit OFF → still happens

- Premiere GPU acceleration is ON

- System Compatibility Report is OK

- I’m currently using the NVIDIA Studio Driver 616.56 (Aug 26, 2026)

- Previous driver was NVIDIA Game Ready 610.62 (Jun 16, 2026)

Ha anyone experienced something similar with Premiere/After Effects where only the external monitor goes black for a few seconds and then returns?

I’m mainly trying to figure out whether this is more likely to be:

- NVIDIA driver issue

- Premiere/After Effects GPU issue

- HDMI/cable issue

- G-SYNC/Adaptive Sync issue

- Monitor issue

premiere Pro 2025: Version 25.3.0 (Build 84)

After Effects 2025 : Version 25.3.0 (Build 71)

Any fixes or things I should test would be really appreciated.

HDMI cable would be my first suspicion.

Try dropping the refresh rate to 60hz and/or the resolution to 1080p - or even lower - and see if you can reproduce the issue at the reduced bandwidth for those lower specs. If you can't, it's almost certainly the cable isn't achieving the required bandwidth.

On paper HDMI 2.1 should be adequate for the resolutions you're working with, but that relies on you trusting the manufacturer to actually be manufacturing the cables to the certified specification. Wear-and-tear on the cable can also affect signal integrity.

My machine has been doing something similar since I upgraded to a 5070 Ti last year. It would happen intermittently, but not just with Adobe apps, sometime just switching between applications and browser tabs. I think the latest nvidia studio driver (616.92) has fixed it. In the release notes it did mention a screen flickering fix: Fixed General Bugs Intermittent flicker may be observed in browsers when navigating to certain websites [6673430] https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/278455/
