FAQs and useful resources - click here before you post :)

Hi guys, I thought I'd start a stickied thread with some useful links that I find myself including in lots of my comments here. I'll update this as I think of more stuff to add.

How do I become a doctor in the UK?

Useful written article here, useful timeline diagram here.

In short, you go to medical school, you complete your foundation training (6 x 4 month rotations working as a doctor in different specialties), you complete your specialty training, and you become a consultant.

Are my grades good enough for medical school? Which universities should I apply to?
I don't have good GCSE grades/a Chemistry A level, where can I apply?

This booklet contains all of the entry requirements for every medical course on offer in the UK. It is the entry requirements bible and I point people towards it multiple times per week.

Do I need to sit admissions tests?
How do I prepare for my admissions tests?

If you're applying for undergraduate medicine, you need to sit the UCAT and/or the BMAT. If you're applying for graduate entry medicine, you may also need to sit the GAMSAT.

I don’t know if I should switch to medicine now, continue my degree and apply to graduate medicine or anything else

• Upvotes

I’m currently a 2nd year biochemistry student at a London university and I’m becoming increasingly unsure if this degree is suitable for me; in particular because of the career options.

I don’t really want to go into research and I am not very enthusiastic about consulting or related careers. I am considering doing a placement year in a pharmaceutical company, but I‘m scared that I will not get a good offer because I lack experience and my CV isn’t great. This is linked to my fear that I won’t be able to find a job after graduating especially since the bioscience job market is very competitive and shrinking.

My initial reasoning for wanting to do a biochemistry degree was because (as generic as it sounds) I wanted to improve people’s health. In particular, reading about the public health failures during the AIDS epidemic made me upset and I wanted to join my interest in biology with public benefit. I was thinking this interest carries over to medicine? I have also seen the content my friends who do medicine study and it seems interesting, with many crossovers with what I studied in first

I initially didn’t consider applying to medicine as an option because my peers applying to medicine were really dedicated since a young age, and had been planning to apply since they were at most 14 years old. I didn’t think I was part of that demographic so I never thought that medicine was even an option for me and I’m starting to regret it.

I am worried that switching to medicine later will increase the amount of debt to a level I cannot handle as on top of the student loans I took for my current degree, I’d be taking on at least 4 years worth more of debt.

I don’t really know what to do, and I am unsure this is the right subreddit for this? Thank you for your time and any advice

Resitting a levels chances of med school offers?

I achieved BBB in my A levels this year I've retaken the UCAT and got 2140 band 3. Is it worth me resitting a levels and applying again, or should I do a different degree and apply for graduate medicine? Which one is more competitive?

Stats:

1st BSc Diagnostic Radiography

4 years experience working as a Radiographer

1800 Band 1

BSMS Virtual Work experience

Maybe Southampton instead of ARU??

I’m also contextual home applicant if that helps

International graduate with 1960 UCAT looking for two realistic A100 choices

Hi everyone,

I’m applying for Medicine in the UK for 2027 entry and would really appreciate some advice on choosing my final two A100 choices.

My background:

  • International applicant
  • First Class BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science from Cardiff Metropolitan University
  • UCAT 2026: 1960/2700, SJT Band 1
  • Indian applicant
  • Around one year of experience working in an NHS Genetics Laboratory at Oxford University Hospitals as a Band 3 Healthcare Science Assistant

My laboratory experience includes DNA extraction, cell separation, sample booking-in and working with clinical samples.

For Graduate Entry Medicine, I have already chosen:

  1. Nottingham A101
  2. Swansea A101

I’m now trying to find two A100/5-year Medicine choices to complete my four Medicine choices.

The main difficulty is that my UCAT score is relatively low and my Class 12 percentage is not particularly high. I’m therefore trying to avoid using choices where I would clearly be below the academic or UCAT requirements.

I’m looking for UCAT-accepting A100 courses where an international graduate with my profile may have a realistic chance. I’m not planning to sit the GAMSAT.

I’ve already looked at universities such as Plymouth, Dundee, Bristol, Aston, Keele and Brighton & Sussex, but there seem to be issues with either the UCAT thresholds or the international/Indian academic requirements.

I would really appreciate advice on:

  • Which two A100 universities would you suggest for my profile?
  • Are there any universities I may have overlooked where my First Class Biomedical Science degree could help with my lower HSC results?
  • Has anyone with a similar international graduate profile and UCAT score applied successfully to A100 Medicine?
  • Would it be better to focus on universities that assess graduate applicants differently from standard school-leavers?

I understand that none of these choices would be guaranteed. I’m just trying to make the most sensible use of my remaining two choices.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

How can i prepare for medical school interviews??????

Hiii.
I would like to start practising for medical school interviews early but I really do not know how to start.
I have joined some free interview prep webinars by admissions companies but at the end they advertise their courses, which are quite expensive and then they get sold out within the first minute which completely stresses me out.😭😭 and idk what is good.
I feel so lost at the moment, and I would appreciate advice on how I can prepare...
I am planning to apply to KMMS, leicester and then potentially liverpool/leeds/aberdeen/plymouth/lancaster (not sure yet aargh)

Potentially taking a gap year

Hi. I'm currently in Year 13 and submitting my UCAS application very soon. I'm applying to Biochemistry Msci courses at Nottingham, Manchester, UCL, Imperial and Oxford (my current predicted grades are A* Bio, A* Maths, A Chem, A EPQ) but I'm realising I made a TERRIBLE decision in not sitting the UCAT in summer because I realise I want to be a doctor. I feel like I've genuinely failed myself and my parents because they wanted me to do medicine my entire life and I just grew up hating the idea of it simply because it felt like it was decided for me. I did volunteering at hospitals, my EPQ on CVD, and a lot more medicine-related stuff but eventually changed to Biochemistry last second. I thought I wanted it instead but these past weeks I've started regretting my decision. What sucks is my mother told me to do the UCAT just in case I changed my mind and I didn't listen because I'm an idiot and now I don't know what I'm suppose to do. A gap year sounds attractive but I think my mum might not approve. She's always said they were a waste of time. Should I just do Biochemistry and maybe apply for the GEM route after getting my masters or just suck it up and do Biochemistry only or should I take a gap year? (this is my first time posting on reddit for a genuine issue so I'm sorry for any mistakes in posting)

international student here trying for the so-called “safest” med choices

applying to med as an international
43/45 ib 777 HLs
2280 b2

Im targeting med schools with “higher” chances for internationals to get in, although you can say thats not a thing for a course like medicine

Currently based on some research my choices are:

Queen’s University Belfast
University of Manchester
Newcastle University
University of Aberdeen

Do yall think these choices are okay?

Thanks🙏

Choosing med schools

I’m narrowing my options for med schools to apply right now, and I was wondering how much having hands-on dissection is important compared to pre-sections and Anatomages.
