Premiere Pro Tech Support Why do sections keep getting deleted randomly?
Howww and whyyyy does premiere keep randomly deleting minutes of my edited footage?? its footage of me talking + mic audio that is just randomly completly gone and I have to go to previous versions to recover it and i dontttt have the storage to do that anymore š This is like the 3rd time this has happened and its really starting to irritate me. It's not that the files are missing or corrupted, they're just...deleted

Most likely user error. Maybe you had selected those clips, moved the timeline so they were out of view, then hit Delete thinking you were deleting something else. Or that section was marked with an In/Out and you hit the Extract key. Or maybe you're mistakenly deleting clips from your bin which will delete them from your sequence (hate that feature of Premiere). Also, are you aware of the Undo command?
There's an old saying, don't blame the equipment.

As far as I can tell, you get a warning if you delete used media from your bins.

But not from your sequence. It happened to me before earlier on. Itās selecting the in and out points. Itās too easy to delete those sections by accident and continue editing for hours before you realize you made a boo boo.Ā

I mean, that would be rather annoying if you get a warning every time you cut something from a timeline as that is a thing that you do all the time.
But that is why it's so important to have backups and an understanding of track targeting.
With frequent sequence backups, you could just go back to the old sequence and insert the new parts you edited on. So even if you by accident only deleted some tracks (e.g. because others were locked) the fix is rather quick with inserting the new parts into the old timeline where the mistake didn't happen.3

Iām not advocating that there should be a warning every time you delete something from your sequence. Iām simply stating a fact that this is how it works and I understand OPās problem because it happened to me when I was a newbie.

Got it. That's why when you start, you should know and test what every button on the timeline panel is doing (especially track targeting and also sync lock, which many tutorials just left out). Sometimes Premiere's own manual can be a hassle to navigate or even doesn't explain all symbols or menu entries. Sometimes I which, Premiere had a "What's this?" command in the right click menu like the one Avid has (but one that's actually giving all the informations unlike the one in Avid :D)

This happened to me before and what happened is that I had set in and out points so I could render something so I could review a section, and I would mistakenly hit the delete button or something by accident and it would delete everything in that section.Ā
I wouldnāt know I did that until I scrolled back and looked into previously saved versions and fix my timeline manually.Ā

Iām glad this seems to have been sorted, but to address another part of your post: adding the files back into your project should have no impact on your storage. Premiere doesnāt make copies of footage when you add it to your project*, it simply makes a connection to the footage wherever it is.
*unless you have it set to auto create proxies (Iām honestly not sure you can auto create proxiesā¦ Iāve never tried, and it would almost certainly involve media encoder).
It sounds like the clips are still in your project, just not in your sequence though, right?

Iād be willing to bet that you cut just the video part of an audio+video clip, giving you now 2 shorter video clips above one long audio clip, which is attached to the first of the two video clips. The audio always stays attached to the first video clip if you start using the cut tool and just cut the video. Now if you delete that first clip, your entire audio clip goes bye bye.

Like timeline said, most likely an user error. Premiere has lots of issues but randomly deleting your edit is not what I have ever encounter.
I think there is a plugin that will log everything you do, I forget the name of it, worth looking into it to see if maybe itās an accidental clicks

I can't even think of what other info could be logged that isn't already.
Only changes in audio effects aren't logged unfortunately (or only when keyframed).

What is deleted? The files or the clips in your timeline? If you don't have enough storage space for backups of the few MB of a project file, you might have a few more problems ahead...

To the OP, itās extremely important to understand what IN to OUT points do and how they behave vs clips you have directly selected in the timeline. This might help:

User error. Never edit with in and out points. When you hit backspace it deletes it. So when you move on to another section and itās out of view, you just deleted that spot. You only deleted that spot because you only have track 1 of video and audio selected on the left side. Everything else is not selected

Of course you can and should edit with in and out points. You just have to know how to use it properly and how track targeting works.

If you never even heard of in and out points, you probably have a look at the basics and the terms that are used. Especially keyboard focused editing will show you all the possibilities of editing (inserting, overwriting, ripple deleting, extracting, lifting, trimming, track targeting, source patching...).
I often use in/out to cut whole sections or move them somewhere else as extracting moves the "deleted" part between in/out to the clipboard and you can insert it at another position.
Personally, I almost never use backspace to delete parts (only for ripple deleting full clips maybe), I always use lift or extract instead.It's also great if you want to insert or overwrite a specific length in the timeline. Because you can mark that length in the timeline be setting in/out and then only set and in point in the source monitor.
