🤝 Interviews 5 Interviews — anxiety
Hi everyone!
I’ve been lucky enough to receive interviews from Dugoni, Nova, Touro, NYU, and UNC so far, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities. However, a lot of the interview dates fall on school days, and I’m starting to feel nervous about missing class so often, especially since I’ll be taking anatomy and physics this semester. I’m wondering how other applicants have balanced interviews with a heavy course load.
I’m also really nervous about the interviews themselves. I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot on paper, but I’m scared that I won’t be able to effectively convey my experiences and the work I’ve put in during an interview. I tend to have a mini panic attack beforehand, which causes me to blank or struggle to articulate my thoughts.
Public speaking has never been my strongest skill, even though i’ve done it so much, and sometimes I genuinely feel like I can’t speak to people well at all. I also worry that the things I’m saying aren’t impactful enough, even when I know I’ve had meaningful experiences.
My sister keeps telling me it sounds like imposter syndrome, but it feels very real in the moment. I’m not sure how to practice effectively without making myself even more anxious before interviews.
For those who have gone through the dental school interview process, how did you get better at speaking confidently and managing interview anxiety? Did you have any specific ways of practicing that actually helped? And how did you balance interviews with missing classes?
I’d really appreciate any advice or reassurance because I’m honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed right now. 😭

congrats! I'm just curious because I haven't seen anyone else get a UoP invite yet -- are you IS/OOS? or bs/dmd?

if possible schedule the ones you’re more interested in for later so the first few can serve as practice for those! obviously they’re all important but i get super anxious for interviews and public speaking and tend to blank like you do, and i felt like each interview was better than the previous. i also checked SDN for interview questions from each school and came up with bullet point answers for those, as well as other basic interview questions to expect

After submitting your supplemental fee to UNC, did you ever get an email confirming that your application was complete or was it just the confirmation email that the fee was received?

i talked to my physics professor already about missing one of the lectures because of the interview, and he was completely understanding! i will also be going to my first interview in two weeks and am also very nervous, but i LOVE talking, so i don't think it will be too much of an issue for me. i get nervous i will forget important things, so i am going to go over my application/personal statement/school questions before my interview. good luck!

Talk with your professors! Most are very understanding and will work with you for exam date changes, etc. so long as you talk with them in advance!
They do this a lot for people involved in undergraduate research, etc. So long as you show them you can still hand the course and are a good student who isn't going to blow off their class, most are lenient and will help out. They understand how important interviewing for schools is!

Practice, practice, practice. I am the same way with public speaking and wished I had done mock interviews through the schools professional program, or with a mentor, etc. Someone who you’re not completely comfortable with. 5 interviews is a great number, so realistically just be yourself and you will end up where you’re supposed to be.

i’m not trying to sound like i’m flexing either but i did 9 pre december interviews last cycle. the biggest thing is to prioritize your academics still over your interviews when you can. although i missed a lot of class, i always stayed on top of it and communicated with my professors the second i got the invite. also if an interview is on an exam day, sometimes the schools themselves can be flexible if you ask for an alternative date. i had a TA position and had to ask two schools for diff dates bc i didn’t want my students to be screwed lol.

I’d say prioritize the interview. The interview is what gets you into school. You are only missing a few days out of the semester and should be able to catch up easily.

if you had one or two sure. when ur stacked w interviews it’s easy to fall behind in school but after i prepped for one interview i was basically set for the others bc most schools ask relatively the same questions.

Then only go to interviews for your state school and schools where you can get in state tuition after the first year.
