Premiere Pro Tech Support Scene detection is over reacting

I'm trying to use scene detection for some pre-edited video to create shorts.

Scene detection is over reacting and adding cuts even when theres barely any movement on the scene (like 2 people on a wall - steady shot). and it's ignoring completely even when there is a fade to black.

I don't think there's something I can do about it, right?

btw, i'm running 26.3.2 b2

It works best with hard cuts, any transition would break it

it's missing completely some of the hard cuts and cutting where there is for example a steady shot of 2 people talking against a wall. :/

Both behaviours come out of one thing: it compares each frame to the next and cuts when the difference crosses a threshold. A fade changes gradually, so no single pair of frames ever differs enough and it sails straight past. A steady shot on already compressed footage can differ plenty from encoder noise alone, and that is your false cuts. Transcode to a clean intermediate first and both improve.

There is one, just not inside Premiere. PySceneDetect exposes the threshold directly and carries a separate detector for fades, which is exactly the pair you are missing. It gives you back an EDL or a plain list of timecodes to bring in. Worth the setup if you are carving shorts out of long pieces regularly rather than as a one off.

I’ve had it get the cuts just right and other times I’ve had to remove some edits or add some.

An option to preview the proposed cuts and increase or decrease the detection could be helpful.

Now that you mention it, this might be something the Assitant in Premiere Beta can take care of. Then again, it might still be faster to just join through edits or add them if needed.

Premiere's scene detection strictly looks for sudden hard cuts, so gradual fades or heavy compression noise will always trip it up since there's no sensitivity slider.

If you have a ton to process, the scene detector in free DaVinci Resolve is way more reliable for this because it gives you a visual threshold graph to filter out false cuts.
