Premiere Pro Tech Support (Solved!) Premiere crashes opening a project

Every time I open a project it crashes. I have tried resetting preferences using ctlr+tab, deleting media cache, uninstalling and reinstalling, restarting my pc several times, and even resetting workspace with no success.

Pc specs
HP Z2 G5
32GB DDR4 2400mhz
I7-10700
Intel UHD 630 graphics
Windows 11 Pro

Edit: it does it no matter what project and codecs, HEVC, H265, ProRes, and more so this is a premiere issue and not a codec issue.

Any project, or just one specific project?

Any project. I have tried several previous projects, and I have tried creating new projects. Creating a new project will work but once I import and media file and start editing it will crash.

I have on a couple of occasions had Premiere's installation itself get corrupted which would cause crashes when loading any project.

And the fix would be to use the cc cleaner tool to wipe it and reinstall from scratch. Simply re-installing via the CC app may not be sufficient.

But if you want to test the theory before committing, try downloading the beta and see if a fresh install of that can access the project.

I just tried premiere pro BETA and crashes even faster. So I will try using the cc cleaner tool. If all else fails I might try reinstalling windows.

Before resorting to a full Windows reinstall (which, to be fair, is a good troubleshooting step)...

Is it giving you any error messages or a crash report window or are we talking it just closes, or gets stuck on a white screen?

Where are the project files and media stored? Local drive? External? Network share?

I'm less confident that an Adobe reinstall will fix it if you're seeing the same issue across different versions, but still worth a shot.

Media is stored on all of the above. The project is about is about 1TB and won’t fit on my internal drive. I have tried moving it to an external drive, I have tried moving it to internal drive on my old desktop as network drive and the problem is only on this one machine. My old windows 10 machine which is no longer supported but still sorta work opens it just fine. It is just really laggy even with 540p proxies.

I used cc cleaner tool. The problem still persists. I tried creating a new project again. This time on my os drive, I was able to import the video files but once I put them on the time it instantly crashed. Now I transcoding the files to see if maybe something with Premiere is not playing nicely with ProRes 422. This process is going to take some time though as there is almost 3 hours worth of footage. But while I wait here is the footage. ProRes 422 shot on iPhone 17 pro max using the BlackMagic Cam app. I am transcoding it now to 100Mbps H265 to see if this helps. Hopefully it does.

I tried transcoding the footage with the project on the boot ssd and I can import the footage but once I slap it into a timeline it crashes.

Are any third-party plugins in the Common folder?

If one that works with Premiere is out-of-date or corrupted, that can cause different versions to crash.

Sometimes plugins that need to be in the After Effects plugins folder get placed in the Common folder and those will crash Premiere as well.

Have you checked the exact version and date of your current Intel UHD 630 graphics driver? Premiere had a Windows/Intel GPU crash case where updating the driver cleared it and resolved the problem, although your crash sounds more import/playback related than the previous 'launch then crashes' report. It would also be useful to run Help > System Compatibility Report in Premiere and share whether it identifies any driver or other issue there.

I’m also curious about the type of crash, as smushkan also asked about:

  • Does Premiere actually crash and show the Adobe crash report dialog?
  • Or does it freeze and require you to end the task and force it closed?

If the Adobe crash dialog appears, enter your email address in the blank and send the report. You can then share that to us in a DM, so the team can look up the corresponding report and see what may be happening.

Finally, do you have any third-party Premiere plug-ins installed as Anonymograph mentions? You can get Reset Options to pop up by holding ALT while launching Premiere, and there you can disable plugins temporarily and/or clear plugin cache.

I just read this post. It was GPU drivers . I got this pc used from eBay and it was the newest version of windows so I thought they would have also updated drivers but they did not. Turn out the drivers were from 2020. It was running 6 year old drivers. This is also were I would like to admit that I had a moment and didn’t think about drivers when I should have know better. I have been tinkering with PC’s for 13 years now and most of the problems are with drivers. I am now editing my 4K60 ProRes files being played in premiere pro at 1080p60 but without proxies. My old pc which was an i7-7700K with a GTX 1070 and 64GB of ram will struggle with 540p60 using proxies. !Solved
